Congrats to the winners and we will have the 4th Annual wards next year in January/February.

UNB DRAWER OF FAMEThis is our 3rd Annual Readers Awards and we decided to do something fun and different. We have created the Drawer of Fame. This is our very own Hall of Fame! Men’s Underwear is really coming into it’s own. Each year more and more guys discover great underwear. This is our way to celebrate all things men’s underwear.
The Drawer of Fame is for pairs and people who have shaped the men’s underwear industry. You know those classic pairs that are just iconic. We have chosen 4 pairs to be our inaugural inductees and think they are the classics in every sense of the word. They also define a time in underwear. The four pairs range through the last 150 years.
The people we will induct are people who have had a major influence on the men’s underwear market. It could be a designer, model, photographer or anyone in the men’s underwear industry. My rough criteria was someone who has been in the world of underwear for a minimum of 10 years. This narrowed it down but it was still a tough decision. After going through people in the industry I wanted to induct just one person. However, I kept coming back to two people. Both of these individuals have had a major influence on underwear. I couldn’t imagine the market with out these two!

The Pairs:

1950
Jockey Classic Brief – These Y Front briefs are one of the pairs when you think of a pair that changed underwear. They were released in 1938 to the public. They become so synonymous with underwear in North America the term “Jockey Shorts” were the generic term for briefs. The Y fronts are a Trademark of Jockey. In fact they created key chains that featured this iconic pair! It’s a true classic that has been around us for over 80 years.
calvin-klein-underwear-01
Calvin Klien Classic Cotton Brief – Men’s underwear got one of its biggest jolts in the 1980’s when Calvin Klein started to market their underwear to the general public. Previous ads were nice but CK showed us men’s underwear could and should be sexy. Even a pair of white briefs made it stand out. It all started with the classic ad and snow balled. But had they only done this it wouldn’t be as great. CK took the brief and updated it with a modern fit and feel. That is still sold and made so many guys get them! They even showed up in the movie “Back to the Future!” CK caught the general publics attention in the 80’s/90’s. It jump started all guys starting to pay attention to underwear
 bike-10-3
Bike #10 Jockstrap – The Bike jock is the classic quintessential jock. The jock was created in 1897. It is the oldest design in our group. Jocks were mainly used for health and sports in the early days. In the 70’s the jock became apart of the fetish community in gay culture. It wasn’t till the 80’s/90’s that we saw the jock evolve. Then in the 2000’s the Fashion Jock came into it’s one. This is all because of this amazing jock! But nothing is as good as the classic jock. Unfortunately Bike is phasing this pair out, they will still make jocks just not the #10. All good things must come to an end. (picture by Jockstrap Central)
2xist-thong-y-backed-thong-12
2(X)IST Y-Back Thong – Thongs have been around for men for a while. They were relegated to strippers and the seedy side of underwear. In the 90’s 2(X)IST put out the thong that we feel made the style go to the mass market. It was the first thong we remember seeing at a major department store. This pair was many guys first foray into the world of thongs. It showed guys it was ok to wear something different.

The People

The two people we chose are Andrew Makay – Owner, N2N Bodywear Jason Scarlatti – Creative Director,2(X)IST . Each of these guys have left a major mark on the world of men’s underwear. I couldn’t decide which one to go with so we are inducting both!
Fashion Show II 2014
Andrew Makay launched N2N Bodywear in 1997. Its a brand that has never been afraid to show the sexual side of men’s underwear. His mix of classic styles and erotic wear has made N2N one of the giants in the world of underwear. Andrew brought the world to the notation that men can wear sexy underwear and still feel masculine. His work has become more of an art form. The designs of many of his styles accents the lines of a guy. Which looks super sexy. He and the guys at N2N never cease to amaze fans! You may think the market for N2N bodywear is a gay market but he’s spanning the market. All guys have come to love this brand. His underwear/swimwear/eroticwear is now a must have for underwear lovers everywhere.
Jason
Jason Scarlatti has been at 2(X)IST since 2003. He has been at the helm of many of the designs. 2(X)IST has brought style to the world of men’s underwear market. He has done this with the creation of prints, colors and stripes. 2(X)IST has created a a true fashion line starting with underwear. Lines such as the Sliq, Speed and Barcode have shown us that classic is definitely sexy.  They are now branching out into activewear, watches and even a women’s line. They have seen some of its design changed while Jason has been creative Director. The over all feel of 2(X)IST is classic. However, this is anything but boring. The colors, fabrics and waistbands they use has given them their own aesthetic.  I would say 2(X)IST is transforming into a lifestyle brand over just an underwear company!

Here are out initial inductees into the Drawer of Fame. We will add to these yearly during the time of the UNB Reader Awards. However, we may not induct as many each year but we think we need to celebrate all things Men’s Underwear!

540This past month we saw more pics of Justin Bieber in his CK’s. While he’s not the most ideal person many of us would like to see as an underwear spokesperson. He does bring attention to the area of men’s underwear. I asked our guys who they would to see as the new underwear model/spokesperson. Here is what they said:

Dustin

I’d like to see Nick Jonas as an underwear spokesperson. He has already recreated the Marky Mark CK ads, but he’s hot enough to deserve his own! (I can’t believe I think one of the Jonas Brothers is hot.) Aside from obviously having an amazing body, we know he’s not afraid to play to his gay fans so maybe an underwear line that’s not quite a basic would be fun. N2N, Body Aware, etc.

Honorable Mention: figure skater Max Aaron. As a former skater, I wish these athletes got as much recognition as other sports and while he needs to cool it with the eyebrow waxing, he’s got an ass that won’t quit!

UndiesDude

Here’s my opinion on the subject: Who should be the new face of CK? Someone who appeals to both men and women, unlike Justin Bieber. Someone who men aspire to be, and women want to be with. While I first considered someone with an “everyman” sort of feel, I came to the conclusion that an “everyman” didn’t fit the image of the brand. Instead, someone suave and sophisticated. So how about.. Brad Pitt! Sure, he’s not the younger guy, but he’s instantly recognizable, popular with both men and women, and certainly looks the part.

UNB Tim

I have said my pick before on Twitter. I think we need a mainstream sports star to really bring undies front and center. The way Jim Palmer did in the 80’s. My pick would be Jesse Palmer. If you aren’t familiar, Jesse is a former football player. He started at University of Florida and then went on to play with the NY Giants. In 2004 he was ABC’s “Bachelor.” He’s clean cut and All American. I have seen him on the Chew and other talk shows filling in and he has a great personality. I think he would have fun doing shoots, but would we get him in a bikini brief? HMM I don’t know about that but it would be a start to get him in undies!

UNB Bryce

Someone I think would be great as an underwear model or spokesman is actor Tyler Posey. He is the star of the MTV show “Teen Wolf.” He is not afraid to strip down and show off his body on his social media accounts. He also enjoys nicer brands of underwear, which he has shown off on his Instagram account. When he visited Portland for Comic Con he went to the underwear store here saying it was one of the best things in Portland.

Undies Rock

I hate to be that guy, but I have to be completely transparent and say that determining a good representative for an underwear company is a tough task for me. Not because there are too many to choose from, but because (in general) I have never really associated objects/products with idols.  Sorry for the run-on/dissertation.  Not the intent.  But to be honest, I would really like to see more normal looking men with fit, average, bodies, representing underwear companies (always been an advocate).  To help encourage all types of men to wear comfortable and fashionable undies.  I would much rather see a classy average looking dude in an advertisement than a celebrity (part of my problem is that I’m so detached from entertainment these days) or a crazy ripped, my veins are popping out of my bi-ceps, dude; it’ just not my thing.   I think a genuine approach to marketing an underwear brand will allow for a broader audience to try something new and not be afraid of social constraints.  I get it, some like to see celebrities endorse underwear brands they dig, and power on, but it doesn’t resonate with me, which is cool too.

UNB TMG

Recently Calvin Klein hired Justin Beiber as the new spokes model for their underwear. I was happy about that because I do like me a twink in nice underwear. Yes I do think Justin is a total hottie for a young guy and I love him in his Calvin’s.  I have always liked celebs and sports people in their underwear. I grew up with Jim Palmer in his Jockey underwear on the tubes of Enlace bikini briefs.

I watch tv and movies looking for hints of the underwear that the cuties that Hollywood hires wears. I have noticed underwear lines on many actors and they vary from briefs to boxer briefs and even boxers. God bless the material used to create pants these days.

If I was sitting on Santa’s lap and asking for specific guys to be underwear models this would b my list:

  • Zak Efron
  • James Marsden
  • Aaron Tveit
  • Eddie Redmayne
  • Finn Wittrock
  • Jack O’connel
  • Tom Daley

I am one of those guys who, despite being a bit older and 21 I still like guys in their 20’s, or at least looks like they are in their 20’s. I know I might be delusional but I like to think and feel like I’m still a 20’s something twink. Believe me, there is NOTHING wrong with feeling like that.

You might be able to figure out I like them younger and twinkish. There is nothing wrong with that, since we all are right in our own way.

I am hoping that the hot actors and athletes will be more open to modeling in their underwear. I know that WILL help me in the brands I purchase.

Bum-Chums, the quirky British Brand raises the pulses of men the world over this week as the new Kink Collection is launched unto the public. With a tag line of “Anything but Vanilla”, the beginning for this new collection looks promising.

Based on the practice of bondage and seduction, temptation and desire, Bum-Chums seek to encourage male objectification in a sensual and sexual combination of styles and fabrics.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Sculpted with a fitted and well cut pouch designed to naturally enhance, the cotton elastane fabric stretches and gives exactly where men need it in order to promote their assets neatly. While the slutty introduction of the Mesh fabric with high-stretch properties, combined with their signature contoured back seam, adds to the creation of a perfectly formed backside, firmed by the power-net.

The on-the-top binding adds strength and lift to the front, accentuating the separation between the cotton and the net, whilst pulling in the pouch sides and adding frontal displacement and enhancing by design.

Bum-Chums launch this collection just before Valentine’s Day and begin with the introduction of two classic kink colours, Red and Black. Black Cotton elastane pouch with Red Mesh everywhere else and detail in Black too.

Available online at www.bum-chums.com for just £15.99 for either the Hipster or the Brief.

Okay for a season that saw many ups and downs I was not sad to go out with that second half against the Panthers that we had. If there is a team that can take you completely by surprise it is my Seattle Seahawks. Now for the first time in three seasons we will not be in the Super Bowl, a sad but true statement.

Now generally I am not a very superstitious person. I’ve stepped on many cracks and my grandmother’s back is completely fine. That’s how it goes right? BUT I do have my lucky pair of underwear for Seahawk games. It all started four seasons ago and has continued ever since. Attempts to wear a similar pair have ended in heartbreak.

For me there are certain requirements that a lucky pair of underwear has to meet for sports teams:

  1. It must be a jockstrap. Sorry, but it does. Nothing says sports like straps.
  2. It must be in at least one of the team’s colors.
  3. It better be cute/hot/sexy as F.

So bam. Those three requirements in mind my lucky pair for the last four seasons has been my green Diesel jockstrap. It’s fairly simple as far as design goes but it holds up very well. The straps still give my bum a lift and that’s after lots of washes. Green, blue and grey all play parts for the Seahawks. The year that I started with this pair our big accent color was lime green and it just made sense.

Like I mentioned, attempts to switch this pair with others like it (Blue Diesel Jockstrap I’m talking about you) have not gone well. Seriously, terrible games…WHY 4th Quarter WHY?!?! So even on disappointing outcomes I know it would have been worse if I were not wearing my lucky jockstrap. So if you’re a Broncho fan or a Panthers supporter make sure to don your lucky pair this Sunday.

Who knows your orange jockstrap might just win Super Bowl 50!

I promise I’m not crazy!

They come in different designs and companies are become very creative! Every year when I think I have seen it all in jocks, someone releases a new take on the classic design. Time for another jock review! I have a couple items from FT that I like so I was optimistic. Fort Troff tends to like a hyper-masculine look so the camo print and large waistband weren’t a surprise.  However the soft, perforated fabric was. These are made of 84% polyester and 16% spandex.  All 3 versions have the same gray camouflage print but the stitching and trim. Colors that are available in red, blue and gray. A boxer brief, boxer jock and trunk are also available. (Fort Troff furnished this pair for review)

I wore these on a run which is when I would typically wear a jock even though most guys might use this for “fun”. This jock was really comfortable so it would work for guys who like a jock as underwear, too. The waist and leg bands are pretty thick so you are definitely aware that you’re wearing a jock.

The sizing lists a medium as fitting a 30-31, which is me, and it’s dead on. Nice and snug without being too tight. The pouch has a good amount of stretch so if you’re on the larger end of the size range, you should still be OK. I would follow your typical, American sizing for this pair.

What I liked most about this pair was that they actually held up as a jock! I have several jockstraps that are definitely just for play or as daily underwear. When I exercise, I sweat a lot and like everything up front to be nice and snug. Some guys might disagree, but too much bouncing on a run is not cute. I really didn’t have any issues with this jock other than some minor adjustments to the leg straps.  But that happens with every pair I own so I won’t hold that against them. Camouflage isn’t really my thing but I still liked the style. Different colors/patterns would make me definitely get another pair. They sell as a pack of three along with a bonus cocking for $40. Seriously.

Overall, this was a good, solid jock and made me think I should try more in the future. I will definitely consider Fort Troff more than I did in the past. I had considered them for fetish wear or a store for gear, which is hot, but not always practical. My fetish for brief/jock lines through shorts was also well satisfied with the thick leg straps through my white running shorts. 🙂

Modern ClassicsI’m going to start this article like some would start a cheesy wedding speech and define the word classic. The word classic is “used to say that something has come to be considered one of the best of its kind.” Simply “something that has been popular for a long time”. When it comes to men’s underwear fashion, there has definitely been one tried and true “classic” style in every sense of the word. The jockey brief, who just celebrated its 81st birthday has remained the go to underwear option for many men for many years. With good reason too. The basic brief covers all the fundamental functionality of underwear. But over the years there have been some many great upgrades to this style that will help cement it as a classic option for years to come.

First off let me mention this is one of my favorite styles of underwear. It has always been a display of simple almost humble masculinity to me. Subtle yet sexy. Simple but functional. My drawer has always been full of basic designer briefs. I can’t really think of an outfit where a basic brief couldn’t be an option. I to have had to get with the times and retire some of my favorites to make room for these modern classics.

In the last 81 years there have been some vast changes to men’s fashion. Some great technological/scientific advances that have changed the brief in many ways. With the introduction of the low-rise pant, the low-rise brief was soon to follow. This cut will sit just below your natural waist and the combination will help keep your undies hidden. They have also introduced enhancing technology, whether it be in the rear or front. Also, science has proven its important to keep your berries cool, and non-restricted. This revelation has often led designers to ditch the traditional y-front for a front seam or pouch. Here are some examples of brands paving the way for this classic style.

2100_000_front__61929.1409002595.500.750

The Wood Hip Brief is a perfect example of a classic style but chock full of all the goodies listed above. They are becoming one of my favorite brands for their simplistic attitude. This particular brief is cut high to show more thigh which helps mask brief lines in a suit or slacks. Plus, the rear is tapered to give you butt a nice fit look. Here they decided to ditch the y-front for a total flat front with no seem. Which allows your boys to sit comfortably. The fabric is made from a tree cellulose that is super breathable. Actually has some subtle moisture wicking properties. These modern classics were meant to be worn all day! The waistband is combed to feel extra soft and bears their name in an understated gold off to the side. Almost all of their colors bear a white waistband helping further that classic vibe. This brief is available from the Wood website for $20.

UN12-15-FullThe Classic Cotton Pouch Brief from N2N is another example of a classic that has had a modern facelift. These briefs are handmade in Los Angeles, and are one of the softest briefs I have ever felt. These are made from mostly cotton with just a bit of spandex to help contour the body and lift the butt. This is going to feel like more of a classic brief. Another hip cut, this will help stay hidden throughout the day. My favorite part of these briefs is the Nhance pouch. This is one of the most visually appealing and comfortable pouches I own. Unlike most, it offers a very open pouch that provides a more natural mobility. That combined with the extreme softness, I find myself grabbing these out of the drawer often. These bad boys are available on the N2N website for $19.

5219 (14)

It’s hard to poignantly describe the Clever classic brief when they have done so well on their website. “Basic, but don’t ever call it plain”, a great mantra for modern classics to date. Clever 5219 Classic Brief features another cotton/spandex blend. That’s made to stay cool and comfy all day. For the simple soul, these could completely replace your daily underwear drawer. Hip cut with a sexy contouring design. Once gain, this cut helps give the rear that tight fit look. The simple front seem front makes for a simple roomy pouch. Nothing too crazy in design that helps make this an easy transition for the classic lover stuck in his ways. This is a perfect example of a classic style that has been upgraded in all the right ways. This brief is available on the Clever website for $27.

I could list a thousand great examples. Between the new styles and technology, there’s no reason not to upgrade to some modern classics. I guarantee you’ll notice a huge difference! The men’s underwear market is ever evolving but some styles never change. They just need little updates here and there. It’s nice to know that there is a market out there that loves the classics like I do. This will always be one of my favorite styles. Keep an eye out on UNB as I will do my best to keep you up to date on any additions to the modern classics roster!
