It’s time for SWIMWEAR SUNDAY! This is our segment where we profile swimwear to help you guys take on the UNB 2016 Swim Brief Challenge. We profile from classic cuts to more risque cuts. We have a really cool pair today from CA-RIO-CA, but more on that in a sec.

If you’re gay you probably know all about this, if you’re straight this may be your first time hearing it. Being in the south one of the big things that happen is Memorial Day in Pensacola. It’s been going on for years. In my younger days, it was tons of guys in swim briefs as far as the eye could see. Over the years guys have moved away from the brief and worn trunks and shorts. However, many are moving back to the brief. I never personally went (well one time but it was Memorial Day after a hurricane hit and nothing was built up yet).

This leads us to the pair for today. CA-RIO-CA is making a limited edition Pensacola print in their traditional sunga and brief. If you are unfamiliar with a sunga. It’s the traditional swimwear guys wear on the beaches in brazil. It’s cut a bit bigger and doesn’t have a “designed” pouch. Rather the fabric creates it’s own pouch. A sunga would be great for a guy just ditching the shorts and wanting to venture into the world of swim briefs.

This pair is specifically designed for Pensacola Memorial day weekend. It has a really cool American flag design with Pensacola written on the back. Making it the perfect pair for Memorial day. The one thing I like it’s not a literal interpretation of the flag. It’s a new take and it’s just fun. This reminds me of a pair I had years ago that were flag inspired. I rocked the hell out of them on the beach. I would do the same with these.

I really have to say CA-RIO-CA did an amazing job on this pair. Even if you’re not going to Pensacola you can pick one of these up. But this is a pair I had to profile that is going to be one of my favorites of the season. Note, this suit is available May 1st.

JOR Sunny Swim Thong 0427Last year we introduced you to two swim thongs from JOR. They were the Ipanema swim thong (0354) and the Sport swim thong (0355). This year JOR is introducing the sister to their Sunny swim bikini brief they released last year. The Sunny Swim Thong is the newest swim thong in their line up. It’s great to see JOR introducing more swim thongs to their line. We’ve been seeing brands start dipping their toes into the men’s swim thong market.

JOR’s Sunny swim thong is available in 6 color options. You have the choice from three solid colors and three prints. Your solid options are black, fuchsia, and white. Your first print option they call it gray, which also contains white, red, and black. The pattern sort of resembles horizontal fish scales, but not uniform sizes. The next pattern is called pink. The pattern reminds me of Native American ones. The main color of this one is actually white, with the pattern on it in pink, orange, light blue, purple, and black. Your last pattern choice is called yellow. This one’s base color is yellow and has a bunch of interlocking white rings outlined in black.

JOR calls the fabric microfiber and is quick drying and resilient. The fabric is a blend of 84% nylon and 16% spandex. The swim thong is made in Colombia with USA and Colombian fabrics. They are available in sizes small to extra large. The JOR logo and name is on a small tag located on the left hip of the thong.

Don’t forget about the UNB Swim Brief Challenge, which includes thong swimsuits. Maybe this thong would be a good option for the challenge. Why not take the JOR Sunny swim thong with you on your next beach or pool trip and get some sun on your buns.

Fellas, for the love of all that is good, ditch the board shorts! Please? They look ridiculous. I mean, it looks like you’re wearing a parachute around your waist. Picture this, you’re getting some sexy-time with your lady. The lights are turned down or off, maybe you have a few candles lit. Some nice sexy-time music playing in the background. You go to take your pants off and BAM! Your lady is blinded by your color deficient legs and ghostly white bum cheeks. All she can see is this beaming phosphorescence that is your board shorts tan and she’s no longer in the mood.

Come on man, be honest. You know you’ve looked in the mirror after a nice long summer and marveled at the contrast in color on your legs. I mean they are straight up two very different colors. You know it looks bad but that’s just how it is, right? Hey guy pulling up your board shorts as far as you can to get some color on your legs, I see you. I mean maybe you can get some shorter shorts so maybe your tan can extend to a few inches above your knee. Yawn.

I kid (kinda). I’m not about shaming and some guys look great in board shorts. Usually taller guys, but I digress. I was just trying to make a point, that in case I’m right, that you have noticed that board short tan. And not liked what you saw or not liked the load that board shorts are, then you have options.

Look, our European brethren know what’s up when it comes to swimwear. They wear briefs (Speedos in American lingo even though Speedos is a brand) mostly and some even dare to bare more. Granted, they still get a tanline but it is a marked improvement from the train wreck that is a board short tanline. The entire leg being nice and bronzed like the rest of you is far more aesthetically pleasing. Then those tanned legs getting chopped in half by those super dope surf brand parachutes you wore all summer.

Allow me to drop some knowledge unto you about some options that you have for this summer’s swim attire. You can choose between a variety of different cuts: trunks, briefs, bikinis and thongs. Trunks have the most coverage of these options. They’re basically short shorts. The next option and slightly more revealing are the briefs. These are not like your childhood tighty-whities. There are some really great designs out there and some super sexy cuts. Most of them have full cheek coverage and a three-plus inch waistband. One more level of freedom and we’re at the bikini cut. The waistbands tend to be pretty skinny, one inch or less and the back coverage may be slightly less as well. Sometimes referred to as a three-quarter back or european cut. For the least amount of coverage and the most amount of awesomeness we have the thong cut. I believe the back coverage needs no introduction but let me address the pouch and comfort level. Men’s swimwear, that aren’t parachutes, are fitted. They are made for men with man parts. Like varying amounts of coverage in the rear, pouches vary as well. Most are fitted so that the gents fit into a comfortable pouch and are fully supported and covered. Some pouches even provide a bit of lift or bulge. Now let me blow your mind, thongs are not uncomfortable! They do not feel like a perma-wedgie. The feeling of the backstrap simply goes away after a while. All that’s left are the feelings of freedom and confidence.

I realize it’s hard to buck societal norms. Especially if you’re young and you are still subject to peer pressure. Let me just speak from personal experience here: I wore a bikini brief cut suit to the beach the other day and noticed that I was the only guy on the beach not in shorts. It was an insane realization. To be honest I didn’t mind that much. My wife hates board shorts and the unfortunate tan that comes with them and frankly, I don’t like the shorts tan either. My desire to look sexy to my wife and to have a nice tan was greater than any fear of what people might think of me.

Speaking of what people might think… what might people think? That I’m from Europe? That I’m a weirdo? That I shouldn’t be wearing those bikini briefs because I don’t have a six-pack? That I’m gay?

Who. Cares. You know what they say about people and their opinions.

If people thought I was from Europe. Cool. Fine. Whatever. If they thought I was a weirdo… well, I am so they’re right. We’re all a little weird and if you’re zero percent weird… that’s just weird man. I shouldn’t be wearing bikini briefs because I don’t have a six-pack… First of all, most of us don’t have six-packs. So the majority of us should still be allowed to feel sexy and good in our bodies. Second of all I’d be more worried about a good gust of wind that those parachutes might catch. And frankly, I don’t give a damn if people think I’m gay because of the swimwear I choose to wear. First, being gay isn’t a bad thing so I don’t find that insulting. Secondly, how ridiculous that a swimsuit is giving you some indication of my sexual identity! Swimwear and sexual identity are about as related as oil and water in reality. Though a good argument can be made for that relationship as it pertains to our culture.

Let’s briefly chat about confidence and body positivity. Confidence is dead sexy as any woman will tell you. More personal reflection for you: I, like probably a lot of you, have body image issues. I have a spare tire around my waist that I liken to a monster truck tire. Some gyno in my chest and my body weight fluctuates like the stock market. But during those periods of time when I’ve really got my diet dialed in and I’ve been killing it in the gym. I make sure I enjoy the fruits of my labor by not hating what I see in the mirror. It’s not perfect but I’ve worked damn hard for what it is. Once I ease up on myself it’s much easier to go out and enjoy wearing some sexy swimwear and a great tan followed up by a wife ready for some action.

Side note: I don’t want to put out the impression that eating healthy and working out are primarily for aesthetic results. Those things promote a healthy lifestyle so you can feel good as well as look good.

Don’t wait until you’re 60 to decide you just don’t give a hootenanny about what people think. Because that seems to be about how long it takes for our give-a-shitters to be completely non-operational. Thus allowing us to do the things we’ve been wanting to do for all those years. Hey, props to the… more mature gentlemen out there rocking it and demonstrating a lesson in confidence. The more of us men that get out there wearing what would really rather be wearing the more normal it will be.

I love 2EROS because they do matching swimwear like the V10 & S50 Desert Camo. They are the same print but in two different designs. As much as we want every guy to wear a swim brief, some can’t or won’t wear them. For those who can’t we hope you wear something just as stylish.

Here is what 2EROS says about the new Desert Camo:

This military-inspired print has seen a resurgence! This season 2EROS have moved away from traditional combinations and have experimented with lots of bright and bold colour variations. Adding that layer of fun and spontaneity to a classic print. The S50 and V10 boast a daring low-rise fit to accentuate your every asset. They are also form fitted, super lightweight and quick dry.

The V10 Desert Camo features:

  • V10 Fit – a low cut brief cut
  • Quick Dry – perfect for a day at the beach or pool
  • External drawstrings – with the classic 2EROS aglets
  • Front cup mesh lining – Lined so you won’t show off everything!
  • Material: 82% Nylon / 18% Elastane

The S50 Desert Camo features:

  • S50 Fit – a daring low-rise fit to accentuate your every asset
  • Quick Dry – perfect for a day at the beach or pool
  • External drawstrings – with the classic 2EROS aglets
  • Mesh lining – Give you some extra support
  • Material: 100% Polyester

Both of these pairs are perfect for summer! The print is one of my favorites of the year. The blue camo with the orange just pops! You will be the hit of the beach in these! And get more than one pair for the summer!

Marcuse sent us some amazing pictures of their new collection. They gave us a bit of info about the collection:

‘The idea of this season is fun, dramatic and bold with a hint of the 60’s. They are reminiscent of the polka dot brief and Andy Warhol’s artwork. We invited photographer Pavel Lepikhin @pavel_lepikhin to shoot our favorite model Anatoly Goncharov @tollgoncharov ”

We here at UNB have been pushing the Swim Brief Challenge every summer. The Challenge is to wear a swim brief in public. This will hopefully break the same US people have over swim briefs. Currently, it’s looked down upon on a guy wearing one on the beach. You still have to wear the dork shorts aka board shorts or swim shorts.

Each year we get more and more guys on the swim brief train. Well, wanting to wear them to the beach. More straight guys have been on this train that I would have ever thought. UNB is getting guys to think about their swim choices. I know it’s a long process to change social norms but we are working on it.

Guys Want to Wear Thongs

Over the last two years there have been more and more companies producing swim thongs. It started about 3 years ago with Vuthy making swim thongs in his collection. Other companies also made them such as Cocksox and, I believe, BodyAware. Flash forward to this year and JOR has quite a few of them in the collection. This got me thinking should we have a Swim Thong Challenge?

6.jpg

In our recent survey on thongs, 40% of respondents wanted to wear a swim thong. While around 35% of them have worn them currently. The surprising number was those who have already worn them in public, 17% of guys have! It appears that the swim thong market for men is on the rise!

This is a trend that is on the rise. It’s going to be a subcategory in swimwear, just as swim briefs have been for years. Will swim thongs go mainstream? I don’t think so but I have been pleasantly surprised before.

Challenges of Swim Thongs over Swim Briefs

Some guys find swim briefs scary enough to wear on the beach. Many have said they feel totally exposed and on display the first time they wear them. While you are covered (with most swim briefs), with a thong you are really on display. The only thing covered are your goods. Your assets are out for everyone to see.

Having your assets out can cause trouble. Our friends at Cockpit Undies know all about the laws about swim thongs. Just because it’s legal doesn’t mean you won’t get harassed by local law enforcement if people complain. Which is just a hassle that most guys don’t want. It’s best to do research before venturing out in a thong. The best advice I was given by a thong lover is go to a nude beach and wear it. There you will have no issues about what you wear.

One other issue is finding a swim thong. Most companies don’t make them. Yes, the market is growing but I don’t think we will ever see a swim thong from 2(X)IST or more main stream brands. It will be from smaller to medium brands.

Lastly, if you get called “gay” when wearing a swim brief, wearing a thong will get even more “gay” slurs from people. This is the main thing we are trying to change in general in swimwear and underwear. The person who wears the item is gay not the garment. Sorry, I won’t get off on this tanget. This is an entire post in itself.

Where Can You Buy/Who Makes Thongs

This is not a comprehensive list but some of the ones we know that currently make them! If you know any more send us a message or comment below with who makes them.

  • Cocksox – Has made them for as long as I can remember. They continue to update their line thongs with new colors and prints.
  • JOR – JOR is a company that recently started making them. They have put their own spin on the swim thong and look pretty nice.
  • Cockpit Undies – One of the biggest supports on the Swim Thong market. He believes every guy regardless of body size should wear them. He makes a few in each print so you can get an almost one of a kind suit.
  • M-Wear – One of the newest brands making custom thongs. Matthew is just starting and growing. But he makes incredible gear.
  • SkinzWear – Looking for something skimpy and some great prints? Skizwear has been around since 1986 and been making all kinds of swimwear.

We want to empower and encourage guys to wear what they want. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t wear soemthing. Speaking as a beefy guy, I plan on wearing a swim thong at some point this summer. When you wear a swim brief or thong let us know! We’ll be posting graphics to share on social media when you do the challenge.

Swimwear Sunday is back! If you are new to UNB, we run Swimwear Sunday through out the summer. Most of the posts will feature swim briefs, but we will profile all kinds of styles. It’s fun to have just a section for swimwear.

A new pair just released by 2EROS is the Sunset swim brief. 2EROS used a really great sunset print for this swimwear. 2EROS has always had a keen eye to find the most amazing prints for swimwear. Over the years they have tried many different prints. It’s become a signature of the brand now.

2EROS says this about the pair:

The V10 fit is now a core and loved fit for 2EROS. It boast a daring low-rise fit, the iconic 2EROS pouch which celebrates the male form and accentuates your every asset. The V10 Sunset captures the moment perfectly with yellow, orange, blue, and pink hues combined with silvery silhouettes and a gold foil feature.

This print isn’t over the top. The colors aren’t super bright and shouting “Look at me.” However, that said it’s a really interesting print that I will be will draw attention. Specifically, people asking where did you buy it or what brand is it?

Should this pair be in your summer rotation? We say yes it should. I”m a firm believer you need more than one pair of swimwear for summer. What’s the fun in just one pair? Get a few pairs like this and a few other from 2EROS. We guarantee that you won’t be disappointed in their swimwear.

aussieBum Sunkiss Swim BriefSummer is on its way here. It’s time to take a look at those swim briefs to see if it is time to replace some. Today we’re checking out some new colors of the Sunkiss swim briefs from aussieBum. They’ve added three more colors to this style bringing the total to 6 color options. Each swim brief features three colors in sort of a diagonal three color block pattern. Reminds me a swoosh pattern when I looked at them.

The color options for the Sunkiss swim brief are said to be inspired by the vibrant palettes of European Olympic. The new colors are Athens, Olympus, and Paros. I’ll be listing the colors in order from the bottom up. Athens is in the colors of red, white, and black. Blues are the theme of Olympus with navy, blue, and sky blue. Paros has royal blue, white, and pink for its colors. Then their existing colors are Hydra, Mykonos, and Santorini. Like orange, red, and white then take a look at Hydra. For blue, white, and lime check out Mykonos. Finally, for red, blue, and orange, you have Santorini as your color option.

I find these all to be pretty attractive options. I’m not typically a pink fan, but the Paros does have a draw to it. These swim briefs are handcrafted from sports performance Italian lycra. It’s a blend of 80% nylon and 20% elastane. They are made in Australia and are available in size small to extra large. This swim brief has the aussieBum name on the left hip in black.

Sunkiss would be a great swim brief for any location with it being a full brief. Though you might want to test the transparency of the ones with white first. Get yourself prepared for beach season and grab yourself an auusieBum Sunkiss swim brief.

I found Sluggers Swimwear, an Australian swimwear company on Instgram. They ran an ad and it piqued my interest. After looking up the brand I was really impressed. They have a great sense of style and believe many things we here at UNB also believe! I missed the call from owner Adam one day but we finally connected. I have to admit his laid back Aussie attitude came through and drives his philosophy in his company.

Adam, tell us why did you start Sluggers Swimwear? What made a bloke want to go into the swim brief business?

Since my late twenties I have been a fan of what Americans call ‘a speedo’. They’re just comfy and practical. Let’s face it – they’re what most Aussie guys wear to the beach or pool. The expensive name brands would lose their shape really fast in my pool, and most of the other brands didn’t carry the kind of prints or colours I wanted to wear. They seemed really conservative. Or they were just covered in logos. Or just looked terrible on me.

I decided to design my own, so I met with lots of very nice people and over the course of about 15 months and a few thousand dollars designed our pattern and prints and launched the online store.

I am still wearing a pair we released in August 2015. It’s survived two Summers of sitting in my backyard pool and spa and looks the same as it did the day I grabbed it off the shelf. I am pretty proud of that.

I am a regular guy. Average build. I am confident with clothes, but not too showy. The philosophy behind our designs is simple – if I wouldn’t wear it we won’t make it.

The crazy part is, people really responded. We’ve managed to make a profit from our first month in business and all the hard work has really paid off.

Sluggers Swimwear has 4 different styles. Why did you decide to do so many styles? What was your reasoning behind this?
Because we’re all shaped differently! And when you get down to three tiny bits of fabric and a string you suddenly get very specific about what you want. In our first season I realised that there were plenty of men into what I was doing, but not all of them fit the pattern. I decided we should make different cuts for different body types. Our customers are really responding to that, and it’s giving a lot of guys confidence because they know the cut is made for them.

On our phone conversation you mentioned that the Deetees do better in the States, why do you think it is more popular than your other styles?

No offence intended – but the beaches and pools in America that I have been to are a little more conservative than the beaches here in Australia. At least that’s my observation. The Classics and Racerbacks have a 5cm side, and that’s starting to get pretty thin for the States.

I think the DEETEES are a great cut for you guys because they aren’t making a big statement. They aren’t skimpy. There’s no bells and whistles. They are what they are. They have a 7cm side and nice coverage.

The DEETEES are made from super soft lycra. That means they feel incredible, but they also don’t hug you in too hard. Put simply – they leave a bit to the imagination. The sides are slightly wider. If you asked me what an entry level pair of Sluggers would be – I’d say the DEETEES.

I’m not sure of you know this, but DEETEES (or D.T.s) is a nickname Aussies and Brits have for swim briefs. It stands for Dick Togs.

I really LOVE the prints you do. How do you find such fun prints? I would dare to say this is the signature of your brand since you don’t have many solids. Would you agree?

I am a big fan of prints for swimwear. If you’re gonna let it all hang out you might as well have some fun. I love that we’ve become known for our prints. We put together the designs in house and then print everything locally. We buy a lot of art from places like Deviant Art and repurpose it for Sluggers. We’ve worked with some of our social media community as well. I love how you can take something that’s gender neutral or even feminine and play with the scale and colour to make it really masculine.

Our Pineapples, for example, are a watercolour design that sticks to different hues of blue. And the Bananas. They’re always a talking point!

Funny thing is though … I don’t really wear bright prints in daily life – just in shorts and Sluggers.

What has been your most popular print?

The most popular ones for us have been our Hokusurf print and the Pineapples. Although we added a print earlier this month that sold out in an hour, so I guess ADD ME is a big one as well. Blue is such an easy wear for guys of every skin tone, so they tend to buy those first.
You also mentioned that in Australia swim briefs are just what guys wear. You have come to the States a few times. What has been the reaction by American’s when you have worn them at beaches/pools/water parks?

I get looked at. The funniest part is when we’re at a resort and you walk up to the Pool bar and you’re almost naked compared to what other guys are wearing.

I do get a bit self conscious, but after a couple of Mai Tais I stop caring.

They really should serve those with breakfast.
We have the Swim Brief Challenge every year. In order to get more guys to wear swim briefs, regardless of age, body size, etc. What advice can you give guys to step out and try a swim brief?

Man up! haha. Seriously though – wear them for a few days and you stop caring. Body confidence for men really kicks in around the mid twenties and stays forever. That’s where our customer is. I don’t have a six pack. I don’t have big muscles. My nickname isn’t ‘Horse’. It’s not about that.

It’s about getting wet and drying off, throwing kids into the air as high as you can in the pool and having a laugh with your mates.

If you’re self conscious just wear them to the beach under your boardies and just wear them when you’re getting wet.

And if someone looks at you funny just smile at them.
In your trips to the States have you ever convinced guys to ditch the board shorts and put on the swim brief?

I don’t think so. If we get drinking with other families I might offer them a free pair. I tend to get lot of messages from Americans on my Instagram feed letting me know that they have started rocking Sluggers in their home town after seeing me in mine all Summer.
Lastly, do you have a favorite style or print in your current line up?
The Banana DEETEES have been my go-to over Summer. Those or the SKULLDUGGERS Classics. It depends on where I am. If I go to a water park with the kids I wear DEETEES. At the beach I am more likely to be wearing Classics.
Where can our readers buy your swim briefs? Or follow you online?

We’re available exclusively online at sluggers.com.au and you can follow us on Instagram and Facebook. Just google MEN WEAR SLUGGERS.

Thanks heaps for your interest in our little Aussie swimwear company. We really appreciate it.

We are fast approaching swimwear season. This year it seems in certain parts of the country that Swimwear Season never ended. It has been many 70 degree days all over the country. One of the newest pairs released is the Icon Swimwear in Blue and Rose Gold. It officially comes out today on the 2EROS website.

The official description is:

Navy and Rose Gold is the newest colour to be added to the Icon Series. The V10 Icon, a daring low-rise fit to celebrate the male form. It is designed to accentuate every asset and the use of timeless colours combined with foiled embellishments is a stance that will stand the test of time. Distinct, unforgettable and timeless without moving away from the 2EROS style.

I love the new color combination. The blue and rose gold look awesome. 2EROS has a way of making things just POP. The Icon line features the 2EROS logo on the back that will accentuate your assets. The two circles are strategically placed. Making this one of their most popular suits. It is also in black and white.

The Icon is also for the guy who doesn’t want to wear solid pink on the beach. Many of our readers will rock a pink swim brief. Wearing pink swimwear takes a man comfortable in his own skin. Even this bit of pink will catch attention people on the beach. We suggest you just smile back and rock the briefs.

This is the first of many pairs of swimwear that will be released from 2EROS. We look forward to more coming soon! It will also include underwear, activewear and more! So stay tuned and we will let you know when other pairs are released.  In the mean time shop the 2EROS site for some awesome underwear and swimwear.

Swim Briefs: The Bad RepGroundhog Phil says 6 more weeks of winter, but swim brief season is on my mind. We know swim briefs truly do not have a good reputation. This is especially so in the United States. Most representation of them are used to make people laugh. The photos that are passed around include one liner jokes. Movies use them to get a laugh, which I’ve noticed in a lot of kids movies lately. Videos posted online are of someone losing a bet, doing a dare, or think they are just being funny. These instances are definitely not helping the swim brief reputation.

Did swim briefs really just get a bad rep because of one hump? Women are praised for showing as much as they can including their humps. Is the male reproductive organ that shameful that it can’t be accentuated by lycra? Or is it that the guys are bashful in displaying their hump? I think it is a bit of both. Society seems to dictate that it is okay for women to show their whole body, but for guys to cover up the lower half. With that social hurdle, most guys aren’t going to push that envelope. Peer pressure wins out.

Unfortunately, I’m a victim to this. Soon I hope to rip open the envelope and just wear that swim brief like I want to do. Those of us that want to wear a swim brief need to lead by example. The more guys that wear them and do it respectfully. The better chance swim briefs will move from having a bad rep to having a good one.
