Hey guys! This week on the Brief Talk Podcast, I’m heading Down Under—at least through the microphone—to chat with Budgy Cub. If you’ve seen his photos, you know the colorful swim briefs, the big smile, and the fact that this boy looks like he’s having a damn good time. Naturally, I had to get him on the show.
We talk about a swimwear collection that’s somewhere around 150 pairs, how he found the confidence to wear budgies in public, and a partner who happily joins in—and sometimes has the nerve to wear his spare pair better than he does. Rude. Very rude.
Of course, we get into underwear, too: micro briefs, thongs, bold Japanese designs, and why finding a comfortable pair can take a little experimenting. We also talk about something I could get on my soapbox about all day: body diversity. If we want brands to show more kinds of guys, we need to support those guys and the brands that include them.
You don’t need abs to enjoy amazing underwear or swimwear. You need something you love, a little room to build your confidence, and permission to have fun. And yes, I fully support adding another pair to the collection.
Episode Highlights
Meet Budgy Cub: The Australian digital creative behind the colorful swimwear photos, and how a move from Sydney to Brisbane helped inspire his online name.
About 150 pairs—and counting: Favorite swim briefs, Pride colors, and why “budgie smugglers” means more than one particular brand in Australia.
Taking that first step: How a beach trip with his partner and best friend helped him get comfortable wearing swim briefs in public.
A partner who gets it: Gifting swimwear, sharing spare pairs, and a little friendly competition at the beach.
The great drawer divide: His color-sorted collection and file-folding technique meet my much less organized approach. Everything brings me joy. I’m keeping it.
Micro briefs, thongs, and finding the right fit: Early experiments with aussieBum, discovering more comfortable styles, and why one disappointing pair doesn’t mean a whole style is wrong for you.
Bring on the color: Japanese underwear designs, bold patterns, and the frustration of loving a design that doesn’t come in your size.
Representation needs follow-through: Why likes, comments, follows, and purchases matter when we ask brands to embrace more body types.
The people who inspire us: How Stevie, Undies Cub, helped Budgy Cub see himself in thongs—and why seeing different bodies wearing great gear matters.
Confidence at your own pace: Open shirts, shorts over swim briefs, a friend’s pool, and finding a setting where you feel comfortable
enough to start.
