Making muscle takes time and calories; that’s just the way it is. But you can help the process along by choosing lifts that tap into the body’s natural anabolic (tissue-building) hormonal system.
Lifts that use multiple joints and incorporate many muscle groups are the kings of muscle-building because they require a vast amount of muscle fibers to move the load. When such a big group of muscles is required to work at once, your body releases hormones like testosterone and growth hormone as a response to the stress.
There are five in particular that always seem to be more effective than the others. I want to share them with you.
1 THE SQUAT
The squat is the foundation of any good muscle-building program. It’s an amazing lift not only because it hits huge muscles like the glutes, quads, and hamstrings, but because it requires almost every single muscle in your body—from your calves to your shoulders—to turn on.
I love the squat because the movement pattern can be altered to fit each individual lifter. For example, beginners or those with mobility issues can start with the goblet squat, then progress through the front squat before starting the back squat and increasing to a larger range of movement.
2 THE DEADLIFT
The two exercises that incorporate the most muscle mass and the greatest number of joints are the squat and the deadlift. Just like the squat, the deadlift can be adapted to an individual’s ability level and orthopedic restrictions. You can use trap bars, kettlebells, or adjust the starting position by placing the bar at a higher position on a rack.
You can also do either traditional or sumo deadlifts, as long as your back is in a safe position and you’re using your hips to drive the movement. All in all, the deadlift is essential for those looking to build muscle.
3 THE PUSH-UP
The push-up has done more for improving size and definition. The efficacy of this exercise comes from the fact that push-ups can be performed for high volumes, and require more stabilization from your legs and core than the bench press. Furthermore, push-ups allow the scapula to move freely, which is healthier for your shoulders than the scapula-restricted exercises you do on a bench.
The downside of the push-up is that it is not as easily loaded as other chest exercises. But, with some chains, a weight vest, or a weight plate, push-ups can be loaded effectively.
4 THE REVERSE LUNGE
There is some debate about using unilateral (single-side) exercises to build muscle. Some say that unilateral training is less effective than bilateral training because a lifter can’t use heavy weight and therefore can’t induce the same hormonal response. However, there is one aspect of unilateral lifts that can be very beneficial to muscle-building: the accumulation of lactate.
Single-leg exercises require twice the duration and effort of bilateral exercises. This high energy expenditure results in a large accumulation of lactate in the working muscles and throughout the body.
Reverse Lunge
Of all the single-leg exercises, barbell reverse lunges are my favorite, because doing them calls for the use of multiple joints and a lot of muscles. I also like them because they recruit your glutes and hamstrings as the prime movers. Your quads, which have a habit of taking over leg movements, are relegated to an assistant position.
You can perform a reverse lunge with dumbbells held at your sides, a barbell in the front rack position, or with a barbell on your back.
5 SUSPENSION ROWS
Similar to the push-up, suspension rows to machine or dumbbell rows because they require stabilization from your core and lower-body muscles. The handles of the suspension system also allow for various hand positions, which make the exercise easier on the shoulder joint.
If your body weight isn’t enough, increase the load by elevating your feet or using a weight vest, chains, or weight plates.

Andrew Christian is no stranger to making super fun undies. The latest Trophy Boy Gigolo Boxer. It’s more of a cross between a brief and a trunk than a full on boxer. For a boxer you think longer legs and a full body. this has more of a shorter leg and two cut outs on the side. I neglected to mention the sheer pouch!
This pair is part of the Trophy Boy line, which means its made for men with larger endowments. The pouch is specifically made so it will fit and show off what a larger guy has to show. The pouch also will, literally show off, what you have. It’s not super sheer but you will see everything, so if you’re thinking of wearing to the gym, you may think again or if your’e that bold I say go for it.
It’s part of his limited edition pairs. So this will sell out quick if you don’t get it early. It is also available in blue or red. It has the “Trophy Boy” branded waistband and contrasting accents on the trim. Made out of a 93% Rayon Made From Bamboo, 7% Spandex blend so it will fit to any body type.
If you wan this pair it currently retails for $27.43 at the Andrew Christian website.

Modus Vivendi proudly presents the second part of its 2015 campaign in which its new collection is presented over a huge 10-part series in which the latest Modus Vivendi lines are sent around the globe to be worn by some of today’s most charismatic models and photographed by 10 visionary photographers.
After our first stop in Leicester, England, where we saw the Pride line sumptuously photographed by Gavin Harrison, our next stop is beautiful Newport Beach, California. The line presented is Modus Vivendi’s new Military line and the photographer who created these knock-out images is the renowned Tom Cullis. Recruiting an army of seven models (five men and two women) Cullis set to work interpreting the spirit of this new line and the results are, we think, sensational.
Xavier Guttierez, Adam Fletcher, Darrell Thomas, Matt LeMond, Rocky Russo, Mona Dash, Erin Lup and set assistant Joseph Sayers worked together with the photographer to create some of the most striking Modus Vivendi campaign images we have ever seen.
The Military line comprises boxers, briefs, jockstraps and tank tops along with hoodies, joggers and bermuda style shorts. All in khaki and black tones. A range of outstanding quality fabrics, with blends of cotton, wool, polyester and acrylic, has been used with touches of leatherette and other stylish details to create a mesmerising male clothing line, perfect for the upcoming winter.

The Wonder Jock collection is pretty much a staple with aussieBum. Meaning it’s one of the collections they keep retooling and making better and better. The WJ collection is one that has a pouch that accents and shows off what you have, consider it the male equivalent of the wonder bra!
“WJBare by aussieBum is the perfect combination of your favourite aussieBum features in one product. Made with the exclusive Wonderjock technology, an original aussieBum waistband and our super-soft modal fabric, this range encapsulates ultimate aussieBum comfort and style. Available in 4 classic colours, WJBare comes in a traditional brief and the popular long-leg styles.”
This collection is available in a hipster and a brief. The two classic styles the WJ has been known for over the year. The pairs retail for $20 for the brief and $22 for the Hipster.
Nasty Pig is a brand that isn’t afraid to take some risks! They have released the new Venom briefs. Which many may know by the title is a Snake print pattern! This was a pattern that was specifically designed by Nasty Pig for this pair. This one is one of the best they have ever released! Here is what they say about the pairs:
“Our venom briefs have an engineered snake print on them. That means the pattern doesn’t simply repeat, but the right scales fall in the right spots to accentuate the right things. The waistband has NASTYPIG woven in with a metallic thread. The colors are strong and loud…much like our customers.”
So this isn’t a pattern that was cut out and just pieced together. The scales on the pouch will accent what you have! It’s great to have more companies pay attention to patterns and prints. This pair is also available in Pink (as pictured) yellow and blue.
It retails for $29.oo on the Nasty Pig Site.
Eric Battershell is another amazing photographer. We have worked with him before and hope to do it again with him! This is Matt Zumwalt. We hope to see more from him soon

It’s been a while since we ran a Brief Distraction from Baskit, but I love this pic they took and had to share it! Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
I consider myself a pretty active guy: I swim, run, bike, and I like play tennis and volleyball as well. I’m also an avid sports fan: I enjoy watching my favorite EPL (English Premier League) teams take the pitch on Saturday morning, or catching a clutch college football (American) game with a friend on the weekend.
So, when the issue of underwear for workouts was posed to the blog’s editorial staff, I quickly volunteered to submit a piece, because I take cues both from my own athletic experiences and what I see in media in terms of what professional athletes wear under their uniforms.
Before I delve into my recommendations, I have to say that I abhor compression shorts. I don’t get why they are necessary outside of letting the major sports labels market yet another garment that they can make a quick coin on. Another thought on the issue: why would you want to compress anything down there?
I’ve instead taken a cue of what to wear from our friends across the Atlantic, where briefs are still worn proudly under shorts across the continent. Watch any sport that involves Spaniards, Italians, Poles, Russians, or any European for that matter, and you’ll probably catch a briefline, if not a full brief sighting. What you’ll see is a low rise brief or bikini, typically in white but sometimes black (or even a color to match the team uniform).
With that reference in mind, here are my recommendations for some great white briefs to wear under your gym apparel. I’ve drawn inspiration from some of my favorite tennis and soccer players.
The unlined front and seaming at the sides make the Jockey Elance bikini different from a lot of its peers. Hopefully you’ll be luckier than Nicklas Helenius and not get pantsed during a strike at goal.

These Calvin Klein Tech Active sports briefs are motto bene. I’m sure Italian tennis stud, Fabio Fognini, would agree with my assessment since he wears these under his tennis kit too.

What a joy it is when you combine the minimal cut of this Calvin Klein bikini with the soft and sumptuous modal fabric. Joe Cole would agree that bikinis are the way to go, especially when you are in the midst of a sweaty workout.
So that’s my recommendations for what to wear under your workout gear, whether you’re a professional or amateur athlete.
With a passion for thongs and underwear that shows off a butt, I was quite excited to receive my first pair of Joe Snyder underwear which happened to also be a thong. Joe Snyder is a brand that in my mind I have associated with thongs and sexy small underwear ever since I first discovered the brand. Now, I finally got to slide a pair on. It was the Tanga Pride Frame thong and its look was beautiful. This thong was black in color with a bright eye popping neon orange piping that wrapped around the entire pair. This color combination was a great choice by Joe Snyder and they have several more varieties to choose from. Another great thing about this thong is that it truly reminds me of what a thong is supposed to be, thin waistband with a high cut back, exposing the entire butt.
I decided to enjoy myself over a weekend and gave this pair a run through some errands, lunch with a friend, and good lounging at home. I slide the pair on, adjusted myself, and took a look in the mirror. This pair has a great package enhancing style to it. The piping wraps around the bulge in front giving you a nice lift that extenuates what you want to show off. An interesting thing about this pair is that the front pouch may begin to feel too small and you may feel that you are falling out of the sides. When I took a closer look I noticed a continuation of fabric under the piping at the bottom of the pouch. This is a great design catch! The pair offers a tight, lifting bulge but allows for additional fabric at the bottom to make sure nothing falls of out of the side. I loved this fact! I will say that at times I did get that feeling that I was coming out of the side and double checked, even though I knew that extra material was there.
The material is a nice soft nylon/lycra which offered comfort throughout my day. I wear a medium and the thong stayed true to size. Noting that the front pouch felt tight at times to me, I am not sure how bigger endowed men would feel wearing the thong. Perhaps as you move up in size, the pouch grows too.
I love a good thong and Joe Snyder did not disappoint. Not only was the thong beautiful to look at, the design was amazing, and the feel was great! I can’t wait to add this pair to my main rotation and wear it to work! No one will know what is under my suit that day but I will be proud of it! An additional note about the pair, Joe Snyder has made them chlorine resistant so that they may be interchangeable as underwear and swimwear! Great versatility for indoor and outdoor fun!
Pros:
- Great piping contrast
- Bulge enhancing with additional material for side support
- Slim waistband
Cons:
- Slight feeling of falling out of the side with tight pouch

Gregg Homme has just released their Fall/Winter line. Which makes me super happy! Gregg Homme makes sexy underwear that feels great and is made to stay on all day. It’s the perfect pairs to wear to work under your suit or on a hot date! Any one of the new pairs (except swimwear) can be worn for work or play. We will give you a brief overview of the new collection. Tell you about each line and then have more on the individual lines in the next few weeks!
Lover Boy – Has a strap inside the pair that shows off what you have! It is made out of a sports mesh type material. Available in three styles Square, thong and brief . It is the new Maximizer
HeatWave – is in the colors Lime/Pink trim. The line has alternating body color and waistband. Available in 4 styles: brief, jock, trunk and boxer. This line was inspired by soccer shoes.
Encore – is black with stripes of mesh mixed in, so you don’t show it off but most of it off. Available in six styles: g-string, thong, brief, bikini, boxer and shirt.
City Limits – This is the most expensive fabric ever used in production for Gregg Homme. There are multiple styles. Some have the solid fabric where as other shave round cut outs (see pic). It looks like crushed leather. The hoodie is one of the most expensive pieces ever done by Gregg Homme. Its super hot
Fake It – A mesh pair available in three accenting neon colors. Available in the brief, thong and boxer. The main body of the pair is a black mesh fabric.
Dare – A mesh fabric with a pouch that clips on and can actually be removed. This is one of the wildest pairs they have done (in my opinion) It’s super sexy. It comes in three colors and in a boxer or thong.
Nude – Gregg Homme admits they aren’t the first to do a nude line, but it leaves nothing to the imagination. But they do it right and use the same amazing fabric used in the Torrid collection. Comes in four colors and three styles. The styles are: Jock, Bikini, Brief and Thong
Weekender – Gregg Homme is no stranger to loungewear. Made out of a super soft fabric its available in a pair of pants and a Robe. Both feel amazing. I really want a robe!
Martini – This is a more basic collection for Gregg Homme. Not saying it’s simple but some great cuts that have a little bit of accent on them. The fabric when I felt it was amazing. Its available in a g-string, brief and a boxer
They are making swimwear again! The Two new Swim are:
Ardent – If you are looking for a sexy pair to wear this is it. Its a premium pair so don’t be surprised about the price. It has a solid pouch with mesh around the sides that goes all the way around to the other side of the pouch. So you will show some skin in the back!
Pool Party – Is more of a traditional swim suit. It has some great colors and cut. The one thing that stand out is the innovative pouch detail. It’s rounded. It looks really cool. It’s available in a brief or thong.
This is the new line I hope you love it and go buy some. I want one of everything!
We bring you another great picture from Joe Snyder. This time the image features the super fun Pride Frame line. It’s one of the best lines Joe Sndyer has, in my opinion.
Are you a jock brief fan or want to try one? Today is the perfect day to try one out. The Baskit $12 Tuesday pair today is the Active Jockbrief. $12 Tuesday is the day when a great pair is on sale for one day for $12. Don’t miss out.
PPU has released their new Fall/winter collection. PPU is one brand that really reinvents itself. The last collection had new boxer briefs this one is more jock and bikini heavy. Which isn’t a bad thing. They change things up in styles and colors quite often. Also, the brand is not afraid to mix it up with new materials, mesh and bright fun colors. Underwear should be fun shouldn’t it?
PPU has put their own spin on the jock several of the new pairs are a lot of fun. The jocks that I think are the most innovative are :
PPU 1455 Jockstrap is a not quite a jock brief but not quite a jock
PPU 1458 has the front of a bikini and not one but two straps in the back.
PPU 1463 has a smaller front pouch and a regular jock back.
briefs or bikinis are big in this collection too. Briefs are making a big come back across all undies. The pairs I love are:
PPU 1466 Bikini in salmon – has a super skimpy cut
PPU 1469 Bikini has a big bigger, but not by much cut of the 1466 but in three colors
PPU 1470 Bikini is the largest of the cuts with a semi transparent fabric.
