Men’s Underwear

Unknown-33When we say the word lace, what comes to your mind? Is it, OMG it’s so sexy on a guy. Or, please god no it’s too girlish. I doubt very few of you say “I don’t have an opinion.” It seems no matter what you think about the topic, most guys have an opinion. So we are going to explore the world of lace. What better holiday than Valentine’s Day to do it !

Lace underwear for men have become popular in the last 6 years. Before 2010, I don’t remember seeing much of it on the market. There were fetish pairs but nothing in the “mainstream” of men’s underwear. Brands such as Candyman, BodyAware, Male Power and MaleBasics have become the brands producing lace underwear for men. The best thing is each one has their own individual style when it comes to lace.

Why is lace becoming so popular? I would say guys are allowing themselves to try more fabrics and styles. We no longer are getting boxed in to boxers! (yeah that’s a bad pun but I had to go with it). Briefs, bikinis, jocks and thongs are now all acceptable for guys to wear. Lace can make you feel super sexy, now bare with me non lace guys. I hear many of you going, “come on Tim, I want underwear for men, and if I wanted lace pick up a pair of women’s underwear.” Yes you could do that but lace underwear for men is made for men.

How is it made for men? The lace pairs on the market have a pouch and room up front. If you have seen women’s underwear there is nothing up front for support for a guy. The cuts are perfected for a guy. Most pairs I have seen have been bikinis, thongs and some boy shorts. Yes, I have tried lace underwear. I did a review of the Male Power Lace Bikinis and I was surprised how much I liked them. Will I wear them every day? Nope but for an occasional wearing it’s all good.

Lace underwear is for Fem guys or gay guys? This is not true. Lace underwear is a really interesting set of guys who like it. It’s not all gay or all straight. It’s a mix of both. There are gay guys who are like “Hell no I won’t wear that.” While there are straight guys who are like “I love how sexy they are.” It’s basically a cross section of all guys into undies.

I don’t care Tim I won’t wear lace underwear! If you say this, I may not change your mind on the issue. As guys I think we all need to try different styles when we can. Why get locked into one specific style or fabric. UNB has taught me there are things I think I won’t like, that I turn out loving.

If you are interested in lace underwear and want to try it. Go shop BodyAware, Male Basics and Candyman Fashion. We want to know what you think of lace underwear! Hit us up on Twitter or social media.

Unknown-31Sock It To Me furnished the Blamo!!! Boxer Briefs and socks for review. I was really looking forward to reviewing the pair.

Rating: 8.5/10

  • Daily Fit: 8/10
  • Sizing: 9/10
  • Construction: 9.5/10
  • Styling: 8/10
  • Daily Performance: 8.5

Pros: Fun, bold color, good/compact sizing, great durability.

Cons: No overwhelming cons.

UNB Tim recommendation: If boxer briefs are your cut, these are wonderful.

Sock it to Me contacted us a while back and wanted to know if we would review some boxer briefs and socks. Well, that was a no brainer! A company that made matching socks and undies. Yes we were going to review. They sent us four pairs, two for myself and two for UNB Brady. UNB Brady I have nicked named our Style Guru. Don’t let him fool you he’s got style!

Unknown-31

I was going to wear these on a trip I was going on and for the event I went too. But running around the house that morning it really wasn’t giving me support I needed through the day. So I took them off and but on another pair. I wanted to give them a good chance and this wasn’t it. But, I kept the socks on. Which I love! Colorful socks are my new love!

The next day I had a good 2 hour drive home. I decided to give them a chance. It should be noted I’m not a huge boxer brief fan. So I know my limits when I wear them. The pair did well with travel. They didn’t bunch up or ride up. I even noticed this when I was running around. They really held their place it limited a lot of my issues with boxer briefs. The only issue I had is I wished it had more support. It’s a personal preference that I have in all undies.

Back to the boxer briefs. As I mentioned they were really well made. I was really impressed. The fabric and fit were very good for daily wear. The print is my favorite. It’s a comic book type print with all the sayings when the hero gets into a fight. On the read background it really pops. Super fun print.

The sizing was pretty good for this pair. I received an XL and it fit well. I’m a bit bigger than the upper side of the scale and it didn’t fit too tight. They have pretty standard sizing for an American brand. If you see the sizing chart a medium is 32 and a large is a 36. So good job on the sizing

Unknown-30

Let’s talk about the socks! I loved these socks. They aren’t matchy matchy. Meaning they aren’t the same print on both. They sort of mimic the boxer briefs. They are a great compliment to the undies. How often can you show the world your underwear through your socks! My one issue I had was I’m 11.5 shoe size and it was a little tight putting on. After they were on I had no issues. If you have a 12 or large you may have issues putting the socks on. The socks were great and kept my feet warm through out the day. It was awesome!

Super Bright

Colors are making a big comeback in the world of men’s underwear. Those who love colors should rejoice! The bold fashion statement pairs are being released by more brands. One brand that is no stranger to colors is C-IN2. They have released the super bright day glow collection.

C-IN2 is no stranger to the world of bright undies. The Culture Club line were some really great prints. The colors in the Super Bright collection are Cone Orange, Shocking Pink and Toxic Green. They are definitely interesting names for colors. But C-IN2 has always had different names for colors. They rarely have blue, red or white. Some people like it and others don’t but we don’t think it’s a bad thing.

The Super Bright line has the traditional C-IN2 styles. They are Lo No Show Brief, No Show Army Trunk, Jock and Boxer Brief. I”m sure that one of these styles will be the perfect one for you. My personal favorite is the Lo No Show Brief.

Where would you wear this collection? A few places come to my mind. First, if you’re planning a night out to a bar with a black light. Imagine dancing with this showing over your jeans. It will definitely get you some attention. Would you wear it to the gym? I’m not so sure about that, as soon as you drop your pants every eye in the locker room would be on you. I mean it’s not a pair easy to hide. Next, if you want just a fun pair for every day wear. How many times have you rocked something super bright that no one knew you were wearing. Just to give you a lift in your day.

My overall impression of this collection is it’s super fun. I love it when an underwear company puts out a collection that is all about just having a good time and making a guy feel great. Color is an important factor in underwear. C-IN2 knows this and makes underwear for the color lover in all of us.

The pairs retail for :

  • No Show Brief – $24
  • No Show Army Trunk – $26
  • Jock – $22
  • Boxer Brief  $26

Find all these pairs on the C-IN2 website.

image003Marek Richard is not one to shy away from fun undies. This year for Valentine’s Day they have the the High School Sweethearts line. Will you wear this out with your date? Not sure but I definitely can see them out at a bar. Marek Richard just makes fun undies.

This collection has a lot of graphic tee’s, shorts and underwear. One of my favorite pieces is the Heart Cutout Long Johns. The T-shirts have some sayings that you will see in online profiles. I think they are pretty funny and coming from Marek Richard I wouldn’t expect less.

Here is what they say about the line:

Experience the bromance and adventure of two star-struck lover boys in Marek Richard’s latest lookbook release for Valentine’s Day: “High School Sweethearts”. Its an epic luv story of high school romance, but will it last after the Valentine’s Dance?! Feel the chemistry in a collection full of BJs and Dik Pic crop tops. Flaunt your assets with any of the “Eat Ur Heart Out” briefs and long johns. Or set the mood and enhance your decor with our fun home accessories including the “69” throw pillow and our “DTF” shot glasses. And don’t forget your BAE; make sure to grab a set of “Mine and Yours” briefs to show off your luv. So whether you’re in an LTR or just looking for NSA on some hook-up app, M+R has got the hot shit you need to get you laid this Valentine’s Day. And btw don’t be surprised if you feel the luv while you get a heart-on as you scroll through the site, cuz that little fairy in a diaper is readying his bow and arrow.

Unknown-20Get lost in these mazes from the land down under! aussieBum has continued to push the envelope with their underwear in both comfort and style and their line of ‘Billy’ briefs are no exception! Marketed as a brief for the “true iconic male” the brief sports a low rise cut with virtually no waistband. Giving you that feel of almost wearing nothing. Aside from their traditional colors for this line of briefs.

aussieBum has now introduced patterns to give these undies even more of a pop! Colors come in Maze designs blue orange and red. The Brief Maze Blue comes in a turquoise blue with dark blue and yellow maze design. The Brief Maze Orange comes in a sky blue with a yellow and orange maze design. The Brief Maze Red comes in red with light purple and white accents for the maze design. I personally have never been disappointed with anything I have ever bought from Aussiebum.  I am pretty sure this line of briefs is going to continue that winning streak. I enjoy a pair of underwear that is not only comfortable in supporting all my goods.  But also delivers in the eye candy department.

These briefs leave little to the imagination in terms of their small cut. What they lack in material, they make up for in their designs. Mind you, I am a big fan of any line of underwear boasts a flashy waistband. I wanna be proud to represent the brand I am wearing. But there is something about the Billy Brief that is intriguing to me. That right there proves how good Aussiebum is at keeping their undies fresh (no pun intended) and exciting! This overview is for the Billy Maze Brief.

But keep in mind that these same designs also come in a ‘Hipster Cut.’ For those guys that don’t wanna show too much skin. These Maze Designs are definitely going to be a big hit with me now that spring is right around the corner. I’m sure with their eye catching colors, you want to miss owning a pair yourself!

Find the new Billy Maze Prints on the aussieBum website. The Brief is $11.27 and the Hipster is $11.94

Congrats to the winners and we will have the 4th Annual wards next year in January/February.

UNB DRAWER OF FAMEThis is our 3rd Annual Readers Awards and we decided to do something fun and different. We have created the Drawer of Fame. This is our very own Hall of Fame! Men’s Underwear is really coming into it’s own. Each year more and more guys discover great underwear. This is our way to celebrate all things men’s underwear.
The Drawer of Fame is for pairs and people who have shaped the men’s underwear industry. You know those classic pairs that are just iconic. We have chosen 4 pairs to be our inaugural inductees and think they are the classics in every sense of the word. They also define a time in underwear. The four pairs range through the last 150 years.
The people we will induct are people who have had a major influence on the men’s underwear market. It could be a designer, model, photographer or anyone in the men’s underwear industry. My rough criteria was someone who has been in the world of underwear for a minimum of 10 years. This narrowed it down but it was still a tough decision. After going through people in the industry I wanted to induct just one person. However, I kept coming back to two people. Both of these individuals have had a major influence on underwear. I couldn’t imagine the market with out these two!

The Pairs:

1950
Jockey Classic Brief – These Y Front briefs are one of the pairs when you think of a pair that changed underwear. They were released in 1938 to the public. They become so synonymous with underwear in North America the term “Jockey Shorts” were the generic term for briefs. The Y fronts are a Trademark of Jockey. In fact they created key chains that featured this iconic pair! It’s a true classic that has been around us for over 80 years.
calvin-klein-underwear-01
Calvin Klien Classic Cotton Brief – Men’s underwear got one of its biggest jolts in the 1980’s when Calvin Klein started to market their underwear to the general public. Previous ads were nice but CK showed us men’s underwear could and should be sexy. Even a pair of white briefs made it stand out. It all started with the classic ad and snow balled. But had they only done this it wouldn’t be as great. CK took the brief and updated it with a modern fit and feel. That is still sold and made so many guys get them! They even showed up in the movie “Back to the Future!” CK caught the general publics attention in the 80’s/90’s. It jump started all guys starting to pay attention to underwear
 bike-10-3
Bike #10 Jockstrap – The Bike jock is the classic quintessential jock. The jock was created in 1897. It is the oldest design in our group. Jocks were mainly used for health and sports in the early days. In the 70’s the jock became apart of the fetish community in gay culture. It wasn’t till the 80’s/90’s that we saw the jock evolve. Then in the 2000’s the Fashion Jock came into it’s one. This is all because of this amazing jock! But nothing is as good as the classic jock. Unfortunately Bike is phasing this pair out, they will still make jocks just not the #10. All good things must come to an end. (picture by Jockstrap Central)
2xist-thong-y-backed-thong-12
2(X)IST Y-Back Thong – Thongs have been around for men for a while. They were relegated to strippers and the seedy side of underwear. In the 90’s 2(X)IST put out the thong that we feel made the style go to the mass market. It was the first thong we remember seeing at a major department store. This pair was many guys first foray into the world of thongs. It showed guys it was ok to wear something different.

The People

The two people we chose are Andrew Makay – Owner, N2N Bodywear Jason Scarlatti – Creative Director,2(X)IST . Each of these guys have left a major mark on the world of men’s underwear. I couldn’t decide which one to go with so we are inducting both!
Fashion Show II 2014
Andrew Makay launched N2N Bodywear in 1997. Its a brand that has never been afraid to show the sexual side of men’s underwear. His mix of classic styles and erotic wear has made N2N one of the giants in the world of underwear. Andrew brought the world to the notation that men can wear sexy underwear and still feel masculine. His work has become more of an art form. The designs of many of his styles accents the lines of a guy. Which looks super sexy. He and the guys at N2N never cease to amaze fans! You may think the market for N2N bodywear is a gay market but he’s spanning the market. All guys have come to love this brand. His underwear/swimwear/eroticwear is now a must have for underwear lovers everywhere.
Jason
Jason Scarlatti has been at 2(X)IST since 2003. He has been at the helm of many of the designs. 2(X)IST has brought style to the world of men’s underwear market. He has done this with the creation of prints, colors and stripes. 2(X)IST has created a a true fashion line starting with underwear. Lines such as the Sliq, Speed and Barcode have shown us that classic is definitely sexy.  They are now branching out into activewear, watches and even a women’s line. They have seen some of its design changed while Jason has been creative Director. The over all feel of 2(X)IST is classic. However, this is anything but boring. The colors, fabrics and waistbands they use has given them their own aesthetic.  I would say 2(X)IST is transforming into a lifestyle brand over just an underwear company!

Here are out initial inductees into the Drawer of Fame. We will add to these yearly during the time of the UNB Reader Awards. However, we may not induct as many each year but we think we need to celebrate all things Men’s Underwear!

Vote for your favorite model today! Today is the last day to vote in the UNB Readers Awards!

540This past month we saw more pics of Justin Bieber in his CK’s. While he’s not the most ideal person many of us would like to see as an underwear spokesperson. He does bring attention to the area of men’s underwear. I asked our guys who they would to see as the new underwear model/spokesperson. Here is what they said:

Dustin

I’d like to see Nick Jonas as an underwear spokesperson. He has already recreated the Marky Mark CK ads, but he’s hot enough to deserve his own! (I can’t believe I think one of the Jonas Brothers is hot.) Aside from obviously having an amazing body, we know he’s not afraid to play to his gay fans so maybe an underwear line that’s not quite a basic would be fun. N2N, Body Aware, etc.

Honorable Mention: figure skater Max Aaron. As a former skater, I wish these athletes got as much recognition as other sports and while he needs to cool it with the eyebrow waxing, he’s got an ass that won’t quit!

UndiesDude

Here’s my opinion on the subject: Who should be the new face of CK? Someone who appeals to both men and women, unlike Justin Bieber. Someone who men aspire to be, and women want to be with. While I first considered someone with an “everyman” sort of feel, I came to the conclusion that an “everyman” didn’t fit the image of the brand. Instead, someone suave and sophisticated. So how about.. Brad Pitt! Sure, he’s not the younger guy, but he’s instantly recognizable, popular with both men and women, and certainly looks the part.

UNB Tim

I have said my pick before on Twitter. I think we need a mainstream sports star to really bring undies front and center. The way Jim Palmer did in the 80’s. My pick would be Jesse Palmer. If you aren’t familiar, Jesse is a former football player. He started at University of Florida and then went on to play with the NY Giants. In 2004 he was ABC’s “Bachelor.” He’s clean cut and All American. I have seen him on the Chew and other talk shows filling in and he has a great personality. I think he would have fun doing shoots, but would we get him in a bikini brief? HMM I don’t know about that but it would be a start to get him in undies!

UNB Bryce

Someone I think would be great as an underwear model or spokesman is actor Tyler Posey. He is the star of the MTV show “Teen Wolf.” He is not afraid to strip down and show off his body on his social media accounts. He also enjoys nicer brands of underwear, which he has shown off on his Instagram account. When he visited Portland for Comic Con he went to the underwear store here saying it was one of the best things in Portland.

Undies Rock

I hate to be that guy, but I have to be completely transparent and say that determining a good representative for an underwear company is a tough task for me. Not because there are too many to choose from, but because (in general) I have never really associated objects/products with idols.  Sorry for the run-on/dissertation.  Not the intent.  But to be honest, I would really like to see more normal looking men with fit, average, bodies, representing underwear companies (always been an advocate).  To help encourage all types of men to wear comfortable and fashionable undies.  I would much rather see a classy average looking dude in an advertisement than a celebrity (part of my problem is that I’m so detached from entertainment these days) or a crazy ripped, my veins are popping out of my bi-ceps, dude; it’ just not my thing.   I think a genuine approach to marketing an underwear brand will allow for a broader audience to try something new and not be afraid of social constraints.  I get it, some like to see celebrities endorse underwear brands they dig, and power on, but it doesn’t resonate with me, which is cool too.

UNB TMG

Recently Calvin Klein hired Justin Beiber as the new spokes model for their underwear. I was happy about that because I do like me a twink in nice underwear. Yes I do think Justin is a total hottie for a young guy and I love him in his Calvin’s.  I have always liked celebs and sports people in their underwear. I grew up with Jim Palmer in his Jockey underwear on the tubes of Enlace bikini briefs.

I watch tv and movies looking for hints of the underwear that the cuties that Hollywood hires wears. I have noticed underwear lines on many actors and they vary from briefs to boxer briefs and even boxers. God bless the material used to create pants these days.

If I was sitting on Santa’s lap and asking for specific guys to be underwear models this would b my list:

  • Zak Efron
  • James Marsden
  • Aaron Tveit
  • Eddie Redmayne
  • Finn Wittrock
  • Jack O’connel
  • Tom Daley

I am one of those guys who, despite being a bit older and 21 I still like guys in their 20’s, or at least looks like they are in their 20’s. I know I might be delusional but I like to think and feel like I’m still a 20’s something twink. Believe me, there is NOTHING wrong with feeling like that.

You might be able to figure out I like them younger and twinkish. There is nothing wrong with that, since we all are right in our own way.

I am hoping that the hot actors and athletes will be more open to modeling in their underwear. I know that WILL help me in the brands I purchase.
