Men’s Underwear

Category

We really need to build a sense of community in the world of men’s underwear. It doesn’t matter if you’re gay, straight, bi, non-bianry, or anything else you call yourself. I was thinking about what can I do to foster a greater sense of community. Then it hit me, an underwear list on Twitter to show guys who love undies!

Why did I start this? Well, that’s a great question. I was going through my feed and wanted to see undies guys. What I saw was a lot of porn (hey no judgments on porn, every guy looks at it), but I wanted to interact with undies lovers. Having to scroll through everything was frustrating. Then I came up with the list idea. We have some guys on it now and want to add a lot more.

Why did I choose Twitter? Twitter is the only social media site that you can really create lists and share them with others.

What rules do you have for the list? Here are the qualifications:

  1. You have to love underwear
  2. You post about underwear, specifically pics of yourself in undies (but not mandatory)
  3. You don’t repost a lot of porn (again, this is undies not porn)
  4. Sexual orientaztion doesn’t matter
  5. You want to find more undies guys and have great conversations

Note, that this won’t filter out all dick pics. Guys may show theirs off in undies and out of undies. I won’t penalize guys showing themselves off. It won’t be porn but it will be self pics of guys.

How do I join the list? You go to my Twitter profile twitter.com/unbtim. Send me a reply or DM to be considered to be added.

I hope you listen to the solo podcast I will be releasing (or released depending on when I post this) about the show I attended in early August. It was a very interesting experience because I thought the show would be awesome when I booked the trip in early May. After all, we’d be in the middle of hot girl summer, vaccinations rolled out, and normalcy should be coming back to us. Enter Delta that wiped that all out… There were only a few bands I needed to see in Vegas and one in a suite.

Enough of the background that you’ve heard before, but why are the shows really not attracting men’s underwear brands.

Internet/Video

Even before the pandemic, brands were moving to more video and internet presentations. You can reach way more people and customers than just those who go to a trade show. Not all buyers have the money or time to trek to Vegas for the shows.

Pandemic

The pandemic fucked everything up. Everyone was affected by this, and just when you think rounded the corner, something else pops up its ugly head, like Delta. Some of the brands and the buyers are not comfortable traveling. International brands may not be allowed in the US or have even received a vaccination. Why take unnecessary chances.

Cost for Brands

If you are a buyer, you just have the cost of airfare, hotel, and food. There is no cost if you are approved to attend the show. If you are a brand, there is the cost of the booth. The last time I checked, it was 7000-10000 for a 10×10 booth. That doesn’t’ include the new gear to show off and booth design. To break even, you would need to sell that and hopefully more and gain some new customers. This show in Aug 2021, I doubt you would get many new customers to cause unless you needed to go; I don’t see many people coming just cause they have nothing to do.

Treatment of brands by the show

I forget the year; I think it was 2016 when the underwear brands were put in the back corner in an area that wasn’t even on the show map. This was insane, and many of the brands said their customers just got fed up trying to find them and gave up and never met to buy new collections. Also, they have limited models and what they can wear. This led many brands to go to suites to show off their new lines without limitations. This brought a new problem, and it goes against the rules of the show and the hotel. You can get kicked out, and you are out of luck.

Finding a new community

The one thing I loved about going to the shows in the heyday was the community. The entire world of men’s underwear is a super happy place. It was great to get face time with brands and really develop relationships that aren’t just online or behind email. This is one reason I created the podcast and relaunched it. I want you guys to see the industry and hear from the brands. I have never regretted creating UNB or the UNB store. It makes me happy to do these things! Granted, opening a store, there is a lot more to learn than just doing a blog. However, it’s skills that I’m willing to learn to do what I love.

I’m curious, how do you guys see that we can expand the community for underwear online? We all know Facebook and IG aren’t the places to build a community cause so many people and brands get kicked off the platforms every day. This is a question I have been pondering for years with no clear solution. We need something for guys to connect across all walks of like, every sexual orientation, everybody type that’s not rooted in “let’s fuck now.” (hey, we are all adults if ya want to fuck go for it, but I have found so many underwear guys are just genuine guys).   I credit UNB for some of the amazing friendships I have now. Leave a comment, email,  or DM me on any social media.

In collaboration with Men and Underwear – The Shop

Summer started late in Europe this year! After several lockdowns due to you-know-what, Europe decided to open its borders for travelling early July. Weather permitting, the summer holiday season of 2021 could last until late September and it looks like the swimwear buying season goes with it. Are you interested to know what swimwear Europeans will be wearing this season? Let’s find out!

CODE 22 – Lace Up Swim Brief – Charcoal

The best selling style this season was this beautiful bikini style swim briefs by Spanish brand CODE 22. In a metallic charcoal grey this swimwear has functional buckles on either side as a quirky detail and removable padding at the front for a fuller and rounder package. We have restocked this swimwear in both colours (this charcoal grey and a navy blue) and all times it almost completely sold out in a couple of days!

Marcuse – Master Swim Briefs – Camouflage Pink

One more swimwear that is literally flying off our selves is the Master Swim Briefs of Australian brand Marcuse. Available in camo and a camo with pink, this is a super low rise bikini with embroidered ribbons on either side. On the back there is an innovative thin stripe of mesh material for better definition and better fit.

CODE 22 – Basic Swim Short – Navy

OK, it is not all sexy in this list, some men decided to go for a pair of swim shorts this summer and among them, the Basic Shorts in Navy by CODE 22 was the one that was more popular. Classic but far from being basic, despite its name, these shorts have the trademark Curl-Up technology which allows for the sides to button up and transform the style into swim briefs.

Joe Snyder – Classic Bikini Vibes

Back to briefs and to a pair of underwear that can be (and will be) worn as (sexy) swimwear. The Classic Bikini of Joe Snyder is made from this lightweight poly fabric that allows it to be worn both ways. Joe Snyder has been using such fabrics for decades and they have become experts in it. This print (vibes) has a been a best seller with all other (brighter) options following. We also need to mention that some of the Classic Thongs of Joe Snyder, made from this fabric, also sold as swimwear this year, showing a growing trend for thongs and swim thongs in Europe.

Marcuse – Puppy Swim Briefs – Blue

Last but not least, a re-release of Australian brand Marcuse, the Puppy Swim Briefs. This is the cutest of them all swim briefs with a blue (or grey) body and a sketch of a white puppy printed on the side. This a functional and fun swimwear, no wonder it is again among the best sellers this season

Tim is on location in Vegas going over his adventure at Project/Magic. Hear all about the show and lack of show! Some of his crazy adventures cause he lives in interesting times. And a brief on the future of the shows. It’s a solo show around 20 minutes. Recorded on Monday, Aug 9th, and Friday, Aug 13.

One of the newer questions is, what do you guys wear when working out? I was curious to see if you guys were wearing more spandex or it is still traditional. First up, we asked what you wear when you run. Most wear gym shorts or running shorts. However, a good number wear spandex runners or shorts. As a side note, I don’t know why I put singlets in this section other than I love them. Other than lifting, I don’t know when most guys would wear them.

Ok, you guys shocked me on this one. I knew for a fact that spandex runners would be up there for lifting. I wore them when I did lift (a long time ago) for extra support. But you guys wear the gym shorts by a super-wide margin. WOW, guys! That’s all I can say.

You boys love your gym shorts—again, another blowout when doing cardio. I personally think we need to make spandex more popular than it currently is with you guys. Maybe we need to do a spandex giveaway.

This wasn’t even close to anything other than gym shorts for Crossfit.

Yoga had more spandex than many of the other pairs. But again, almost 50% I gym shorts. Guys, I have my work cut out for me. Before the next survey, we need to spread the word on why you should wear runners or spandex shorts. I never guessed that you guys would be such hard-core gym shorts, guys.

We wrap up the week with another N2N Bodywear picture. Yeah, I’m a little biased, but I love them and their gear! It’s always amazing. I hope you enjoyed this series with extra commentary. In years past, I have run pics of previous years. But never went into depth on the shows. This year I have recorded a podcast while at the show and back in my room. My reflections of the event and the past, present, and future of the shows and undies/swimwear.

I won’t spoil the podcast for you guys; you’ll have to listen. And I’m doing this ahead of editing the show, but there were only a handful of brands and only 2 I needed to see. There were very few smaller brands, and with Covid, many brands outside the US may still be on lockdown or not be vaccinated yet. This definitely limits travel cause I know I would not be going to Vegas if I wasn’t vaccinated. I really wanted to see Cocksox, Gregg Homme, and more, but they aren’t at the show.

You may ask, will I still go to shows? Yeah, I will at least till February. Vegas is a city I LOVE. This trip will be exciting. On the last trip in Feb 2020, a month before COVID, I was in the hospital for a hypertensive crisis and had the worst trip ever. This trip will be masked, hand sanitizer, and trying to avoid a breakthrough case of COVID. On the upside, I will meet a few of my friends and some new friends from the podcast. So that will be amazing.

I have always wanted to do something for you guys to show off more new undies. I am always toying with ideas, and the main thing comes down to cost. Much of what I want to do will cost big money, and I don’t have big money. I have a few ideas for the future with my video skills.

Ok, now to the good stuff, what styles do you guys wear in each situation? This is one of my favorite questions of the survey. I think I’ve worn briefs to everything on this list. But to start, we asked about a public pool; most of you wear swim shorts, some do rock a swim brief, but very few wear a thong. I was hoping that the briefs were more than what you guys answered.

I’m not the biggest fan of lakes. Long story, and I won’t bore you with it, but the beach is way better at the lake if you’re in Chicago. Again you guys wear swim shorts, and the one surprising thing is swim briefs and board shorts are tied! Here in Atlanta, we have Lake Lanier and the gay cove where the boys go in speedos and thongs and hang out on boats. But it looks like most of you go conservative to lakes.

Now, I thought that the brief would overtake the shots for the beach but nope, you guys wear swim shorts to the beach, but the Swim briefs are growing. More beaches are very swim brief friendly. More guys need to rock them at the beach.

We finally have swim briefs on top. If you go to a private resort, such as a gay resort, one in Mexico, etc., you will break out the swim briefs and have fun. This is by a large margin too. I am super happy to see this result. Also, It’s one of the first places guys wear swim briefs; we have heard from several people that they felt comfy and rocked them there and kept wearing them after.

Private pools are pretty much anything that goes: the brief and the thong rule. Depending on the pool, if you are like some of my friends, you start in swimwear and then lose them throughout the day. But, I think more guys are comfortable wearing smaller styles around their friends than in public.

Lastly is private tanning. That means by yourself or in a tanning booth. More guys wear a brief or thong. You guys want the excellent tan lines. I personally love a swim brief tan line, but I can see more of you want that thong tan line.

We now bring you to 2015, which seems like a world away from the current day. One brand that I loved to meet up with is Good Boy Gone Bad; he always was in suites at the show. He had a model that probably a few of you recognize; his name is Marko LeBeau. Yes, he was an adult actor, and I think he may produce and direct now. He is on the left in the picture, so cute to me. He was so nice and sweet every time we meet up at the GBGB Suite. I first saw him at Curve in 2011 and then several times in the Suites.

I would say that 2015 was probably the start of the end of the shows. Fewer brands started to come to the shows and Curve merged with Magic/Project. Post Covid world I’m not sure how many brands will show up. One reason I say this is because on Heidi Klume/Tim Gun show “Making the Cut” they said brands were moving from runway shows to video productions. I think we are going to see that in the men’s underwear world. You have companies like 2EROS, JOR, AussieBum and others doing amazing videos for their lines. I think you will see some stuff from us soon too! SHHH. But there were still more years to come for the shows. I made a brief pause in 2016/2017 due to monetary issues.

We asked first what styles do you normally wear each summer. If you are like me, you wear different swimwear for different situations. For example, if you have a family get-together, most of us won’t wear the hottest swim brief or thong. The three main pairs you guys wear are swim briefs, Trunks, and swim shorts.

Thongs have gone incredibly popular. More guys are wearing them all over. You used to see them on the beach in Miami, but now it’s springing up everywhere. Guys want to wear thongs to the beach! So we asked who has worn thongs, who wants to wear them, and who doesn’t. A good 30% of you have already worn a swim thong, congrats guys. Another 30% want to wear a swim thong, and 35% have no interest in wearing a thong. Again, there was no right or wrong answer to this question, do what you feel is best for you.

So what are you guys buying this year? By far, you guys are planning to rock the swim briefs. Almost 60% of you will be buying them. One question I need to ask next year is what are your favorite swim brands! Don’t worry; I won’t be adding a ton of new questions.

I know not everyone has an addiction like I do and get 8-10 pairs of swimwear a year. But most of you guys plan on buying 1-3 pairs of swimwear. That’s a respectable number. But shout out to those buying 11+ swimwear. It’s like you’re my brothers in gear.

We bring you to one of the best meetings I would have while at the shows. This also brings us to 2013. I planned to do these big posts each year, but I decided to do just one pic and some stories. I think I will do a big post talking about the shows over the years because it’s bringing up so many stories in my head.

Before going any further, I realized that I have NO pics of Magic/Project in this group. These last ones are in suites. Little known about the shows, there were always brands that would have suites near the facilities. I won’t say what hotels, but there were many times I’d have to go up to a suite and walk back to the Mandalay Bay convention center. This year they have moved to the Las Vegas Convention center. So there won’t be many in suites.

One of my favorite brands to meet with was N2N Bodywear; Andrew I LOVE; he’s one of the most amazing people in the industry. I had so much fun with them seeing the new gear, and we would eventually either go out to each other or drink. SO much fun! The first time I met Andrew, I think, was this year. It’s hard to remember when we started the UNB Meet & Greets. But we had Andrew show up, and we stayed at the bar till almost 2 in the morning and then went to the 24 hour McDonald’s in the Luxor (which is now Johnny Rockets) and ate. Ever since then, he’s been my fav.

When you guys are shopping, what factor makes you buy when on a site or in a store. The first was The % off of a sale. There are many types of sales, from 10% to 50%, and the amount of the sale really influences you guys. I would say prob the bigger the discount, the more you will buy.

When you guys are shopping online, Free Shipping is a major influencer to buying. Going into the UNB Store, I knew I had to have free shipping at a good level for you guys and me. Many sites offer flat shipping, but more have like the UNB Store where you buy, and at a certain level, the shipping is free.

I thought this would have more of an influence if a store had more brands. While it’s somewhat important, it’s not a major factor in guying. I personally like a store with a good selection and not just—a few lines. But, sometimes, you guys know exactly what you want and get it.

You guys love new undies! You want the new next thing! If you read the blog, we are the only guys who can pick out this year’s lines. It’s a gift, but we are moving to a cycle where we no longer get new pairs in Feb/March and Aug/Sept, and it’s being spread out over the year. Just look at the business model for N2N Bodywear.

Most of you don’t shop on clearance. I know we have a core group who do, and you can find some amazing deals out there if you look. I say clearance is good for trying new brands. Especially if it’s an expensive brand, try it on closeout and see if you like it, if you do spend the extra money.

Today we bring you to 2012! It’s funny all the pics I chose for this week have all been from Curve. In 2012 Curve wasn’t in the Venetian but moved to the Sands Expo Center and had much better lighting, as you can see it had fluorescent lighting, prob one of the few times it’s been called good lighting.

If you look at the chair on the right, that bag was a classic Curve bag with the neon straps. I have so many of those bags they were perfect for the all the catalogs you got. I would mail them home because I used to do just two carry ons and never had enough room to send them back. It wasn’t till last year I took them out of the bags and put them in magazine holders. They are still arranged by year but I think I’m going to organize them by brand.

This picture features another brand still in business. Rounderbum, they are still going strong in LA and I get their ads on IG and Facebook all the time.

Ok where do you guys buy your undies. Going into this I would place my bets that online stores were king along with brand sites. I know Underwear stores are not prevalent outside of major cities. But I always love to hear where you guys like to shop. You guys do shop brand site pretty often.

See, you guys like Online stores as well. This one is very question that very few are going to answer always.

Specialty stores I consider underwear stores. Like I said, its not something most guys have access too. I wish this would change so the lower numbers don’t surprise me. I mean if all guys had a Skivies in Dallas, we’d all be in heaven.

Back in the 90’s and such Department stores had some great brands. However, flash forward to the 2020’s and outside of CK, the underwear at most department stores are kinda basic in my opinion. They cater to the masses and we aren’t the masses. They don’t have a lot of thongs or bikinis.

This is another area that is not what it used to be. TJ Max and Marshalls use to be a haven for amazing undies. I remember scoring some CK thongs, and bikinis back in the day. However now it’s mainly boxer briefs and tighty whites.

This slide made me happy. Not many of you buy your undies from discount stores, like Target, etc. Granted sometimes Target does have good undies it’s hit or miss.

I’m surprised more of you guys don’t shop Cheap undies or other deal sites. I think the most consistent deal site is Cheap undies. Others have come and gone.

This is an interesting slide because I was curious who buys undies from Amazon. It’s more than I thought. They have such restrictive rules for undies. Most of the more sexy pairs have to be shown without a model. It’s annoying, it’s why I like to stick to other online underwear stores
