Men’s Underwear

Have you ever bought a pair of underwear that looked great on the model but not nearly as good when you’re trying them on at home? Too tight in some places, too loose in others, or the wrong size altogether… It’s frustrating especially when you’ve spent $20 – $30 or more on a single pair. I know this experience well and so over the next several weeks I’m going to be posting tips based on my own experiences on how to find a pair that will fit you well.

This week’s tip starts with the very basics (for first time buyers); sizing. You can’t expect to order a pair of underwear that fits if you’re not familiar with your own body! So it’s time to spend a few minutes checking yourself out.

TIP #1 – Know Your Body

Measure Your Waist:  The only measurement you’re going to need when ordering underwear is your waist size. These days most designers will measure the waist as the distance around the top of your hip, roughly 1-2” below your belly button. Remember to pull the measuring tape tight enough so that it’s not hanging down at the back, but not so tight that it’s digging into you. Don’t rely on the waist measurements of the jeans you wear as jean sizing can often be an inch or two off. I used to wear size 32” jeans and so by default I’d often buy size medium underwear, which were always on the loose side. One day I decided to take the time to actually measure my waist and found that I was actually 30.5”!

Check Sizing Charts: Next check out the sizing chart/guide on the website you’re ordering from (usually found at the bottom of the main page or under their FAQ or Help pages). In the description they’ll give you the appropriate size for each waist measurement range along with other fit considerations. If you’re looking at a retailer website (one that carries multiple brands, such as International Jock or Fresh Pair) you might want to refer back to the specific designer’s website for the item you want to buy as it’ll have more accurate sizing info. I have come across products that do fit smaller/larger than what’s posted in the size chart but it’s not common. An example of this is ‘Go Softwear’ products which tend to fit small, although the brand has now updated its FAQ page to state their products have a ‘European fit’ (they fit tighter than usual). If you can’t find a brand’s size chart try doing a google search (eg/ ‘Gregg Homme Sizing’) as sometimes the sizing chart is hidden somewhere on their website.

Remember Your Butt & Package: When ordering you should also consider the size of your butt and package as these can affect how well a pair of underwear fits. Try on a few pairs you have in your drawer and see how well you fill them out in the front and back. If they look baggy, but the size ‘should’ be right, then you might want to consider a smaller size. If you have a large package and butt and underwear generally fits tight then it might be worth trying a size larger than what your waist measurement says you should get. If you’re in between two sizes your package and butt will also help you determine if you should go larger or smaller – or you can go with how you like your underwear to fit (snug vs. relaxed). At 30.5” I’m at about what’s typically considered a size small. Even though I can get away with a size medium I’ll usually go with a small as I like the tighter fit. I’ve also found that a lot of underwear tends to stretch out some with wear, so buying small means they’ll only fit better with time.

If you’re considering contoured/pouch underwear know that they’re typically designed to fit the ‘slightly above average’ guy though some fit larger (such as Gregg Homme) and some fit smaller (such as Good Devil). Since there’s no specific measuring system for pouch underwear use the suggestions I’ve given above. I’ll go into more detail on finding proper fitting pouch underwear in one of my future tips. Pouch size will often increase with larger sizes.

Learn from Experience: If you’re ordering a pair from a designer you’ve ordered from before, see how the previous pair you’ve bought fits. Designers generally maintain consistent sizing across styles, so the previous pair should give you a good idea of what to expect. For example, I’ve found that Calvin Klein gives you more room in the back than other designers such as Diesel. So whereas with Diesel I might sometimes be tempted to go with a Medium for a slightly more relaxed fit, with CKs I’ll always get size Small.

Even after all these sizing considerations designers create their products based on different body types so there is no guarantee that your next pair of underwear will fit as well as you had hoped. Catch my next posts to learn more tips on how to find a designer and style that best fits you.

icon32EROS has just released a re-invented Icon Series. This is the first series of underwear they released. I remember when they came onto the underwear scene. They have grown and created many great pairs of swim and underwear. The new icon range pays homage to the original but moves it forward. Like their other collections this is available in a brief and trunk:

  • Brief available in Plum, White and Yellow
  • Trunk available in Forest, Sky and White
  • Both have the waistband with the 2EROS logo front and center
  • Brief has leg and accents matching the waistband
  • Trunk has black pipping around the pouch

Check out both on the 2EROS site. The brief retails for $26.95 and Trunk is $28.95 (both in AUD)

If you are like me, where ever you are has turned COLD! Some of us may even be breaking out the long johns! However, I wanted to find a fun pair of underwear that would be a great Underwear of the Week. I saw this pair back at Magic in the Fall. I really loved the color combinations and fabric. So I find it fitting that a company out of Australia would be our Underwear of the Week this week. That brand an pair is the 2EROS Jock Series Brief.

Underwear should be a lot of fun. Since you are a reader, we assume you feel the same way too! Here are reasons why this made our Underwear of the Week:

  • Great color combinations, specifically the Blue pair is striking with the red contrast.
  • Breathable fabric which is good for an active guy. “It’s made from ‘Tactel’ (a type of Nylon) with wicking and elastane. This treatment to the fabric allows sweat to be pushed away from the skin, keeping you drier for longer and you will definitely love how soft it will feel.”
  • Fashionable waistband inspired by the British Union Jack!
  • A Brief cut that isn’t too Brief.

You can find this pair on the 2EROS website for $32.95 AUD. So check for currency rates!

freewolfjock-jan2013From now until Wednesday, January 9th, 2013 (midnight EST), when you shop at Jockstrap Central and your product total is $40 or more, they will throw in a free jockstrap. While supplies last, the free jockstrap will be one of their Wolf Athletic Supporters (If they run out, you’ll still get a free jock, just not one of those.) On the last step of your checkout (the invoice page) you’ll be asked to choose your size and color preference.

Wolf jockstraps are phenomenal and if you don’t have one already, this is a great chance to get one to “try” out. We’re sure you’ll be hooked! If you already have one, get yourself another for when the first is in the wash

In the last few years men’s underwear companies have been making underwear for real guys. Meaning that they are taking in to account the pouch and seat sizes of all types of men. These companies have been making ergonomically designed underwear for guys needing more room up front.  We are still waiting on the underwear for the guy who has a bigger backside. The Personal Fit Factor is C-IN2’s entry into this segment of the men’s underwear market.

I have tried many of the other ergonomically designed pouch underwear lines and have been enjoying the extra room up front. So, when a new brand comes out I definitely want to try it. The Personal Fit Factor Shower is, as it states on the C-IN2 site: “A slingless approach for more room in your pouch! The inside pocket supports the male anatomy, while the inverted pleats allow for EXTRA room as needed. A new “trophy shelf” moves anatomy forward, and there’s no center seam for additional comfort.”

This may sound a little confusing but it’s a pair is with out any straps or contraptions’ but rather it gives you really great support by the pleat design. The added pleat will adjust depending on the size you package. There is nothing I hate then having to have instructions to put your underwear on!

I wore these to work to really try them out. The pair C-IN2 sent to me was a large. Which had me worried, it was a 34-36. They were a little tight but fit snuggly. I am in the process of loosing weight and am just about back in a 36! So I was really surprised by fit. I would suggest looking at the sizing before you buy, not just C-IN2 but any undies.

The Trophy Shelf pouch really gave me incredible support. It wasn’t too tight or restricting but just right. The pouch also gave me a natural support. No squishing, adjusting or anything else through out the day. It really felt like I was wearing no underwear throughout the day. I will say it’s great to get a pair of undies you don’t have to adjust in any way though out the day.  I like to think this was due to the 95 Cotton; 5 Spandex/Elastane/Lycra material blend.

I would highly recommend this if you are a guy in need of a bigger pouch. Finding underwear to fit is not always an easy task. Some the pouch isn’t big enough and can’t cover your package. While others have pouches that are too night and squeezes you through out the day.

Pros:

  • Amazing ergonomically designed pouch
  • Great construction and materials blend
  • Very reasonably priced compared to other brands

Cons

  • Only complaint is lack of colors! Only comes in White and Black

Ratings:

  • Fit – 5
  • Materials – 5
  • Construction – 5
  • Look – 4.5
  • Daily Wear – 5

2012bestof

2012 is coming to a close and I asked some of the guys on the site what was their favorite pair from last year. Some maybe we reviewed and others are ones that were purchased. But it was a great year for undies!

Alex – My favorite pair of 2012 are the Andrew Christian Almost Naked Air Jock. This super comfy pair of underwear took one of my favorite briefs, the Almost Naked, and made them better by taking off the butt. I don’t know if it just makes me feel sexier or is more comfortable but matting these briefs with a jock is absolutely amazing. Come 2013 more brief/jock combos will be making their way into my undies drawer.

UNBTim – My Favorite pair this last year is the Joe Snyder Pride Frame Bikini. This was my very first pair I have ever had of them and the fit and feel was amazing. I loved the pouch and the way they fit all day! They are truly amazing pair of undies. I have to mention the N2N Bodywear Air Trunk as my other favorite. This is because they are so breathable and lightweight. N2N Did something really amazing with the air line!

theamazingT- Andrew Christian Almost Naked Brief in Turquoise. I consider this my 2012 pair because I didn’t own any of the Almost Naked briefs until I started working for this site last winter. After having the Almost Naked brief in my collection, it very quickly became my go to. Whether I just wanted a comfortable pair of undies to lounge around in, or I wanted a sexy bulgy pair to wear out on the town, the choice ended up coming down to my AC Almost Naked’s every time. I now own multiple pairs from the collection, with different colors and cuts, but these will always be my “first love”..

MrShane-I purchased a Baskit Jock in olive green this last year and I absolutely love it. It is no secret that I am a major jockstrap fan as I have about 25 of them and wear them at least three times a week. Well, the Baskit jockstrap is one of my favorites. It is extremely soft and comfortable. The pouch is adequate in size without being confining while being supportive and the waistband and leg straps are both soft and comfortable. I love the Baskit logo in the contrasting olive green color on the bright white waistband. There is nothing about this jockstrap that I can find at fault. I love it!

UNBThongGuyObviously Chromatic Collection Low Rise Thong -My favorite thong I got to review this year was by Obviously. It’s probably the perfect thong. Soft material, great design, comfortable pouch and strap. I can wear it all day and forget I am wearing it. It’s hands down the best thong in my col

I was lucky enough to receive a package of a few pairs of C-IN2. One of the pairs was the Yoga Plan Short.  Have you ever wanted a pair that moves with you? Well this line was made for yoga and should be able to bend and stretch into any position you can get into.  I have tried many other sports brands and they never really kept their form through out the day.

I put these through their paces at work.  When I put them on hoping that they would keep their shape. Like I said many times before, a few other brands the legs stretch, ride up and make me want to take them off as fast as I put them on. The material is 86 Nylon; 14 Spandex blend, when I put it on it felt great. It wasn’t too tight and restraining but rather felt just right. The short also has a wider waistband then the usual C-IN2, about 2 inches thick. The short really held its place through out the entire day.  Honestly it felt like I wasn’t wearing underwear at all. This is saying something since when I wear boxer briefs they are usually noticeable some how though out the day.

There is only one con to the entire pair that is not a defined pouch. A few times through out the day I noticed it but it was pretty rare. Part of me wondered if this is done this way due to construction. I don’t think you could have a defined pouch and have the great fit. It’s only a minor complaint.

Here is the area where it really impressed me. I wore the pair to bed. If you are like a regular brief guy like me , wearing a boxer brief to bed could be horrible. However, this pair didn’t ride up when I slept. Its rare I wear a review pair to bed. C-IN2 has made a really great pair of underwear. I wouldn’t recommend it for daily wear but if you’re big time into yoga or other similar activities then I can almost guarantee you will love them.  They are a little pricey but is about the same price as some of the other sports underwear on the market. The higher end UnderArmour and Nike.

Pros:

  • Amazing fit
  • Great construction
  • Feels like you aren’t wearing underwear

Cons

  • No defined pouch
  • Could be pricey for every day wear

Ratings:

  • Fit – 4.5
  • Materials – 5
  • Construction – 5
  • Look – 4.5
  • Daily Wear – 4.5
  • Overall – 4.7

We got a chance to catch up with Geovanny. We first saw him at Magic a few years ago. He has released a new line and we got to ask him a few questions about the line.

We have seen you grow over the last two wears; can you tell us about your new collection? How does it differ from the previous collection?

Well yes…I’m back …after being gone for a year and half for school (cosmetology) I’m so excited for the new collection. The new collection has a sporty gym look and feel to it. I love working out and staying healthy. That’s where the inspiration came from for the new Geovanny Sport collection. The new collection has several new designs and is mixed with mesh fabric for a cooler and more breathable comfort level. The colors are a mix of red black and white. Cool warm and bold.

What got you into designing underwear?

I became an underwear designer after being an underwear model for almost 10yrs. I paid attention. I always wanted to have some type of fashion collection and underwear seemed like the most logical choice. I had the fist Gay Male strip show and was designing costumes for the show and that helped me a lot when I started design underwear. I worked with “Jocko” Mr. Michael Lee for about 6yrs …everything from modeling to selling …. It was a great experience.

I think you have really great designs that show off a guy’s body, how do you get inspiration for your designs?

I wanted to have a collection that brought everything together with out lacking the other. Comfort, Sex appeal, and the modern man. I’m a dancer so comfort and durability went right in. All off my designs are signature pieces for my collection …very few out there can say that. I’m a very sexual creature …so sex sex! Had to be in there! The Garter Jock the #1 selling Jock in the world. There is nothing sexier. Combining the classics with what’s hot now…example …escallop side split on The Geovanny brief inspired by the classic 70s running shorts combined with the power pouch for more pronounced packaged for the modern man.

Your photography is fun and sexy, you model in them, do you also direct the shoots?

Yes … that’s one of the most fun things about the whole experience, and I do model in the shoots as well. Its one of the things that makes my collection so different and unique from the others … I didn’t go to design school …I’m not rich.m just someone who has lots of dreams and likes making them come true. I’ve always told my friends …after everything I’ve been through ….. If I can do this… imagine what you could do. 🙂

What is your favorite piece from the current collection?

That’s not a fair question, that’s like asking a mother witch one of her kids does she love the most. …lol… well if I had to choose I would say I’m very happy the way the new Kevin Retro Runner turned out.

What is next for Geovanny?

Well I just came out with a fun new Gym line with t-shirts that are sooo cool and answers the everyday gym question …What are you working on today??? Check out the new gym shirts from Geovanny sport. “Chest Day”  “Back Day”  “Arms Day” and ” Legs Day” …Stay focused. I’ve also designed a very sexy girls piece as well. I have lost of girl followers and they are very excited about it.
