UNB BlueSkiesfrontHave you heard of Blue Collar Underwear? Chances are you haven’t heard of this brand. I think it’s definitely a brand you should know! They were “started to revolutionize the way you feel about your underwear and the way your underwear feel and look on you. Our goal with every pair of underwear is to bring functionality, fit, feel, comfort, quality and affordability back to the underwear industry. And we’re doing so without sacrificing style.” They go on to say don’t let the “Blue Collar” name fool you, they have made their underwear for everyone.

I have been talking back and forth with them for a while. We have profiled them on UNB a few times and they wanted me to review some of their undies. The first pair I received was the Blue Skies City Brief. I will be the first to say that Trunks for me can go either good or really bad. BUT, I’m kept and open mind because I never know when I’ll be surprised.

The first thing I noticed was the fabric was a mesh fabric which I kind of liked. When taken out of the package, it worried me that they maybe a little small. But after sliding them on those fears were dispelled (more on sizing below). These were kinda stretchy and really felt amazing. I will say I’m surprised how well they fit and felt. Remember you have to step outside your underwear box sometimes!

Let’s look at the comfort of the pair. The first thing I noticed was the fly. It does have a functional fly and had a white panel on the right side that thought added to the design. The fabric felt great. Honestly, I was surprised how well it conformed to my body. When I felt it out of the package it didn’t seem super stretchy. This was a pleasant surprise to me! I gave these a big challenge going to watch a sporting event in the sun of the south. If these were to not handle the hot day, I would be very disappointed.

The pouch is one thing I loved. Long time readers know that I love a great pouch. Being on the bigger side it is important. The initial reaction was the pouch may not be stretch or be comfy. Sometimes in trunks, the pouches can loose their shape. This one did amazing. I was really impressed and it’s one of those pairs that makes me enjoy trunks.

The size I reviewed was an XL. The XL fits guys 36-39. I am 6’4” and 245 ish ( on a good day) my current waist size is 38. The pair fit pretty well. I am on the upper end of the scale. It didn’t bind or feel too small. I was happy with the sizing. These days more and more companies are doing their own sizing so it’s super important to pay attention to the sizing charts (Which we will have all updated on our site soon). Never assume you’re a certain size, ALWAYS look at the size charts.

Pros:

  • Fabric felt amazing
  • Great pouch that was supportive

Cons:

  • Some may not like the functional Fly
  • Only in Darker colors (love to see this in some bright colors)

  • Daily Fit – 9.5

Alexander_COBB_gym_logoFor those who are not familiar yet, Alexander COBB® is a Danish brand of men’s underwear.  Starting from spring 2013, Alexander COBB® becomes a synonym for originality, comfort and quality.

The Alexander Cobb (AC) men’s underwear range includes briefs, boxers, and boxer shorts, and comes in 4 sizes (S, M, L, XL).  Each pair is made with designer quality elastic band, 92 percent cotton, and 8 percent lycra.

2WINK GRAFFITI XTRE#11901D6It’s Australian day here at UNB! We have covered 2wink a few times on the blog. One of the more memorable pairs was the H2O swim brief last year that has a white panel in the front that is see through when wet! Its not for the shy guy! Now they have released the new Graffiti Xtreme Swim Brief.

This year there is a big trend in patterns in swimwear. There have been some wild prints and some really fun ones. Graffiti is especially big. The best thing about this trend to me, is that it can be so different between the brands. Some trends can have pairs look a like. I’m sure we have all seen them.

2wink has made the Graffiti Xtreme out of Italian nylon and has a really fun print. The print has skulls and bright colors mixed in. It would be a great pair for our Swim Brief Challenge. Also it would be a great conversation starter on the beach/pool. 2wink is one of those brands you don’t see a lot up here in the States so it would set you apart from you friends. So if you want something very few people would have, this pair is it!

It is available from the the 2wink site for $49.95 USD. So see it and some of the other great swim they have created including the H2O

LFHR_UNDaB13017_blue_briefaussieBum is on a roll lately! They have been releasing so many awesome pairs of underwear lately! The newest range is the Spot. The Spot is: “This fun, cheeky design from aussieBum is available with bold waistbands and stitching detail in primary colour options of red, blue and yellow. Made from a high quality cotton lycra material for a complimentary fitted look. Spot on for the stylish man!”

I admit I think underwear should be fun or why should we wear it? If you’re reading this blog, you have a similar point of view on underwear. The reason I like this so much is the fun whimsical dot pattern. It’s not exactly a polka dot. The dots are bigger and more spread out. There is just something about this pair that makes me smile.

The styles available are the brief and hipsters. They are available in 3 different colors. But you should note the colors are just the waistband, which are blue, red and yellow. So if you’re looking for some bright colors this pair won’t have them! But, if you’re a fan of waistband, like I am, this could be a great pair.

You can get these pairs from aussieBum for $15.30 for the brief and $16.99 for the trunk. These prices are super reasonable and with the free world wide shipping why not get a pair or two?

Garcon-Model_Flash-Your-Waistband

With 90s fashion trends making a return the look-at-me logo is back with a vengeance and that includes underwear! From the streets of South Beach to the nightclubs of Ibiza guys want an underwear waistband that commands attention.

This new wave of Logo Mania has seen demand for Garçon Model’s underwear, with its iconic metallic GM waistband, increase by 40% compared with the first quarter of 2013 and sales are set to soar ahead of festival season.

Our signature GM waistband has been hugely popular with guys that want to flash a new and exciting brand under their t-shirts! There was a demand for branded premium underwear and guys are really embracing that. The stereotype that guys don’t care about their underwear is certainly becoming a thing of the past.” – Mehdi Mebarki, Co-Founder of Garçon Model.

Whilst research has found that men are happy to settle for basic briefs during the winter months, come the sunny days of Spring its out with the basic and in with the bold.

With a trend started by Calvin Klein back in the 1990s, and recently re-launched with a social media campaign, statement logo waistbands are the easiest way for customers to show their brand loyalty.

For Spring/Summer 2014 Garçon Model offers bold logo waistbands in 11 fresh color combinations from elegant black and silver to audacious pink and yellow.

The Garçon Model ‘Miami’ collection of luxurious microfibre briefs, trunks and boxers are available from $28.

timoteo-olympian-super-lowThis year Patriotic (Flag) swimwear is HUGE. So many brands have come out with different pairs. The trend has gone world wide including flags from Brazil, Australia, UK and more. The bulk of the trend is the US flag. Timoteo has put his own unique spin on flag motif. It’s not a literal interpretation but a more abstract view!

Timoteo has a very unique style that has set him apart since he came on the underwear scene. He’s not afraid to design super fun underwear/swimwear. While not known for swim specifically, he has made some really incredible swimwear over the years. I think after the last two seasons more and more guys will be wearing Timoteo Swim. He keeps getting better and better! So there is no better time than now to try it!

I think this pair is going to go down as one of his more memorable pairs! It has a very clean look. The front is solid white with two red stripes on each side. From the front you wouldn’t know what has a blue background with white stars. The style is the Super Low swim brief they currently produce.

To me it has a very Olympic feel to me. I just think of the summer games! I think this is because in the 80’s and 90’s they would release patriotic/flag inspired swim briefs to coincide with the games. They were always something like this. Imagine if we had our Olympians in Timoteo swim briefs!

Timoteo has out done it with this pair. One thing you should know is this is a limited edition pair. So if you’re interested in getting it, get it sooner than later because it maybe gone. It currently is $40 on the Timoteo site.

We had a really amazing shoot this year. First off I want to thank our Sponsors, Clever Moda Masculine Underwear, Vuthy Sim Swimwear, Bwet Swimwear, N2N Bodywear, 2EROS and Manus Swimwear. We had a great day to shoot swimwear. Unlike previous years when we had rain and clouds. Our Photographer Ignacio Rivera Jr. out did himself with these pics.

Our three models were Matt, Derek and Martin. You have seen all of them before. Matt has been in two other shoots (Swimwear 2013 and Holiday 2013), Derek (July 2013 Baskit Shoot) and Martin (Holiday 2013) each have been in one other shoot. We def want to work with all of them again soon!

Where to buy:

sly-hyper-plaid-boxersThe pair I am reviewing is the Sly Hyper Plaid boxer briefs. When I first saw this pair I was in love. The plaid coloring on these pair is cute and appeals to me. I will say I am a true Portland guy who loves anything and everything plaid! The packaging was really unique as well, it came wrapped in a pouch that reminds me of thick parchment paper. The underwear wasn’t as soft as I expected when I first pulled them out, but they are soft when you put them on.

I decided to really test this pair out by wearing them on a day I had to work both of my jobs for a 13 hour work day. I also had them on for well over 24 hours since I started working at 1 am and then didn’t change clothes until the next day. One of my jobs was doing shipment at Express, which is in the back room where it is hot from the steamer, and requires a lot of standing and sitting and moving around. The package this pair came in called them “Work Hard” meaning they are designed for the working part of your day to keep you comfortable. I have to agree with the company’s description. After wearing this pair for all day the elastic around the leg holes stayed tight and never stretched out. The pair was also comfortable and didn’t move all day long. At times I even forgot I was wearing them because they were so comfortable.

The pair is a size small which covers a 30 to 32 inch waist. The pair fit me really well even though I am around a 28 inch waist. I think the bubble butt helped to make the pair feel tighter even though my waist is smaller than what their sizing says. The pouch isn’t huge but it fit me just right. At times I actually felt like I had more room than I needed in the pouch.

I really like this pair of boxer briefs. The design is fun and bright and colorful. I am going to be wearing this pair more often. They were comfortable and held up to all the movements of my day. It isn’t often that when you have a bubble butt you aren’t readjusting your underwear throughout the day.

Pros:

  • Held up throughout the movements of my day
  • Fun color and pattern
  • Comfortable on the body

Cons: (if I was to have to choose one)

  • The pouch was more roomy than I am use too

Ratings:

  • Daily Fit – 10
  • Sizing – 10
  • Construction/Material – 10
  • Styling – 10
  • Daily Performance – 10

I loved these and would love to get more pairs from Sly! Sly Collective furnished these for review.

READ ME - GIF 1aussieBum is back at it! This time they are living up to their slogan, “if you doubt yourself…wear something else.” The newest range is the Read between the lines. Which is exactly what you do on the waist band!

They write: aussieBum introduces ‘Read Me’, a fun cheeky product with a conversation starter waistband and first ever side split design. Constructed using soft micro modal fabric for optimum movement and comfort. The soft material and relaxed fit make it the underwear choice for the confident man.

I believe that this pairs waistband is one that must be shown. It would be a big shame to hide it! But, you would want to do it in the right situation. That maybe a night out, on a date or around good friends. I wouldn’t suggest this one to be shown at work.

Next, I’m so happy to see more companies using modal. It has become my favorite fabric for underwear. Not only is it super soft but its great at making you stay cool through out the day.

Lastly, it’s available in a brief and trunk. The colors are red, white and blue with the Read Between the Lines waistband. The brief is around $25 and boxer is about $29. Find these and more at the aussieBum site.

interview-IV-neotrunkFor a second there, I thought I was dreaming. How can it be that since my start at UNB I have not only met some amazing underwear enthusiasts, but now I’m receiving pairs for reviews! It is kind of like dying and going to heaven, except not as dramatic.

I digress. For the duration of this review I will be covering the Interview IV Neotrunk from Interview Brand Underwear. When Tim sent out the list of pairs the team would be reviewing, I was a little surprised: Interview was not a brand previously known to me, something that doesn’t happen too terribly often. However, it only took a Google search for me to get really, really excited.Based in Los Angeles (woo!) Interview features a wide selection of underwear styles from trunks to jockstraps, many of which come in fun and attractive colors. Mine were no exception; the Neotrunk pair I received was a royal blue color with yellow around the thigh and white around the waistband. The colors were amazing right out of the packaging, and I appreciated the contrast. To the touch the nylon feels amazing; almost like silk…all of these things I noticed and appreciated before I had even put them on!

For reviews, I really try to put a pair through the ringer; and choose to wear them on days when I know I will be doing the most of everything. This pair was spared no grief and went through a whole day of work at school as well as night celebrations with my friends and boyfriend. Overall, the pair was a great success. I mentioned before the vibrancy of the colors: these held up when I put them on and I discovered that I quite like the look of blue around my butt-I don’t have many pairs in any color close to it so I enjoyed that newness. The yellow thighbands and white waistband help give this pair an edgy sporty look, and would make it appropriate for date night or another day at the office.

Tim sent me a large and I think this was a good choice. Since they weren’t too small, I got to avoid a lot of the “riding up” that would have occurred if I had gone with a medium, and it meant my thighs didn’t appear to have muffin tops of their own from being too restricted. The 90% nylon make up of this pair also meant that I had plenty of ventilation breathing room as I went throughout my day; keeping in mind again that I am constantly running around being chased by children. I was especially appreciative of this considering the absolute heat wave Los Angeles experience the week I received the pair; I hardly sweat at all and the pair didn’t feel like I was wearing another layer of clothes that trapped heat.

One quick note before I wrap this up: it is very common for underwear (especially trunks) to come with a seam down the middle of the pouch like they do in this pair from Interview. What I’ve noticed is that this pouch caters to a specific type of man, the man who tucks his junk forwards, away from his body. This seam, while also providing support, enhances the look of a mans pouch and make it look more pronounced. That being said, what about those of us who tuck our junk towards our body?

Often times I find that this seam leaves us with a little bit of an unsightly pucker because the pouch isn’t filled out like it was meant to. While this is really just a prefrancing issue, I could see why someone would be frustrated by the way this looks (or what it would look like to someone else) and on a personal level, I try to avoid this style. I can’t level this as a negative aspect of this pair and this pair alone, as I mentioned this is common in hundreds of styles and brands. But it is something I noticed while wearing this pair; not that it changed my overall opinion of it in the slightest.

Overall, the Neotrunk from Interview is a great, versatile pair of underwear that would function well at work, the gym or at play. Priced at a cool $21.00 this trunk also comes in at a pretty reasonable price and would be a great choice for anyone looking for a solid pair of undies. So in summary:

Pros:

  • Great colors give it an athletic but fun look
  • True to size
  • Material is super lightweight and airy

Cons:

  • Nylon feels like it could rip very easily

Ratings:

  • Daily Fit: 8
  • Sizing: 8
  • Construction/Materials: 7
  • Styling            : 7
  • Overall: 7.5
