Men’s Underwear

AustralianI really appreciate this you are one of my favorite models right now in the world of underwear. I think you will continue to grow in your career. Here are the questions:

Thanks for taking time to answer a few questions. You are blowing up on social media and we wanted to let our readers get to know you better. I was looking through some of our photo archives and found a shoot you did with Flash Avenue a few years ago. You have really done some awesome pictures.

You have an amazing look and are gaining a following, what made you want to pursue modeling? What was your first job?
Thanks, that’s very kind of you to say. I first started modelling when I was a college/university student back in Texas. One of my friends had gotten a job to walk in a local menswear show and asked me to come along. It started as just an easy way to make some extra money in between classes.

AlexWightman_1

Looking back on your modeling career, what shoot do you consider your breakthrough in your career?
There have been two moments. The first was when I was living in Hong Kong and got my first print editorial. It was for a magazine called MrMr and was designed around this great snakeskin Vivienne Westwood suit. That really raised my profile over there. The second moment was here in London about three years ago when I first shot with Kadmil – a Serbian photographer who has done some of my favourite images. Two of the images ended up on covers which again raised my profile here and really set me on the path I’m on now.

You have shot for AMU and Flash Avenue Studios a lot recently. Which shoot has been your favorite? Why?
I had the pleasure to work a lot with Flash Avenue this past year. My favourite shoot with them would have to be my very first one. Firstly it was with a group of great guys – it’s always a bit more fun when you’re not alone – and secondly the sets were very cool. The one that sticks out in my mind was a huge white block with a circle cut out of the middle. We all took turns posing inside the circle and it ended up looking almost acrobatic. The background was a hot pink gel, the circle was white and we were in black Marco Marco underwear. It looked really cool.

Speaking of Flash Avenue Studios. This year you have a calendar coming out for 2016. Tell us about the calendar and what we can expect?
Yes, the calendar is actually available for pre-sale right now (www.flashavenuestudio.com/shop). It will be shipped at the beginning of December but all the images have been taken and I’m very happy with it. It’s a compilation of some of the most popular images I have done with Flash Avenue over the last six months.  In addition to several new ones that are exclusive to the Calendar.

Part of the proceeds go to charity. What charity did you choose and why?
Yes part of the proceeds will be donated to BLISS, which is a UK charity associated with premature birth; I chose that charity because I was born twelve weeks prematurely – I was tiny at only 3 pounds 15 ounces. I had to spend over a month in the intensive care.  In fact that white mark you can sometimes see on my chest is a result of a heart monitor that was placed on me while I was in there.

All shoots are different but have you ever had a challenging shoot? If so why was it challenging?
Oh yes I have a few. The ones that have been most challenging were because of the cold and weather. It’s just not fun to pose outside in underwear/swimwear when it is cold. But living in Northern Europe like we do sometimes you have to do it. The one I remember most vividly was a shoot I did in Berlin with Tim Mueller. He had secured the top of one Berlin’s tallest buildings as the shoot site. It was October and while it was a beautiful crystal clear blue sky day, it was only a few degrees – and really windy. There were five of us on that shoot. I can remember all of us sitting huddled under a few blankets waiting to be called out one at a time to shoot the set. The look on the face of the guy who was called as he had to throw off the blankets and face the wind was priceless. I’ve never been so cold in my life but in retrospect it was actually funny – and the photos were amazing.

As we have said, you have worked a lot with Flash Avenue Studios and AMU. Are there any brands or photographers you would like to work with that you have not worked with yet?
Many. There are so many photographers all over the world that I would love to get to work with. Rick Day, Wong Sim, Bruce Webber, Marco Ovando… the list goes on. Most of the time distance is the limiting factor since I’m based here in London. I travel a lot and try and make people aware when I’m going to be somewhere but there never seems to be enough time!

When you are not in front of the camera looking great in AMU underwear, what do you do in your spare time?
I’m religious about the gym and going on my runs. I’ve always liked fitness which is part of the reason I’ve been able to do this job. I can cook too. Other than that it’s spending time with my partner and relaxing. I read a lot and I love a good TV series.

Working out and looking great is important for modeling underwear. Is there any specific kind of diet and exercise do you do to prepare for shoots?
For shoot prep I tend to limit carb intake the day before and cut out water from midnight the day of a shoot. I’m not too fussy about it though as I’ve never had a particularly ‘dry’ looking physique and it hasn’t hurt me thus far. I find that its general consistency with exercise and diet that will get you to where you want to be on shoot day.

Marco_Marco

Before modeling underwear did you like great underwear before shooting it?
I’ve always been a fan of underwear. I can remember growing up in Texas. The first time I tried on a pair of coloured briefs – they were red 2xist and what a revelation!

Being an underwear blog we must ask what makes up your underwear drawer?
20% Boxers, 60% Briefs, 20% jocks, thongs and other miscellaneous.

AMU underwear has shot you in mesh but what is the craziest pair of underwear you have ever worn for a shoot?
That would have to be another AMU pair. It was actually just a pouch that hung in front with a waist band.  There was no connector or anything that went under and around. We had a fun time figuring out how to wear those properly but we got there in the end.

Pong_NoLogo

When your name is mentioned more people know who you are how are you adjusting to the fame in the underwear world? When we Tweet about you people love your pics.
It’s very flattering and I always appreciate the support and messages I get from people. I’m just happy that there’s a group of people who enjoy my work and what I’m doing – I certainly am enjoying myself.

As you progress in your career what are your goals for your career modeling and beyond?
I’d love to have a long career. That’s the ultimate goal for any model since age limits how long it can be. Men have a bit of an easier time of it but that’s only if you can transition into the hot Dad/businessman look. I think it’s inevitable that the underwear jobs will eventually dry up and that’s ok. I’ll keep taking them until they do and after that do my best to look sexy and intriguing with clothes on!

What advice were you giving starting out that you can pass along to aspiring models?
Show up and be on time. If you’re professional it goes a long way. I’m amazed at how doing something that simple can really set you apart – but it does.

Thanks Andrew for taking the time to answer our questions. We look forward to seeing you very soon in new shoots!

We are very pleased to present the F/W 2015/16 Addicted underwear collection. Called Bubbly for its freshness, colorful and jovial character, it is a very innovative collection where we have used new fabrics such as polyamide and a high percentage of spandex.

With these new fabrics, the garments give you an exceptional fit. We have also introduced semi-transparent fabrics like tulle, which makes them very sensual and daring. Addicted becomes, once again, a pioneering brand in terms of innovation, research, development and quality.

In addition, for this campaign we have worked with three Russian models of great recognition in this country: David Lurs, Alexander and Alexander Krupnov Dor. Each one has a very particular profile: athletic David, masculine Alexandro and baby-faced yet toned and athletic Alexander.

Again we had the pleasure of having Dylan Rosser as a photographer, who has perfectly captured the message we wanted to transmit in this collection. The settings have also been a revelation: a playground to transmit the freshness, joy, color and innocence, but at the same time, the boldness and sensuality or “Palo Alto” style of the up-and-coming neighbourhood of “Poble Nou” in Barcelona, as well as other venues on the outskirts of the city.

Review #4 was the Manview Calor brief in blue.  This was a new brand for me so I had no expectations going in.  When I first opened the package, I liked the colors and style immediately so I was excited to give these a shot.  From what I can find online. These are also available in a green/gray combination.

Lots of driving and some projects that were outside made these VERY sweaty and gave them a run for their money.  I liked the soft fabric and fun styling the minute I pulled these briefs on.  But might not choose them for a really hot, active day or for the gym.  Because it seems the material isn’t made for that and doesn’t dry quickly and I’m not a huge fan of a damp crotch all day!

The sizing online says they run small so buy accordingly.  I am a 31-32 and this medium fit just right.  The 6% spandex provides a good amount of stretch and the 94% cotton makes them soft.

The cut is that of a modern brief. With the front and back panels connected to side panels in contrasting  white fabric.  which makes them just a little different and allows the bright, red piping to really show.  The waistband is larger than usual with MANVIEW written in large lettering. Which was fine for me, but might bother those who like less elastic around their waist.  The back of these briefs was full but did ride up just a little throughout the day.  Not enough to be annoying but I found myself adjusting them every so often.

Overall these are a pair I would recommend. I will continue to wear – just not on overly active days when I want a pair to stay in place without any fuss.  The multiple colors were great and make them stand out in my drawer of over 200 pairs, which is a huge bonus.

PROS

  • Colors
  • Sporty style
  • Soft, comfortable fabric

CONS

  • Back needed to be adjusted throughout the day
  • Larger than usual waistband (only a con for some)

Some underwear can be an adjustment to get used to. The first time I tried a thong I was not convinced. So it took a few more times before I realized how fun and great they could be. I believe the same could be true for this unique pair of Body Aware briefs as well. Most traditionally aligned with a bikini cut Body Aware makes its mark with an unexpected twist of a “string” waist band. Instead of the most traditional elastic ½” band that we’re all fairly used to.

However, it is those strings that will take me a few tries to get comfortable with. Their support is fine, they hold up and hold in but it is the look it that plays with my mind. Perhaps if I have a better “V” then it would be different because I could see it being very sexy on someone. The little ‘windows’ created by the combo of the strings and the bikini cut will just take some getting used to.

All that being said, the pair is moderately comfortable. The nylon feels great on the bum as it gives a very smooth, very silky feel that is always welcome on the rear. The pouch is similar, very smooth. It is a much defined pouch, as one would expect, and given the windows the bulge definitely stands out.

So, if you want a fun and unique pair that might take a time or two to get used too then this is the pair for you. It is fun, it really is. The colors are vibrant and flashy. The cut is one of a kind. The fit is good.

Pros: Fun colors, very comfortable fabric, flashy and fun.

Cons: Slightly odd string band, slits that could take time to get used to

Beau Briefs recommendation: These are an interesting pair that one will either really love or be on the fence about.

Review (1)

For my third review, I wore the Clever Custok Latin Brief in blue.  I own a thong by Clever that I love so I was optimistic going into this review from the start.  The pair comes in three colors (Blue, Gray & Green) and retails for $28.48 on the Clever website.

The mesh-like fabric felt sporty and sexy so I wore these on a long day that would really test them.  When I put them on that morning the first thing I noticed was the great color(s).  While mainly blue, there is a gray pouch. The red waistband with yellow/gold lettering and fun, contrast stitching.   After a long work day at the office, I ran some errands around town and even went for a jog.  These briefs really got a workout and held up great!  I forgot I was wearing them for the most part, which for me is a sign you’re wearing a great pair of underwear.

When it comes to sizing, these do run a bit small as their own sizing chart indicates.  So there shouldn’t be any surprises.  The medium fits a 30-32 waist and being a 31-32, they worked for me but certainly didn’t leave much extra room.  If you’re on the larger end of your size spectrum, you might go up one size.

The fabric is 73% nylon and 27% spandex.  Which gives this pair great stretch. With a cut that definitely shows you off the perfect amount and offers great support.  The seam going up the back defines your butt which is a blessing for those of us that can use all the help we can get!  The bright colors were in an unusual combination that made me love them even more.  Definitely not your typical briefs.

PROS

  • Colors
  • Great fabric
  • Sexy but practical cut/style

CONS

  • Fit may be a bit small for guys who are super well endowed in the front or back
  • Not inexpensive (but typical for designer underwear)

RATINGS

  • Daily Fit – 10
  • Sizing – 8
  • Construction – 10

My second pair of Manview underwear for review was the Craven Jockstrap in red.  After a positive experience with a pair of briefs last week by Manview, I was anxious to give these a shot.  My first impression was that the fabric felt fantastic. andI liked the modern “fashion” styling rather than a classic jockstrap.  Jocks are not my favorite generally. So I was pleasantly surprised when these ended up being my favorite pair for review yet!

I decided to wear these on a run rather than as underwear since that’s how I typically use a jock.  I think these could easily be worn as daily underwear or for lounging around the house if that’s your style.  It seems that many jocks now are made for fun/play rather than to hold up and be supportive during exercise. So I was really gonna test these!

As a 31-32 waist, these mediums fit just right so I would say they are true to size.  Their chart says 30-32.  The pouch is 85% nylon and 15% spandex so there was plenty of stretch. It hugged everything nicely – both visually and for support.

When pulled these on, the thing I liked most was the fabric – being really soft and supportive.  The bright red color was great. Along with the contrast stitching and elastic around the pouch.  The back straps staying in place during a 4 mile walk/run with very little adjustment needed.  They actually held up as a jock!  I am not a huge fan of classic straps with the really wide waistband and basic elastic straps that scratch a bit.  These were a great modern take that also did their job and I have to say, made me look pretty good through my shorts.   🙂

One change I would make (and it is small) is that the front panel. It is a bit wide at the top and the navy blue elastic rolled under almost immediately.  It didn’t change the comfort level, but it is a nice design feature that got lost.

PROS

  • great fabric
  • fun color combinations made them unique
  • excellent support

CONS

  • elastic around pouch rolled under

A perfectly charming, bulge-tastic pair of briefs: aka exactly what one should expect from N2N. These 90% cotton, 10% spandex Fresh briefs hug in all of the right places.  The briefs make the front/package go, “BAM”. They really do support and exhibit the bulge in the best possible of ways. But not too x-rated but not too subtle either. In other words, I was happy with it.

The piping along the bum also supports everything in an “uplifting” way. They keep it all at height, tight, and well, right. The piping all around is very supportive and only slightly tight in the inner thigh area. That can happen for those of us who are the upper end of Small. The waist band is thin (in a good, sleek way), attractive, and fitting.

The one thing that is just the tiniest bit off is the color. Now, disclaimer, this could just be this particular pair so take this next sentence with a grain of salt. The color seems like it is a sun-faded black. It isn’t a bold, dark black but a kind of washed out shade. And again, this could just be this one pair.

Overall this is a great pair of briefs to add to your routine. They are comfortable to wear all day. They are attractive in a classic, hip brief cut. They are complimentary in their support 😉 They are a great pair of briefs.

Pros: Comfortable, great bulge support, smooth look and feel.

Cons: If you’re a 31 (like myself) the inner thigh might be a tiny bit tight, my pairs color seemed a bit faded.

Beau Briefs recommendation: A great example of what N2N does and how briefs ought to be.

omtex-neo-supporters

Omtex is back at Jockstrap Central with a new range of sports jocks called Neo. It’s hard to believe it was possible but Omtex has managed to improve on what is one of our Jockstrap Central’s customers most loved gym supporters. Like the first edition Omtex jockstraps, they still have the awesome brushed cotton pouch that our customers love, but with Neo, they’ve wrapped the waistband and leg straps with the same brushed cotton fabric so you still get the fit and support you need but with an extra dose of comfort.

Like their predecessors, Omtex Neo Supporters all have a sturdy 3 inch wide comfortable ribbed elastic waistband wrapped in brushed cotton and one inch wide elastic leg straps (also wrapped in cotton) with a double walled cotton pouch to help soak up all the extra moisture and sweat from those heavy workout sessions.

A front centered contrasting Omtex logo on the waistband with a contrasting vertical double stitch down the pouch and traditional detail label in the back adds a stylish touch without losing it’s masculine edge. As with the other Omtex jocks, Neo is also ridiculously affordable so you can buy multiples and have one to wear while the others are in the wash.

Neo is available in black, navy-blue and our personal favorite, a stunning warm grey – and for those who live by the addage “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” don’t worry, all the classic Omtex jockstraps are still available and aren’t going away.

A Brief discussion with Craig Hendry, one of the major players at Bum-Chums Underwear in England, UK.

Bum-Chums is a relatively new Men’s Underwear Brand, probably best known for their unique designs of underwear, choice of fabrics and possibly most of all for their “Tongue in Cheek” sense of humour that the British seem to think they’ve patented!

This simply isn’t the case, and Bum-Chums cheeky, sometimes camp and borderline outrageous humour does indeed translate the world over as the brand continues to strive towards their “mission to rid the world of dull, dreary, sad and saggy men’s underwear” so their site says.

We caught up with Craig ahead of the brand’s Release date for their new Autumn-Winter ’15 Collection and asked him some questions about him and Bum-Chums.

Q: Craig, we know you’re a busy guy and you told us you’re working on the pre-launch of the Bum-Chums new collection. What’s the news for the new AW15 range?

A: Gosh… That really would be telling! Naturally, we like to keep things under close wraps until the big-reveal… Naturally I can tell you that the theme is quite neutral for our brand and it will have some sort of narrative with it, as people have come to expect. The AW15 range and the following releases planned for November are all about “Every Day Wear” pants. We know quite a lot of our underwear is more for occasions, so these are more designed to be your trendy office pair and such.

Q: Does that mean an end to bright and bold styles from the brand?

A: Ha… No… Far from it… Honestly, all of the Chums here absolutely love bright and bold; styles and colours, the works, we just adore brightness in our lives! I mean, we live in Yorkshire, England and there’s a saying “It’s grim up North”, so we need all the help we can get!

Q: Craig, it’s said that you have a hands-on role within the company? What can you tell us about that?

A: I have to chuckle, as I think about this one. There’s a British Comedy called Little Britain with a character who wants to “write the theme-tune, sing the theme-tune” (and so on) Well, that’s a little of what I do. I started the business on my own a while back and on the way found Chums to join in the fight against saggy-naff pants! I’m lucky I found them really.

I guess I do have a keen hand in things. For one I’m the only designer here at Bum-Chums, I deal with everything from sketches, to making and grading patterns. I also buy in the fabrics and make the production samples myself and then I have a hand in making every single pair we sell! In between working with Anthony here on the website and online presence and the videography and photography.

Q: That’s quite a lot of involvement! You don’t model as well?

A: That’s a real interesting one actually. Although I’m really no model; I’m not a pretty boy! I have had a hand in the videos and I’ve been dragged in to a few shots in my pants a couple of times. In fact, I was the “stunt bum-double” in the shower scene of the “Sneak Peek Movie”. There’s a link here to our videos: http://bum-chums.com/pages/bum-chums-video

Q: Bum-Chums seem to have quite a range of models, other than you standing in yourself. How important are the models you use to your brand?

A: Our models are so important to us. In fact most of the guys are friends or contacts of the brand, we love people getting involved and as a small, growing brand, we’re so grateful for all the help we can get. We think that using real, every day guys like you and me is vital… I mean, everyone wants to know what our pants look like on a body like our own. Of course we have a brand style! It’s whacky sometimes, but it’s still there!

Q: How did you get into making underwear Craig? It’s not something you’ve done forever is it?

A: No it’s not… I used to be in the Security Sector, I worked as a consultant and at university I studied Law, Criminology and Security Management to Masters level! Quite an accomplishment I guess, but I’m really proud of what we do here at Bum-Chums and I gave up that career so we could get this bird off the ground and make British Manufacturing work again. We physically manufacture things in a country where our textile industry was decimated and transported overseas. All of our parts come from people I’ve met and shared a coffee and cookie with, no more than two hours away from our factory. It means a lot to us.

Q: What’s up for the future Craig?

A: Well that’s quite an open book really. I mean sometimes here we like to bring out something new just because we can and not so it fits into any real season or collection.

On the other hand, I can tell you that we’ve got our eyes on something really special for next year and we’re already working on that. It’s everything you’d expect from Bum-Chums and bang-on-brand!

Not exactly what we expected here, but certainly an interesting glimpse into the life of an underwear designer and manufacturer we cover greatly here in our blog.

For more on Bum-Chums, check out their site here at www.bum-chums.com and see what you think of their styles and we look forward to covering the launch of their new range… The only thing the Chums would tell us is “The Hidden Shall Be Revealed this October 16th and the Dark Shall be Light”!

Pikante (1)

Pikante is a brand that always has some interesting styles and prints. This collection is no different. It consists of some very sexy cuts, great prints and bright colors. I you are brand new to Picante a few things you need to know. Some of the styles can be very provocative! They aren’t afraid to use mesh that shows it all off! Lastly, its about fun with the brand. You can wear it to a date night or under a suit.

We are going to profile a few of the pairs that we really like!

Pikante PIK 8398 Nozomi Boxer – Black or Green

This pair is great for a trunk fan! The print is something different and not one you would really see in the world of underwear. Its available in black and green. The small waistband elastic forms a supportive pouch and it contains a full back. They used this print in a few different styles! The boxer is $24.48 at Candyman Fashion

PIK 8665 Argot Briefs – Black or Green

Picante always has mesh in the collection. Its the kind of mesh that leaves very little to the imagination. The new Argot Briefs at first glance isn’t totally see through but it’s not going to hide much either. This can be a good thing depending on where you wear it. The pair has a bikini cut with white trim in both colors. The front does have a pouch that will show off what you have under jeans or pants. My personal favorite is the green. It’s because it’s a different color than we are used to in underwear. The Argot Briefs retails for $20.48 at Candyman Fashions

Pikante PIK 9244 Teyotl Jockstrap Thong – Black or Blue

Pikante is no stranger to the hybrid pair. In the last few years more and more brands are making them. Picante is releasing the Jock Thong in these prints. You maybe asking what is a jock thong? Its what you see above. From the front it looks just like a jock but from the back it has leg straps of a jock and the center strap from a thong. This is the other print they are using this season. Its very low key. The black has the black waistband and the blue has the white. The Peyotl Jockstrap Thong is $25.48 at Candyman Fashion.

These are just three styles in the new Picante. See the entire new collection at the GDD World Picante 2015-2 Page. You can shop at Candyman Fashion! See our post earlier for sale information!

NOTE: UNB Tim does consulting work for GDD World/Candyman Fashions but the opinions in this post are his own.
