Sometime around middle school I became very interested in the ad circulars in the Sunday paper. Sears, Dillard’s, JC Penney, and K-Mart were always having sales on men’s underwear. Often the photo was just five boxers in a package, but if you were lucky maybe they’d show an empty pair of briefs floating against the background. Then there were those times, those lucky Sundays, when if you’d hunt long enough you’d find a photo of an actual man in underwear. Maybe he’d have a towel around his neck like he was about to take a shower or a mug in his hand like he was just waking up in his nylon store-brand bikinis that came in a five color assortment. He was always staring off in the distance confidently, masculine, yet sexually inert.

I began to imagine stories behind these images. Did the model feel silly stripping down in front of the camera crew? Does he normally wear nothing but striped briefs the house? Did they let him keep the underwear, and did he put them on for his girlfriend later that night? Why couldn’t he be holding a beer and winking at the camera? Why wasn’t he sitting at the edge of a bed, leaning back on his arms, face downcast, vulnerable, yet offering himself to the viewer’s gaze?

I had developed a thing for underwear. I had grown up wearing Hanes and Fruit of the Loom tightie whities. In my adolescent mind it was something no one else saw, so why would you go out and buy special ones? Like those ones that were tomato red and barely covered your hips and probably showed the outline of your penis and probably felt so light and yet so snug…

When I went off to college I began buying underwear for myself. It was always a nice little charge of energy when I put one of my special pairs on. This felt right. Over the years I’ve tried more and more kinds and brands and cuts and I still can’t wait to get home and open a new package. Recently I decided to put my love of underwear out there a bit more (in an anonymous internet kind of way) and embrace what I’ve spent years thinking about. My collection continues to grow and I love hearing other guys talk about underwear.

Underwear, to me, signifies a man’s assertion that he is a sexual being. A guy may be a mild-mannered desk jockey, but those leopard print jockeys under his pants tell otherwise. They mean that he tries harder than ratty boxers with the elastic worn out. They mean he thinks about what it’s like to undress in front of someone, to invite someone to look and to touch. It means that he opened up his drawer this morning and thought, “I want to feel sexy today”. He headed out the door with that little extra charge of energy in his step. And that’s what I love about underwear. Let’s get into this.

hero-needed

We need a hero. A hero that is a champion for men’s underwear. We are at a point where men’s underwear is going mainstream. Meaning over the last few years more guys gay and straight have been paying attention to underwear. Heck, we have more underwear companies then anytime I can remember in the history of underwear.

When I say we need a champion, I mean we need a spokes model for men’s underwear.  A famous athlete, actor or entertainer that will step up and show the public  that great men’s underwear is here to stay.

In the 70s and 80s we had Jim Palmer sporting Jockey bikinis in mainstream magazines. They used to run in People and I think Newsweek. For those of you not familiar with Mr. Palmer, he was a Major League Baseball star with Midwest all American looks. Having such a sports star in an underwear ad gave men’s underwear a sort of legitimacy and not put on some back page ads.

Flash-forward about 10 years and we have Marky Mark aka Mark Walberg in Calvin Klein boxer briefs. The newest hybrid style of the day.  This ad was even featured in Times Square in NYC. This was the last time we had a major market campaign featuring a celebrity. It’s time for a new underwear hero

This came about due to a conversation I had with @ undieluvr on twitter. Her suggested that Underarmour create a sports thong and have an athlete promote it. It got me thinking that we need this for all undies.  It’s time to bring great undies to the masses. Showing a major celebrity in them will only do this.

We currently have stars promoting underwear. The ones stars are David Beckham, Mario Lopez and Tim Tebow.

  • David Beckham is no stranger to promoting underwear. He’s done several shoots for Armani before he started his own line at H&M. His line is called David Beckham Bodywear and is available exclusively at H&M Retailers.  Also this was one of the first men’s underwear Super Bowl commercials.
  • Mario has endorsed his own line Rated M. The line has been out a few years. Unlike David Beckham’s line, Rated M is available at many online and brick and mortar retailers. It has been around for about two years.
  • Tim Tebow was the spokes person for Jockey. He was to be the new Jim Palmer, but he was never photographed in the Underwear. This was brought up to Jockey and they said they were fine with him not wearing the underwear in ads. His announcement had the most comments on our Facebook page.

We need to have a guy come out of the underwear closet and say that they LOVE underwear. It doesn’t matter if he’s a sports star, Movie star or entertainer.

It makes me think who would be the perfect guy for the job. It would need to be someone mainstream to catch the attention of the general public and making them consider buying great undies.  Some suggestions would be

modern-heros

  • Singer – Adam Levine – Lead Singer for Maroon5. He’s no stranger to getting naked and showing skin
  • Athlete – Eli Manning – The QB for the NY Giants. He’s got the wholesome look of Jim Palmer and a personality that could be great on camera
  • Actor – Matt Bomer – He’s been in Magic Mike so he’s been seen in underwear on film. He wore a thong in Magic Mike
  • Athlete – Michael Phelps – The Olympic gold medalist swimmer. He’s been seen in Speedos for millions on TV and is comfortable in them
  • Athlete – Colin Kaepernick – The Super Bowl QB for the San Francisco 49’ers who just appeared nude in the ESPN Magazine body issue.

These are just a few suggestions. I would love to hear who you guys think we should have as our Underwear Spokesman? Who has the body and the personality to speak the virtues of men’s undies?

Color to me is one of the most important things in underwear. It allows us to show our personality, even when we have to wear a uniform or suit to work. It adds a personal level to the underwear we wear. We know this because we have heard from you guys that you wear your navy suit to work and a pink jock or purple brief under your suit pants.

Are there any colors off limits in men’s underwear? We may have our own personal limits but companies make underwear in every color of the rainbow. We thought we would share 5 pairs with great color on the market now!

hom-elysee-briefHow would you love a brief that looks like a traditional brief but is made out of incredible materials? Then you need to try the HOM Elysse Mini Brief. HOM is a brand that doesn’t get enough coverage here in the US. Our European readers have known about this brand for many years.

BRIEF will debut in Charlotte’s Historic South End Neighborhood on Wednesday, September 4th. BRIEF, a men’s underwear, swimwear and loungewear store will redefine how men shop and look in all things intimate, active and leisure.

Dan Mauney, or Dan the Shoe Man – known by many in the area, is the owner and merchandiser for this unique new concept. .  With over two years in the planning, Mauney chose South End after canvasing most of the neighborhoods in Charlotte. When asked why South End, Mauney replied, “South End is the future of Charlotte.  The vibe, the energy, the convenience and the people brought me here. I found the 8,200 square feet space (which BRIEF will occupy at 1,000 square feet) early on and kept returning to it.  It’s perfect. The neighborhood is right!”

Heralding from a successful charity fashion show produced by Mauney, BRIEF, a brick and mortar store, will redefine men’s underwear/swimwear. The shopper will delve into the world of the best designers including internationally known brands such as Calvin Klein, TommyJohn, Diesel, SAXX Underwear, 2Xist, C-IN2, Parke & Ronen, Baskitwear, Andrew Christian, N2N Bodywear, Speedo, Hugo Boss, Gregg Homme, 2Eros, Whittall and Shon, Hanro  among many others.  The collections of swimwear will offer everything from racers, square cuts to traditional board shorts. Finally, loungewear will include everything from leisure, weekend casual, athletic, yoga wear and robes. Mauney adds, “With our loungewear, we want to be your go-to source from everything from workout gear to simply lounging around the home.”

BRIEF became a reality after several long-term partnerships were reunited. John Fryday of Fryday & Doyne was the architect for the new store.  Mauney and Fryday began a professional relationship over  twelve years ago when Fryday was selected as the architect for STEP, one of Mauney’s first stores in Charlotte. He designed two additional renovations for Sloan and STEP.  Along with that twelve-year-relationship, Dan met contractor, Bjorn Greene of Concept Building and Restoration. After the trio joined forces and included custom cabinet maker, Dana Whisnant of Diversified Cabinetry, BRIEF is ready to make its debut!

The new location will also be the future home of SHU, a 4.000 square feeet ladies shoe, handbag, jewelry and accessory store, slated to open the beginning of October.  Plans include adding men’s shoes by Spring, 2014. Additionally, FLēX, will be a 3,000+ event space utilized for in-house trunk shows, fashion shows, shopping events and outside parties and events. Next week, ‘Say I DO” Transformation Series, a 10-week program including bootcamps, yoga classes and nutritional guidance will christen the space. The series will feature Petro Martynyuk Fitness + Wellness and will be sponsored by SHU and BRIEF.

The new men’s store will operate under the following hours: Monday-Friday 10-6 and Saturday 10-5. The E-commerce site, designed by Civil Buffalo, will be live by the week of September 15th .  For more information, please visit www.shopbrief.com to join the company email list and follow them on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest.

The pair of underwear I am reviewing is the Joe Snyder Mini Shorty in shiny black with white trim.  The shiny black fabric is a nice color with the silver waistband and white side areas and trim.  The mini shorty has a contrasting silver waistband with Joe Snyder sewn into the waistband in bold lettering, but not centered above the pouch on this pair.  The waistband has a metallic sheen to it and the pouch is slight.

After trying them on, the waistband is comfortable at two inches in width.  The slight pouch was conforming and defining with a two piece formation.  While this is a trunk, it is called a mini shorty due to the visual appearance being that of a pair of retro gym shorts.  There is no fly in this mini shorty which is the new norm and who really used a fly anyway.  Do not get mad if you did.  Just saying.  The mini shorty was pieced together in multiple pieces to create the pouch and rear to provide a better fit and make it more conforming.  The seat is two panels and it seems to be contoured to fit close to the skin.  Trust me.  You know the rear seam is there as it is made to really highlight the rear.  The pouch functions normally and is a good size for the average guys.  You guys that constantly talk about needing more room will need more room in these.  These fit well and create a nice line.  This is my second or third pair of Joe Snyder underwear and I enjoyed them.  These would be a really nice pair of underwear to wear under jeans as they sit low on the hips and are tight.

While wearing this pair of boxer briefs, I went about my normal Monday morning of late breakfast, teaching class, and relaxing at home afterwards.  It was a typical day for most guys, I suppose.  The pair fit well, looked nice, did not bunch up, but felt a bid odd as that rear seam really wanted to define my rear a bit more than my rear wanted to be defined.  This pair of underwear would be good for wearing under shorts or loose fitting pants as I wore them under tighter clothing and I barely felt them.  I would consider wearing it as workout wear as they were tight and supportive.

I received a size large in this mini shorty.  This size should cover a 32-24 pant size.  Sizing was a bit off as I am a size large in the vast majority of underwear and these are a bit tight.  This pair can be found for around 30-35$ on most websites and in stores in black, white, red, and turquoise.

I enjoyed the color combination, the metallic silver waistband, the white side panels, the white trim, and the way the pouch fit.  80% Polyamide and 20% Spandex fabric combination makes this a stretchy and conforming pair of underwear that I enjoyed.  This mini shorty had nothing major about it that I could complain about.  I did find the rear seam to be slightly annoying.  The cut of this pair of underwear may be better suited for guys that are more lean with perfectly straight sides versus an average guy, like me, to wear.

Overall, this was a good pair of underwear and I felt comfortable while wearing them.  The design is conforming to the body and creates a nice profile from the front and the rear.  I enjoyed this mini shorty and look forward to wearing them again.

body-aware-well-endowed-brief

Underwear for the well-endowed guy is one of the biggest, pardon the pun, request we get here at UNB. Speaking from experience it’s hard to find great underwear with enough room in the pouch. There is nothing worse then undies that don’t fit either in the pouch or seat!

BodyAware is tackling this problem. They have created the Well-Endowed Brief. It’s based on their Italian Shaper Brief, but they added an extra roomy pouch. Their site says “made for the extremely well-endowed men who wants to show it off.

The brief is made out of 90%Polyamide 10%Elastane material that is slightly transparent, so you will be showing off more then just a bulge under pants. They have created incredibly stretchy structured pouch that should be able to give you great support without binding or feeling constricted.  Also the pair is just three colors, white, navy and turquoise.

Sizing is a bonus in this pair. This is one of the few brands that make an XS and XXL. This means you can go from 27 inch waist to 43. So no matter your size you can wear this pair.

We will be getting a pair of these soon and will let you know how they are! More companies are paying attention to the needs of guys. It is available at the BodyAware site for $18.50
