Ultra boxer

Marcuse is going to release a new basic underwear line called ULTRA. As you can see by the pics, just because something says it’s basic doesn’t mean it’s boring. The new line will be available in black, white and grey. I can hear a few of you groan. I am admittedly not fan of most companies that use those three colors . However that said, I think the design is something that will win you over. When I first looked the pics over, I didn’t focus on color but the designs. It wasn’t till I read the email that I realized those were the only color choices.

Marcuse didn’t make them solid grey, black or white. They created a cool waistband that accents the color. One thing I really like is the Marcuse “R” is the same red that is used in the accent stitching. Also, they created a great pouch in the pair. You can tell they put a lot of work in this new line.

So these are anything but boring. Marcuse has designed a classic and fun line. Its great to see a company take on a basic line and put their own spin on it. You will be able to find these at the Marcuse site this next week!

Head on over to Los Angeles-based International Jock where every brand that’s “Made in America” is 25% off during the first week of July. With Independence Day upon us, International Jock suggests it’s time to take a peek at exactly where “American” underwear is coming from. Most underwear and swimwear isn’t born on U.S. soil. Nearly 98% of the clothes sold in the States are made overseas. With so much fashion created outside America, International Jock’s “Made in USA” sale makes it easier than ever to support those companies who have stayed loyal to the USA.

International Jock carries brands from all over the world and has always made it a point to seek out and support American manufacturers. The company carries an extensive line of fashion brands made exclusively in America and has seen a growing customer demand for American goods. Hot-selling “Made in USA” brands like Go Softwear, Pistol Pete, N2N, Sauvage Swimwear, and LA Sporting Club are just a few of the trendy designers that are currently burning up the charts at International Jock.

internationaljock4 internationaljock6 internationaljock5

In a competitive retail environment where it can be financially enticing to move garment production out of the country, these brands have chosen to keep their manufacturing stateside despite various challenges. Greg Olvera, the president of Go Softwear, says that his company has been designing and manufacturing their clothing in downtown Los Angeles since 1996. “Manufacturing in the USA has its challenges, one being higher labor and material cost,” he says. “However, the benefits are better quality control, quick reaction time, minimal barriers, exclusivity, and most importantly, keeping jobs in the USA. And our customers love it!”

Not only does American production result in better quality assurance, but it is also great for the economy. Mike McGinley, CEO of LA Sporting Club, addresses the advantages of keeping clothing manufacturing in the U.S.: “Besides the immediate benefit that local workers receive with their paycheck, this income gets put back into the U.S. economy by giving them money to spend at local restaurants and stores.”

In addition to helping the economy and expanding U.S. exports (International Jock ships these brands all over the world), making garments in the same country where people buy them gives designers the upper hand in meeting consumers’ needs. McGinley explains, “If our customer wants a lime green swimsuit, chances are it isn’t being made by the thousands overseas. We, however, can fill that niche with our smaller, more unique production runs. LASC owners, managers and employees are tapped into the mainstream market and know what is happening in style trends in Europe and in the metro U.S. markets even before the average consumer knows what to expect in the coming seasons.”

While many clothing designers are American born and raised, others arrived in America and have remained faithful ever since. Sami Tarrab, the president of Pistol Pete, moved to the States with his family to pursue a better life. When it comes to why designers choose the patriotic route and stick to manufacturing on American soil, perhaps Tarrab says it best:

“We are at a price disadvantage when competing for stores and shelf space with brands made in China, India, or other countries. But producing in the USA affords us so much more: the ability to develop strong relationships with our contractors and attain amazing production turnaround, all while respecting the dignity of those we employ and caring for our environment.”

So, how does the future look for American clothing manufacturing? “Garment work is coming back to the U.S., as manufacturers realize that costs associated with shipping from overseas are increasing,” says Simon Southwood, the Vice-President of Sauvage Swimwear. “And, the public is more aware, and given the choice, will buy American.” International Jock has made that choice easier and more affordable than ever by lowering the prices on all of their American brands and identifying them with prominent “Made in USA” logos.

When pulling on their favorite pair of briefs, American men need to remember that those undies support more than what’s between their legs.

We are going to bring you a series of posts that help you get to know the guys behind the site. We are all underwear lovers and our staff are all volunteers who do it for their love of undies and some great undies. One of our newest is Gabe. He’s a big time underwear lover and this is a little more about him. I hope you enjoy getting some in sight into our guys. Here is more about Gabe!

likeyourself

Making your first foray into the world of high-end men’s underwear is a bit like jumping into a cold pool.  Some dive in head first while others must ease into it gradually.  But regardless of how you enter the pool, it takes a lot more commitment to remain there indefinitely.  To do so is to make a statement about yourself.  On the surface that statement might be ‘I like nice underwear’ but peel back the layers and what is really being said is ‘I like who I am.’

Believe it or not, liking who you are can be an acquired skill.  A lot of people make their way through the world as functional adults without ever fully grasping this concept.  Granted being a responsible adult eventually requires some amount of self-sacrifice.  But surely your needs don’t always need to come last.  It wasn’t until I nearly became a paraplegic that I learned this lesson.

In 2008 I survived a helicopter crash 60 miles off the coast of Brazil.  Of the 20 people on board the helicopter15 survived.  Several days after being plucked from the sea I woke up in a hospital with no memory of the accident and no control of my legs.  The impact had crushed three vertebrae in my lower back.  It was uncertain whether I would walk again.  What followed was a year of intensive physical therapy and a bout with crippling depression.

Prior to the accident my attitude toward myself was pretty neutral; happy in some ways, critical in others.  I thought this was just fine.  After all, I didn’t hate myself.  But ‘not hating’ yourself is still nowhere near to liking yourself.  After all, how far would you go to help someone if the best you can say about them is ‘I don’t hate them’?

During this time my physical shape was unremarkable.  Not horrible, but not great either.  Exercise (I told myself) was something I didn’t have time for.  Numerous times I had pledged to get back in shape.  I would go to the gym and immediately get discouraged by the guy next to me who was curling twice as much.  Goodbye gym.  Same time next year?

That’s just one example, but imagine if all of the small choices you make in the course of a day are governed by an underlying belief feeling that you are slightly inadequate.  Over time, this way of thinking can chip away at your self-esteem and manifest itself in real physical terms (i.e. frequent illness, poor sleep habits, fatigue, depression, etc.)

After the accident I had to relinquish all control to other people.  I needed assistance to do almost everything that a normal person would take for granted.  The adjustment to this new way of life was brutal.  But in my case it was a necessary step in learning to like who I was.

The most significant breakthrough came when I realized that how my thoughts could affect how my body felt.  A gloomy attitude would make the physical therapy sessions unproductive and grueling.  But even a small amount of positive feelings could have the opposite effect.   It turns out that our minds and our bodies are linked in a way that a controls engineer would call a ‘positive feedback loop.’  A small improvement in your mental state can cause a proportionate improvement in your physical state (or vice versa).  Almost like falling upward… positive begets positive.  However, it can go either way.  If you allow the cycle to go negative it will.

A few months in to my recovery a cute 20-something nurse at the clinic passed me in the hall, smiled, and said ‘you look good.’  Because I had been relying entirely on my upper body for mobility I was slowly developing a chest and arms.  That was the moment the scales tipped.  I remember thinking “she’s right, I do look good.” That tiny burst of positive emotional feedback unleashed greater physical exertion in the next round of PT.  And then the negative thoughts that had been impossible to silence began to evaporate.  It’s not because I associate my self-worth with my appearance.  No… I had simply found ONE thing in my life that I COULD control.  Despite the fact that I still couldn’t walk on my own, I was taking way better care of myself (physically and emotionally) than ever before.  I liked who I was.  I was happy.

And this is where I hope my experience can provide a road map to others.  No matter who you are or what your station in life you can always learn to nurture your mind and body.  You deserve to feel good about who you are.  It doesn’t require drastic changes to your lifestyle, but rather a series of small steps carried out over a long period of time.  Just like learning to walk.

Buying yourself nice underwear might seem trivial.  But, as I discovered it only takes the tiniest positive feeling to kick-start the upward spiral.  Who knows how long any of us will be here for.  Why not enjoy your body while you have it.

1010527_583119808378191_1713781659_n-1Joe Snyder over the last year has become one of my favorite brands. This was all because of the Pride Frame line. It just fits me so well. So, when I was at Magic and got to talk to Jose he gave me a heads up on this line. He told me that it was going to have a waistband and a bigger pouch!

I have heard a complaint from people who read the blog that the pouches can sometime run small. This line should hopefully make that easier and fit more guys. I think they did a great job on the pride frame in the pouch department.

This line consists of a Brief, Jockstrap, G String, V Thong, Boxer and Mini Shorty. They are all available in White, Black, Red, Turquoise and the traditional White Sheer and Black Sheer. I am sure if they do well we will see more colors in the line that Joe Snyder is known for, but it’s a great start.

You can find these at retailers now or on the Joe Snyder Website. We think you should definitely check out the new line.

Summer is officially here.  Which means pool parties and trips to the beach.  Fun in the sun for everyone!  We asked the staff at UNB what they are wearing this season.  From board shorts to the skimpiest of speedos, here’s what the guys will be laying out and swimming in.
Diesel Coralrif nylon shortsAlex  – Diesel Caralrif Nylon Swim Shorts – : I normally don’t wear much swimwear in the summer for the beach but really like this pair from Diesel. The vintage cut give enough away while still leaving something to the imagination. They would be perfect for the hanging around with straight  friends and skimpy enough for the gay gatherings too 🙂

Timoteo speedsterJeff – Timoteo Speedster –  He loves the classic, retro style, the sexy, fitted look, and the bright, fun colors.

vuthy swim

UNBLJ – Vuthy Royal Plaid – He  is wearing this hot bikini this summer.  Why?  In his words: It fits my ample butt and makes it look good!

N2N-Stratum-Collection1Tim aka UNBTim – N2N Stratum – .  It’s part of the new N2N collection and fits great! I love the classic N2N pouch built in the pair. It’s not too skimpy but it is a little lower cut in front. It’s been very fun to wear to the pool and after getting back into swim shape I am glad I can wear great and fun swim wear again.

Sauvage Racing BriefUNBAtlBriefs – Sauvage Racing Brief –  He is wearing this hot number this Summer.  It’s actually the same suit I wore last season.  I haven’t found a suit I liked better this season, so I am daring to be be seen in the same suits as last season.  Yes, I said suits.  I have it in four colors!

UNBJon TYR Swim Brief –  I will be mixing it up this summer. Instead of just my Nike and Speedo swim trunks, I have begun to venture into Speedo land. Look for me poolside not only wearing above the knee swim trunks, but also my newly purchased navy and blue TYR swim brief.Speedo solar brief

UNBGabe – Speedo Solar Swim Brief: There’s basically two styles of swimwear I’ll be wearing this summer.  For me it’s either a basic pair of board shorts or Speedo Solar swim brief.  I still swim competitively with a masters team so the Speedo is standard issue year round.  Of course, it has occasional utility if my fiance and I find ourselves someplace with a private jacuzzi and we’ve had too much to drink.  Board shorts on the other hand are pretty functional no matter what the setting, particularly where I live in FL.  They are available from so many manufacturers and in so many styles, it’s not practical to list them all here.  My particular pair is a generic brand from Target.  It dries super-fast, has built-in mesh support, and pockets for the car keys and wallet.

Bonobos swim trunkShane – Classic Swim Trunks  This summer, like all summers before, I will be wearing regular trunks to the pool, beach, river, creek, and puddle that I may happen to fall into.  These are not board shorts.  I do not like board shorts because they are too long.  These trunks are the type that hit above the knee and are not too loose fitting.  I have a couple of pairs of these and my favorite one is a green, blue, white, and black plaid pair.  This style looks good on my body and provides good coverage.  I tend to think of them as classic in styling.

baskit-america

The pair of underwear I am reviewing is the Baskit America Brief in Super White.  Before trying these on, I enjoyed feeling the soft, thick fabric.  This brief is super white with navy blue and gold trim.  The waistband is nave blue with a wide band of gold around the waist and the Baskit logo in white centered on the front above the pouch.  The waistband is approximately 1.5 inches in width and is a bit taut with a small amount of give.  This sturdy waistband makes sure it has no bunching issues while wearing the brief.  The accommodating pouch is rather high placed which provides extra lift and appears to be meant to be very supportive and create that show off look that so many underwear companies are striving to achieve.  The gold color is a really a mixture of gold and mustard and provides a nice contrast to the navy blue and super white.  This brief makes me feel like I should be on a yacht with a captains hat on.  I’m king of the world!  There are several color options in this brief that all feature the gold trim.  This is my fourth or fifth pair of Baskit undies.  I bought a brief when the company first started selling underwear and I enjoy a jock I have from them.  I like Baskit underwear, in general.

While wearing this pair of underwear, I went about my normal daily activities for work.  I administered assessments to a client and sat and stood approximately five hours while wearing this pair of briefs.  The pair fit well, but was a bit tight, did not bunch up, did not ride up, and was comfortable.

I received a size large in this brief.  This size should cover a 34 pant size.  Sizing was not true to size as I am a large in the vast majority of underwear and this pair was a bit tight.  So, the fit was a bit snug in the waist and after washing and air drying the brief, it is a bit smaller that a large but still very wearable.

 am1100_america_brief_s_white am1100_america_brief_b_whiteam1100_america_brief_f_white

I loved the super white fabric with gold trim to accentuate the underwear and body (95%Cotton, 5%Elastane) as it was comfortable and conforming to the body.  The pouch was slight, but supportive and conforming.  I loved the seam that ran the length of the pouch and ended at the crotch.  The seam was sewn with large stitches and created a nice look.  The gold trim that highlighted the pouch was also a particular favorite of mine.

Overall, this was a nice pair of comfortable underwear.  The design is conforming to the body and creates a nice profile.  I will enjoy wearing them again.

Big Boys Pants 3

I found your brand on the Dead Good Undies Site, I don’t think many US readers are familiar with your brand. Can you tell them about you?

Big Boys was born out of frustration around 4-5 years ago because of how disappointing the undies were out there available to us guys.  After years of putting up with sub-standard undies, constantly re-adjusting ourselves and squashing everything into standard compact undies, my brother and I decided to design our own custom-made pants with a stretchy pouch using the ‘Softest fibre in the world’ – Lenzing Modal, in the style that suited us best with a brand name to be proud of.  Everybody wants to be a Big Boy, right?   The freedom and support the pouch offered us was amazing and the Modal lived up to it’s reputation as being unbelievably soft making our new undies so comfortable and sexy.  We absolutely loved our new pants and decided to share some extra samples with friends who instantly became Big Boys fans too.  It was time for Big Boys to go global.  We have passion in our pants and it’s great to see we’re not alone.  Through the support and encouragement of retailers such as Dead Good Undies we have been able to increase awareness of our brand and underwear collections around the world which has been great.  Sadly the US market is a tough nut to crack with many US retailers content in stocking the same tired old brands.  From the increasing sales and comments we get from US customers it’s clear than you guys are more than ready for something different and you want more than just cheaply made cotton undies made by boring generic brands charging over-inflated prices.  We continue to produce pants primarily for ourselves and our customers rather than for a quick buck so even though we use expensive top quality Lenzing Modal, our retail prices remain lower than our competitors who use inferior fabrics.   Our fabric is 10 TIMES softer than cotton, retains it’s shape and colour better than cotton, and is stronger and more durable than cotton.  We think the extra cost to us is well worth it to have a pair of pants that we are proud to call ours.

You make ergonomically designed underwear, what sets you apart from other brands?

There are many brands to choose from out there, and a few which offer a similar pouch design. However most brands use a cotton/elastane mix which is cheap to produce and loses shape and colour far too easily, and with customers regularly being charged $15-$30 for these brands we feel they deserve more for their hard-earned money, especially in the current economic climate.  We use the Worlds Softest Fibre throughout our underwear collections which is sourced directly from the original innovators and manufacturers of Modal – Lenzing of Austria.  There are a few that have taken the leap to using modal instead of cotton, but again they’ve chosen to use a cheaper generic modal rather than source the top quality Modal directly from Lenzing as we do which is silky-soft, extremely lightweight and very stretchy giving you the ultimate sensual second-skin fit.  The ergonomic, anatomical design lets everything hang naturally in luxurious comfort for improved support and a more sculptured appearance more suited to a man’s shape.  Many customers have said it’s like being naked, having that liberating freedom but with a reassuring hug of support.  The breathable fabric also contains absorbent qualities for a cooler experience which can also aid fertility.  We have also had reports that it has transformed the lives of men suffering with psoriasis and other skin conditions due to the cooler modal fabric allowing the groin area to breathe and remain drier; reducing friction and chafing and so becoming flake-free for the first time in years.

Of course there’s also the brand name that people love.  Some guys buy pants purely based on the designer’s name which from a personal point of view I would much rather show off my BIG BOYS waistband than have some vague, meaningless brand or some other guy’s name across my waist.  Brands/Labels are becoming increasingly important to guys wanting to impress their friends or to attract other girls/guys so whether it’s in a bar, locker room or bedroom the Big Boys label always commands respect.

Do you have a specific audience you are after or all men in general?

All men wear undies so we have no specific audience, every guy can be a Big Boy.  We’ve found that the 18-35 year old guys are probably more adventurous but we receive orders from all ages, shapes and sizes and the comments we receive are great from all kinds of guys throughout the world.  Even my 13-year nephew wears his Big Boys with pride and his school friends and football team have been converted to the comfort of Lenzing Modal.  He’s quickly becoming our top little salesman from his team mates .  By using the stretchy modal fabric it allows us to offer a ‘One Size Fits Most’ pouch design so whether you’re a compact guy, regular guy or larger guy the pouch will support your twig n’ berries in smooth, soft, luxurious comfort.  Why squash your bits n’ pieces into pouch-less unisex style pants that could as easily fit a female figure?  Men are anatomically different and need extra room, comfort and support.  Let’s face it, it’s on our minds most of the time so lets treat it to a bit of luxury hey.   As I said, we initially made undies for ourselves so it’s great to find that so many others have been searching for the same thing for years.  It’s nice to know we’re designing undies that other people want too and we hope to continue giving the public what they want.

With the amazing fit have you thought of doing swimwear?

We have a lot of ideas and samples in the pipeline which do include swimwear.  We want to get the designs right and so far thankfully the feedback we’ve received from our focus groups have been encouraging.  We have to get the balance right between staying true to our brand and also be conscious that our swimwear will be displayed on public beaches and communal swimming pools with families so a more subtle design than our underwear collections has been adopted.  They still look great though and the various styles should be available for Spring/Summer 2014.

What trends are you seeing in men’s underwear?

Men are becoming increasingly aware of their appearance and spending more time on their looks, physique, and fashion.  The days of boring passion-killing Y-fronts are long gone, and guys are now far more adventurous and more conscious of male grooming.  Having said that, there are some guys who are still unsure of the pouch design but based on the positive feedback we receive from customers and reviewers, and the amount of returning customers it’s clear that guys are embracing change and once they’ve tried the pouch-design undies and experienced the freedom, comfort and support they just don’t want to go back to standard undies.

What is in store for Big Boys Underwear in the next year?

We have lots of ideas and designs for later this year and next year which have yet to be finalised but it’s an exciting time ahead.  I don’t want to give away too much as they are still in the development stage but we have designs for a new alternative collection to our current Next Generation collection and also developing our brand in other avenues.  I’d like to offer all your readers a chance to get their hands on some Big Boys with a special 15% discount by quoting TIM as the discount code on our web site as a thank you, I know you’re a big fan Tim and we really appreciate your support.  If your readers can actively encourage some US retailers to try something new and stock Big Boys in their stores instead of the usual cotton clones, it would result in cheaper shipping costs and faster delivery times for US customers, although it’s still pretty fast from the UK thankfully.  I think guys in the US are more than ready for something new so maybe people power can make this happen.

We’re keen to develop our brand and improve our products so we always welcome suggestions and comments from our customers and hopefully the Underwear News Briefs readers would also like to comment on how we can improve our products.  Keep checking our web site (www.BigBoysPants.com) or follow us on Facebook (www.facebook.com/bigboysunderwear) and Twitter (@BigBoysUndies) for regular product updates and special offers.

Thanks again Tim, keep up the good work my friend.

We would like to thank Andy for taking the time to answer our questions. Make sure you got check it out. I also know a few of you may notice the different spellings. Since the big boys are in the UK they have some different spellings

I have seen your profiles on Today Show and Good Morning American and your story is truly inspiring.  You have over come a lot in the last few years, what was the biggest help in cover coming the challenges you had the last few years?

Hey whatsup sir how are you doing thank you for having me on your blog today.  To be honest with you I really wasn’t doing anything except running away from all my problems with my alcohol. That is until almost 10 months ago. Things happened in my life, things got put in front of me that prohibited me from drinking. Been sober ever since. Now I love my life wouldn’t change a thing about it 🙂

Our motto here is “real guys, real underwear”, we posted one of your pictures from Tom Cullis on our Facebook page _MG_1027and the response was overwhelmingly positive. You look amazing, and aren’t the typical underwear model. What made you go into fitness/underwear modeling?

Ha! Wasn’t my idea! Tom Cullis and I go to the same gym. We where there one day at the same time, and when he saw me he said to me “You look HOTT! Have you ever modeled?”

I got in front of a camera for the first time ever with him. He said I was a natural. I said “No, I’m just being me man”. That’s all I have ever been. That’s all I ever want to be. Just me.

What response have you seen about your pictures that have recently been seen all over the net?

I’ve received multiple different responses from people. I’ve gotten some people who appreciate how I look.  And then others who are inspired, who are trying to better themselves daily, like I am

With all the recent visibility and publicity what has been the best thing that has happened to you?

I think I have reached, been given the opportunity to reach, more people than I EVER thought possible. For that, I am so very grateful

You look amazing in your pictures, what type of work out do you do?

A lot of High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) workouts, then a lot of cardio, then a healthy balanced diet. A normal sleep schedule helps more than you might want to give it credit ha

What are your plans for the future? Are there any brands you would like to model for?

Be happy,  stay healthy, and find balance in life. Those are my life’s goals

I never thought I would ever be doing all this, so its not like growing up I had big dreams of different underwear I could wear in magazines haha 😉 That being said, I would LOVE to work for Nike. That is one of my biggest goals currently

Thank you very much for having me on your blog sir!

ppu-1319-review

I was really excited to review the PPU 1319 Boxers I got as soon as I got them in the mail. I’m not usually one for mesh, but I was excited to try them out and see what I thought. When I signed on to write for UNB, I told myself that I would try new things, and I saw this as the perfect opportunity. I wasn’t disappointed. I’m usually not thrilled by white, but the sexy style intrigued me right away. I haven’t tried any other PPU styles before, but had heard really good things. This style is also available in black with a black waistband.

My day for this review was a little more active than usual. I started with an hour bus ride to work, a full day of work, an hour bus ride home, a bunch of errands all around town and an evening run. I think the fact that they held up so well for this active of day then they would hold up normally. I don’t think these would work well for a lounging around day, mostly because there is so little to them.

I got a size medium, which is generally a size up than I normally take, but it ended up working out great for me. PPU says that this size is for people with waists between 32 and 24 inches. The pair are true to size and the sizing is based on American standards.

Overall, I really liked the feel of this pair. It felt like I was wearing nothing, but not in an uncomfortable, I’m-going-commando-right-now way. They were so soft, which is pretty much the exact opposite of what I was expecting. I’d say the look was average. I really like the portions that are mesh, but don’t really like the parts that are “solid.” If it was up to me, I would have changed the solid portions so that they were actually solid and didn’t have such weird patterns. I thought they were cheesy.

1319(1)1319(2)1319(4) 1319(3)

So the verdict is in. I made it through my first mesh review pair, I am alive and I’m actually happy with what I ended up with. If you are afraid of trying something that might be a sexier than you would usually go for, DO IT. You might (and probably will be) pleasantly surprised. To sum up:

Pros:

  • The fit was fabulous. Keep in mind that I got a size larger than I normally take, but I think if you stick with your regular size you should be good.
  • Though the look is “sexy,” the material is super soft, and comfortable for your average day at work.
  • I love the red trim and waistband against the white. Looks great!

Cons:

  • The pattern on the solid parts of the pair isn’t the best

And here are my ratings:

  • Daily Fit — 8
  • Sizing — 8
  • Construction/Materials — 10
  • Styling — 7
  • Daily Performance — 9
  • Overall — 8.4
