One thing that you’ll soon discover about me is that I have a twisted, unexplainable, quirky sense of humor.  Needless to say, when my second opportunity to review a new pair of undies arrived, Tribe generated a lot of initial thoughts.  The mere word conjures up the idea of intrusive missionaries who have been captured and tied to stakes, engulfed in flames while surrounded by half-naked pigmies protecting their tribe.  Therefore, I had high expectations that this kelly green pair of Tribe boxer briefs would live up to the wild and uninhibited image the company’s name conveys.

Let me start by saying that these are the most comfortable and light-weight boxer briefs I’ve sported in quite some time.  Their first test run included wearing them at work all day and then to the gym in the afternoon.  Throughout the day, I couldn’t believe the amazingly cool and comfy feelings this pair offered while still holding its shape.  The waistband and elastic around the legs stayed in place despite the extremely soft and diverse blend of fabrics, including 94% polyester, 6%elastane, and 100% modal lining

This Modal / Polyester pair falls within Tribe’s Short Boxer line and it’s perfect for the active guy as these are designed to hold you in all the right places.  Per the Australian based company, this blend is ideal for the gym as it has 50% more moisture regain and air flow than cotton.  Modal will not pill, is anti-crease, and will retain its brilliant color.  Some noticeable detailing includes the Tribe logo that is front and centered at the top of the waistband.  Double stitching runs around the entire waist and down the center of the pouch in addition to around the bottom of each leg lending to a well balanced and symmetrical esthetic.

While I don’t care to join those missionaries back at the camp anytime soon, I do feel my inner tribal instincts surface every time I slip into these well fitting, sporty boxer briefs.

I have been a facebook fan of Tribe for sometime now.  When I was given the awesome privilege to review Tribe’s Printed Mesh Trunk, I jumped on it.  I am so happy I did.  They are a super comfortable, black, white, and lime green sheer trunk.  Anyone who has followed UNB for any length of time probably knows I love sheer undies, that is, as long as I am able to have the support and I am able to show off for my wife at the same time.

I love the design of the fabric.  It gives coverage and style.  The pattern is fun and has a splash of color that gives it an extra punch.  There was no binding and no riding…simply pure comfort from the time I put them on in the morning until I took them off that evening.

These undies are stylish, comfortable, breathable, and made of soft, stretchy mesh material.  The front pouch is lined with 100% Natural Modal for extra comfort.  It seems that Australia really knows how to produce underwear and here is additional proof!

Thank you, Tribe, for sending these awesome trunks for us to try.  I really enjoyed them.

There is a still a thunder from down under with Australian underwear.  Tribe is most certainly part of that thunder.  This is the second pair of Tribe underwear I’ve been given to review, and just like the first, this pair does not disappoint.  The trunk brief has a little more fabric and covering than the standard brief, and as someone who likes covering more than the next guy, that’s a very good thing.  So without further a due, here’s my review on the Tribe Trunk Brief in the Cobblestone pattern.

It’s always exciting to get underwear for review, especially when they are from a different country!  When they arrived, of course I tried them on instantly, and it was a match made in heaven!  This is a seriously great pair of underwear!  They have just enough coverage for me, a little more than the previous pair I reviewed (The Print Brief).  With that “just-right” coverage comes a “just-right” feeling, leaving me to be a happy camper.  Like the other pair, the Trunk Brief is comprised of 94% Polyester and 6% Elastane, equaling a 100% comfortable pair of underwear!

As with all pairs I am given to review, I put them through my daily test, which pretty much puts them through everything; sitting, walking, and working out.  It’s the whole package…no pun intended.  With no surprises at all, these undies passed with flying colors!  I love the way they feel and how they support, plus the pattern is so simple that it’s more enjoyable than some of the craziest patterned pairs I own.  They are a nice escape to the simple life, which is definitely something everyone needs!

Australia seems to be the happening place for underwear these days, there are quite a few brands putting out some really good stuff. A brand that is going above and beyond is Tribe. In my mind, a company named Tribe would have tropical patterns, and of course, they do. Some of their unique patterns include: Cobblestone, Palm, Jungle, and Skull.  To be quite honest, it is one thing to have a cool design, but to have a cooler name to go with it completes the package.  Now that I’ve given you a brief rundown, let’s focus on the point of the review, the Palm Standard Brief.

This is my second time writing for UNB, and alas, my second pair to review.  If I said I wasn’t super excited to get these, then I would be lying.  When they arrived, I tried them on instantly, and for the most part, I was pretty pleased.  They do seem a tad skimpy, and I felt that there could have been more coverage in the rear, but that could be because of incorrect sizing on my end.  Besides that, everything else about these undies is great.  They feel great as they are made of 94% Polyester.  There is quite a bit of support in the front, something that I find to be rather hit and miss, and it’s so much better when it’s a hit.  These are definitely a hit!

Before I can faithfully write a review, I have to wear the briefs for a normal day and see if they can pass the test.  The next morning, I put them on, went to class, had after-class meetings, and then hung around the pad until bedtime.  The results…an overwhelming pass! I didn’t want to take them off because they were so comfortable.  But, if you love something, you have to set it free to your hamper.  I did set them free, but I plan to reunite myself with them very soon!

How did you get started in the Men’s Underwear business?

12 years ago while on holiday we read an article in a tabloid magazine which mentioned that David Beckham liked to wear Victoria’s underwear around the house sometimes because the fabric felt so nice, we laughed at the time but then both thought ‘why isn’t there anything available for men like that’. So we started to do some investigations and realised that men’s underwear was really quite boring and functional, & that no one had really done anything to cover the fashion, or sexy side for men’s underwear.

We spent quite a long time doing research and speaking to lots of guys as to what they were after in fit and comfort and 3 years before we launched we started doing testing with lots of different fabrics and styles.

You have some interesting styles, what is your inspiration for designing?

The inspiration behind our designs comes from wanting to use really beautiful, soft, tactile fabrics and make them into men’s underwear which is masculine & sexy.

When we launched the range in 2008 we tried to get just the right mix of sexiness and comfort, we tried all the fabrics in the 6 different styles (from slim side brief to Long Boxer Short), to see what fabric worked best in the different styles and changed the fit according to what ooked good on the body. All our styles are wear tested because it is not just about what looks good, but also about standing the test of time.

The underwear you make is very sexy, what has been the feed back from your customers on the lines?

Guys are absolutely loving the fabrics and styling we are offering because it is so different from what is presently available & with 6 different styles to choose from our range covers the needs of every guy.

Our soft covered waistband has proved to be a real winner, with the feedback we are getting that it is unbelievably comfortable, especially compared to the high branded waistbands that tend to dig into you especially if you have put on a few pounds.

Tell us about your your new swimwear line, when did the line come out?

When we first launched a lot of guys thought that some of our underwear looked like swimwear because of the refined styling & funky prints and after customers were constantly asking us if we were going to do swimwear we decided to do a range which we launched in September 2009 and the response so far has been fantastic, guys seem to really be loving our vibrant funky prints and comfortable supportive fit.

The theme this year with our swimwear is ‘Hawaiian Holiday’, so we had prints done that reflected that summer feel. All our prints have been done by a heat transfer printing process (in Australia) for an incredibly vibrant & soft finish & to make our swimwear a bit more unique a lot of the styles have been hand cut for the perfect placement of the prints.

What are your favorite pairs you sell currently?

Bettina : My favourite pair of underwear is the Black Devore Short Boxer, because the fabric looks amazing on and is beautiful to touch as the pattern is in velvet (very lush).

My favourite pair of swimwear is the Hibiscus Swim Short, with a White background & vibrant Orange, Red & Yellow Hibiscus it just looks amazing and remind me of summer & the little short style just looks fantastic on (if you have got it why not flaunt it).

Tony : My favourite pair of underwear would have to be the Devore Short Boxer, the fabric feels incredibly soft on the skin and I love the styling of the short boxer with the shaped leg as I find it very comfortable.

The NEW Palm and the Modal / Spandex are also a winner with me as they are incredibly soft fabrics and feel great to wear.

We said Australian companies are starting to make a big influence on the men’s underwear market around the world, why do you think that is?

Australian companies in general are renowned for their quality and ingenuity and this is very evident in the men’s underwear market. TRIBE is 100% Australian designed & made and that gives us an advantage in quality control and being able to act quickly to the needs of our customers. Australia is regarded as a very masculine country with our outdoor lifestyle with Surf Lifesavers, Football player’s and The Outback and as such breeds a ‘can do’ attitude, this is entrenched in our business ethics and a belief that we can compete with anyone on the world stage, also our distance from the rest of the world, means we are less influenced by European and American trends and as such tend to set our own trends which the rest of the world have started to follow.

Any plans for the future you can share with us?

We are currently working on a new range of underwear and swimwear with exciting new fabrics and colours which will be released in mid 2010 so keep your eyes peeled for that !!

We are getting a lot of sales and enquiries Internationally, so in 2010 we will be looking for Retail opportunities in America & Europe.

There have been some really great trends in men’s underwear this past year.  I think we saw a few changes to the men’s underwear market that will have an impact on the future.  It was sort of a break out year, meaning more companies took chances by stepping outside the box.  To me, that is a very good thing.  There is nothing worse than going back to the 90’s of the white/grey/black period.  This year, some of the more interesting trends were enhancing, pink, and mesh, and the break-out of Australian companies.

ENHANCING

I think the first trend of the year was enhancing underwear.  I noticed it at the end of 2008 and then a wave of companies came out with new styles that either enhanced the front or the back.  Andrew Christian really embraced this with both the Flashback and Show-it lines.  This proved to be a good decision as these two styles were constantly sold out this past year, making them the best selling enhancement underwear of the year.

That is not to say others didn’t produce other enhancement underwear styles.  Proof of this is, if you take a look at the International Jock website, you will see an entire section dedicated to enhancing underwear.  This fact alone tells you we have a big shift in the design of underwear.  The companies that seem to focus on enhancing are Tulio, Ergowear, Obviously, Joe Snyder, Calvin Klein, C-IN2, Cocksox, and many more!

When I first saw enhancing underwear, I was a little skeptical.  I wasn’t sure this would take off, but it did and in a big way.  Pardon the pun!  When we spoke to Sean Ashby at AussieBum, he noted that many of the buyers of the enhancing styles were straight guys.  They wanted to take what they have and make it seem bigger!  I thought for sure it would have been more the gay male population that wanted this enhancing technology, but without regard to sexuality, enhancing has changed the face of men’s underwear and will be around for a long time to come.

PINK

Next trend that seemed to take off is pink.  We wrote in an article a while back that pink is the new black.  I think pink is a great color for men’s underwear.  I know there are a lot of you out there saying, “I would NEVER wear pink underwear!”  The reason I like it and think it took off the way it did is it’s simply that…unexpected!  When you think of men’s underwear, you think of blues, reds, whites, and other bold masculine colors.  You don’t think of something as pink or pastel being quite manly enough.  Pink, however, came into its own last in 2009.

The trend started a few years back with Baskit‘s Pink Jock.  It then sort of disappeared and then returned strong this year.  There were two companies I really noticed that used pink, being Timoteo and C-IN2. Timoteo used pink in its low rise briefs and jockstrap.  Both were equally as hot where as C-IN2 used pink in its own line.  They created the Prime line containing briefs, trunks, and t-shirts, all in pink.  Both styles are still available.

Will pink live on this next year?  I think pink will stick around but I don’t think it will be as big as in 2009.  I think the release of pink will make way for many other colors never before thought of for men’s underwear.

MESH

The next trend is Mesh.  Granted, mesh can look cheap, but many companies made it very sexy and fun this year.  I have seen mesh, over the years in the back of a magazine (yes I’m dating myself), and it never really looked comfortable.  They were the kind designed to be taken off, if you know what I mean.  This is not the case of the new mesh underwear of today.  They are designed for comfort and sex appeal.

Mesh really made it mainstream this year with companies such as Andrew Christian, Go Softwear, and Aussiebum creating various styles.  This year also brought new players into the underwear business. BumGear is a line that has mostly mesh underwear that is fun and creative.  The best thing I like about BumGear is they are very colorful.  Most mesh I have seen in the past has been plain black or white.  I love that BumGear has put thought into colors and focuses on different styles.

If you didn’t hear our podcast with AussieBum, they created their mesh pair as a way of getting a certain model to wear them.  They weren’t serious about producing them, but after they had the model try them on, they were on to something and decided to create it as a line.

Mesh, I believe, will continue to be strong into 2010.  The mesh segment mainly came into its own at the end of 2009.  More and more companies are releasing them and I hope we continue to see bold and creative styles.

AUSTRALIAN UNDERWEAR

I think of this year as the break out year for Australian underwear companies.  We are all familiar with AussieBum.  The company has been around for ten years and has created an image of a fashion forward company.  They never stand still and something new is always coming out.  One thing I predict for AussieBum is they are soon to be a major player in the US market, if not already.  I think they currently have an influence on some designs, but that influence is going to grow.  If they were able to land a major department store to be the exclusive retailer, such as Macy’s, Bloomingdales, or Nordstrom, they would take off even greater and obtain a larger market share.

AussieBum is not the only company we saw out of Australia.  The other ones that seem to be growing are Tribe, Obviously, and Cocksox.  I know there are even more underwear companies in Australia, but these are the ones making it into the world market.  Cocksox is one of our favorites here at UNB.  As you know, I love undies with a good pouch and that is what Cocksox is known for supplying, hence the name.  Everything I have tried from them has been awesome.  They make great undies that fit a guy as underwear should.

The next company is Tribe.  They are stepping outside the box of traditional underwear.  They are doing mesh, patterns, and different fabrics.  They are relatively new and I think we will see more from them in the next few years.

Last, but certainly and never least is Obviously.  Obviously is another one with a great pouch.  When I first tried them, I wasn’t sure what I thought.  After wearing them for a day, I greatly appreciated their ergonomic design and unbelievable support.

All three companies aren’t afraid to do things differently in the areas of style, colors, and pouch design.  They have an audience that is willing to do new things.  We, in America, seem to have buyers who settle with functionality of underwear instead of fashion.  They need underwear and get the most inexpensive brands to do the job.  Times, however, are changing!  I know many guys in the states who have ordered all three brands and had them shipped.  Obviously now has American distributors such as International Jock and a few other sites.  Stay tuned and we will see more Australian companies emerge and I think all three mentioned will get much bigger on the world market and not only in the states.

These are only a few trends of the year.  I would love to hear what you guys thought were big trends for 2009.  What do you think we missed or overlooked?  I didn’t want the article to be too long so I just picked four!  There are so many more we could have chosen!
