College guys have begun to branch out and try all different brands, styles, and fits of underwear. One variety that hasn’t caught on with younger guys as much as it has in other communities, however, is the brief. A recent poll from AskMen found that only 16% of men wore briefs, and judging from my experience, this number is even lower for college-aged men. Despite it being one of my favorite varieties of underwear, other guys my age don’t seem to want to give it a shot due to a combination of the perception that they’re like tighty whities or that they’re too skimpy.
To address the tighty whitie complaint, this couldn’t be further from the truth, and that becomes clear the second you start doing any research. Of course, the underwear aisle at Target might be filled with similar pairs to what guys wore as kids, but that is not representative of the larger market. One reason that tighty whities are so maligned is that they sometimes rise up close to your belly button and are baggy. Low rise briefs completely negate both of these problems. They sit right at your waist and the less material ensures they are form fitting and don’t stretch out in weird places. Then, of course, there’s the white part, and this isn’t a problem because most good brands have a wide variety of colors to choose from, from sleek black to bright blue.
Even when guys are aware of these better briefs, some complain that they’re too skimpy. The extra coverage of boxer briefs is great sometimes, but if you want to dress to impress, briefs are the only way to go. From experience, I know that girls like them even more because it makes your bulge and rear end look better. Considering probably no one else would care about what underwear you wear, this is an obvious pro to wearing briefs. Once you get used to the skimpiness, it is a great experience that you might never look back from.
I hope my fellow college guys will catch on to this.

These were a surprise when I received the package because I didn’t know what was coming and I had also never heard of this brand. I am always game to try new underwear so I was excited to try something new! The trunks came in a box with a peek-a-boo cut out hinting at the contents in the front and the back shows a man’s body with an elephant head which is linked to the spirit animal of this pair. By choosing these, it says you stand strong, bulldoze obstacles and that you’re a determined leader. A bit strange but I appreciated something different and the details that simply went into the packaging.
Once I pulled the pair out, I noticed the super soft bamboo cotton in a nice, purple color. There are panels on the front with an Aztec pattern that are a silky poly/spandex material. These are 65% Bamboo Rayon, 25% Polyester, 5% Nylon & 5% Spandex. Trunks aren’t my favorite cut of underwear and wild patterns aren’t my first choice, either, but the initial feeling when I pulled these on was a comfortable one so I was ready to have an open mind.
The medium covers a 30-32″ waist which was just right for me as a 31-32. There is a bit of a pouch but nothing too dramatic to where it affects sizing. Buying based on your true size should work just fine in this case.
It has been HOT here in Los Angeles so I knew these would be put to the sweat test! They were soft and comfortable when I got dressed and I am happy to say they stayed that was throughout the workday and errands after. Only minor pulling at the legs to readjust but I have that issue with all trunks/boxer briefs. This trunk definitely took on the hot day and the material held up well against moisture and dried pretty quickly once I cooled off at home. The soft waistband is on the larger side with Bia Boro proudly written across the front along with a branded tag facing out in the back. The gray side panels and elastic on the legs adds interest on the edge of being too busy, but that’s just my opinion.
I would definitely try another pair from Bia Boro – especially if they would start making a brief! As of now, it seems they only have boxer briefs and trunks. All of the prints are loud and busy, which isn’t a bad thing since most men’s underwear is boring, but it definitely has to be your style. Overall, a great first impression and a new brand to keep my eye on.

There was a time when men’s underwear were for men and women’s underwear was for women. The two were designed differently and very few things were used in each design. Over the last few years, we have seen a big shift in the design of men’s underwear. Fabrics and designs that were considered feminine were now being used in the creation of underwear. Now the lines just seem to blur.
The fabric is the biggest change in men’s underwear. It was only cotton, nylon and spandex blends for the longest time. Every so often you would see a silk boxer or maybe bikini. Then we got brands using lace and satin to create men’s underwear. These were two fabrics for women’s lingerie, not masculine men’s underwear.
Brands such as MaleBasics and BodyAware lead the way in this revolution. They weren’t afraid to reimagine men’s underwear. Giving it a bit of a “softer” side. MaleBasics was the first I saw doing a men’s lingerie brand. They were inspired by the women’s world. I found it really interesting that they were doing something outside the box. This was in 2010ish. They were way ahead on the trend that I would say didn’t really come to the forefront till about 2012-2013
BodyAware is one that I think took the trend and ran with it. They have a mix of what you would call masculine and feminine. At first, I looked at them and through they would be a niche player but in the last few years, I hear more and more guys talk about how they love BodyAware. From experience, they make damn good underwear. It’s sexy and fun, exactly what men’s underwear should be.
Who are the guys embracing this underwear? It’s not along sexual orientation lines. It’s as diverse as our readers. It’s gay/straight/bi guys who make up the fans. Guys that want to feel sexy and really don’t give a fuck about what you think of their underwear. Plus I think the mixing of the masculine and feminine is pretty darn sexy. It’s the two things being mixed together that is awesome. But this is an area that you either love or hate. There isn’t many in between.
Underwear is about being who you are. You can wear what you want and no one has to know. If you want to sport a lace brief under a suit, DO IT! Or if you want to wear a bikini to class in cargo shorts, do it! Underwear is about expressing your personality. Wear what you want! If you love lace or satin, rock them with confidence!

One style of underwear that is often overlooked is the bikini brief. Many would just wear briefs if they wanted that cut of underwear, and others would wear something like a thong if they’re going for the exoticness factor. I know some are hesitant to buy bikini briefs because the name implies they’re feminine in some way. But I believe you really can’t get much better than bikini briefs. I love them because they’re somehow exotic and unique, yet still comfortable and supportive.
For one, they make you feel and look sexy. They kind of remind me of what a bodybuilder would wear in a competition, which is very appealing to me. Like a good pair of briefs, they allow you to show off your thighs. Overall, it’s clear that when others see you in this pair, all eyes will be on you. If you don’t feel the above when wearing one, it could be used as a good motivator to get fit.
Usually the material used in bikini briefs is more of a polyester blend, which is something I personally like. This is also beneficial for hotter climates because it provides more ventilation. For this reason, they’re also an ideal underwear for working out. My ideal pair is underwear I can wear running errands, working out, and when I’m about to make love and it works perfectly for each. Bikini briefs definitely fit the bill because they’re very comfortable due to their cut and material, good for working out because of the breathability, and good for making love because it’s sexy and skimpy. Few other pairs could say the same thing.
I hope that more brands start making bikini briefs and more guys realize how great they are. Even cheaper brands like Fruit of the Loom make good bikini briefs, which says a lot about how comfortable and appealing they are.

I’ve tried many thongs over the years and the fabric and tail width are two factors that I think contribute most to making a thong comfortable. Tails around an inch wide and fabrics like bamboo, modal or micro modal fabrics, and knit silk are some great options for thongs (Read last week’s post Thongs 101: Fabrics). I feel that tails that are thinner like a string can dig into you more than a more traditional cut back. Then too wide of ones you get too much fabric between the cheeks, which can make them uncomfortable. Here’s some options we think could make decent beginner thongs.
Underweardude
The 2-xist Y-back thong is a great beginner thong because in a way it doesn’t really look like a guy’s thong, instead like a weird jockstrap. If you like that look and want an upgrade, the Sliq line version comes in some cool colors. I believe it to be entirely microfiber instead of cotton based.
If you want something a little less “gym” and a lot more “sexy”, the Classic Cotton Thong from N2N is a good starter pair as well. Though if you don’t like the idea of a contoured pouch you should look elsewhere.
The Bottom Drawer
Unfortunately my top pick the JM Natura thong is of a brand closing it’s doors. So now neither of the thongs I’m going to suggest aren’t typically the style I go for, but the fabric makes it a good choice for a first thong. The Male Power Bamboo Micro Thong is made out of 95% bamboo and 5% lycra with a tail width of 1 1/4″. Bamboo fabric is a new discovery for me. It’s very soft and comfortable between the cheeks and everywhere else. Problem with this one is I can only find it through a third party sellers on Amazon or Walmart.
The next one I’m recommending isn’t one I’ve tried, but several people have highly recommended it. Even someone starting their journey with thongs recently tried it. They found it to be comfortable enough for all day wear. It is the Obviously’s AnatoMAX Thong. This thong is made of a blend of Micro Modal and Lycra. The fabric along with others I’ve talked to is why I decided this sounds like it would be a good thong for beginners.

Between the two Garcon Model pairs I had worn prior to this trunk, a Sport Brief and a boxer brief from their older line, I had an ambiguous attitude toward the brand. I really liked the Sport Brief, but the boxer brief was not my favorite pair. I hoped this would be more like the Sport Brief since it’s part of the same line, and luckily I was not disappointed. Right out of the package, I could tell this was a comfortable and stylish pair of underwear.
Wearing this pair over an entire day was a very pleasant experience. It was comfortable and, at least after the first day I wore the pair, the legs did not ride up. I couldn’t even tell I was wearing underwear throughout the day at work. It was a decent pair of underwear to work out in, but that wasn’t really where it shined. Still, I liked how it was tagless and the fabric was breathable.
I absolutely loved the fabric blend. I think bamboo is a really interesting fabric and makes for a good pair of underwear. Adding the 5% elastane was a smart move because it gave it more stretchiness and made it very form-fitting. As with the Sport Brief, the pouch feels natural and doesn’t require any readjustment over the course of the day. It was also the perfect length for a trunk, and although I haven’t tried their older trunks, they looked a bit too short for what I would normally consider a trunk. I will note that I wasn’t too excited by the color selection because it really only comes in very bright colors with the exception of Navy. I would have liked to see a gray or black pair. That didn’t bother me too much because the comfort and style definitely outweigh that.
This pair is definitely true to size and it’s stretchy enough where it would be comfortable even if you ordered a size lower or higher. It really fit like a glove without being too tight.
What struck me most with this pair was its balance. By that, I mean the pair was not overly flashy, but also not boring. The waistband is bold and modern, but not gaudy. Overall, it would be a great addition to your underwear drawer simply because it shows off your assets and is comfortable. Although I wish the price were a bit lower, it’s not ridiculous by any means and I still wholeheartedly recommend this pair.

We bring you a new brand called #Hashtag Hooker. It has an odd name but has some really amazing pairs and a great philosophy in making underwear and swimwear!First, before we get into anything, can you explain the name? Why did you call it Hashtag Hooker?
I wanted a strong brand name that was catchy and that could resonate with my audience. The brand embodies a glamorous lifestyle with a fashion edge where you can feel sexy and confident when wearing the product. As a designer from New York, I am always inspired and motivated by anything different, unique and that stands out with a hint of grit and naughtiness. I prefer to approach things unconventionally and want to offer something different than what’s currently offered in the underwear and swimwear space. Also, the brand advocates equality and breaking barriers, with the name taking a stance on the ideas of “more than meets the eye, contradicting any current beliefs, no preconceived judgment, and being free to be who you are.” You can read more about the brand on my About Us page at https://shop.hashtaghooker.com/pages/about-us.
Do you feel this name may scare some guys off from the brand?
To be honest, this has been a challenge that has weighed over the brand since its launch 2 years ago. As with any new idea or anything controversial, I believe it takes time for the general public to grow accustomed to it. Of course, #HOOKER may not be for everyone. But so far, I have grown a niche following and I treasure my audience who understands and appreciates the brand’s message.
Tell us about your underwear and swimwear?
Behind the provocative brand name and identity, our mission is to create and offer a product that is not only designed well but also performs with our customer’s purpose in mind. As a fashion design graduate from Parsons School of Design with 20-years experience working for major fashion brands, my strength is to design with the utmost attention to detail, fit, function and construction. Our styles do just that. For example, if you dissect our underwear, the styles look great but if you look close, you will find that they are made with the best quality fabric with one of the softest waistbands you’ll ever find on the market. The fabric is made from special Coolmax® yarns which is usually found in performance type undergarments to keep you dry all day long. I’ve wear-tested every piece myself, making sure they fit and function as they should. After years of unhappily wearing other brands and experiencing discomfort, my goal was to design our underwear so comfortable that you feel like you’re not wearing anything at all, and I have to say objectively, I’ve succeeded. Our customers are testaments and believers. One customer has even shared “he’s thrown out all his other underwear and only wears #HOOKER now.”
Our swimwear is designed with the same philosophy. The fabric is performance grade and everything has been wear-tested for chlorine and salt water. Even the #HOOKER Gold pieces with crystal embellishments are easy care that can be machine washed. All the exclusive pieces from the #HOOKER Gold line come with a special pouch that can be used for travel and machine wash. One more thing to mention, both the underwear and swimwear are designed with a hidden internal pocket. My inspiration behind this detail was being on the beach and not having anywhere to put my cash and ID if I wanted to get up and grab a quick refreshment. The two latter examples are how I design with function in mind.
When we talked before you spoke of the swimwear is the focus over the summer, What have been some of your best selling swimwear this year?
The focus this Spring/Summer season for swimwear is Gold, White, Green, and an exclusive Pop Art Camo print that I created myself. This year I wanted to take the brand to a fun and bright spin for the season, using sparkle and metallic gold as accents. Our crystal embellished pieces are still our best sellers. Our customers crave uniqueness and quality. They want to stand out and be noticed. The crystal embellished pieces are quite captivating and attention grabbers when you see them in person. They radiate and catch the light, thus sparkle in the sun. Our crystal embellished products have become the brand’s trademark and we are now US Patent Pending, which means #HOOKER is the only place where you can get them.
Our readers range from gay to straight, is your underwear made for everyone?
Although we have a niche clientele, our products are designed for anyone who is confident and comfortable with his individuality. I am excited to collaborate with UNB so we can broaden our audience and connect with men who want to try something special and not be afraid to express himself.

You are focusing on Underwear but what underwear do you currently offer and what are your best sellers?
Our underwear comes in 3 styles: Johnny Jock, Fletcher Brief, and Evan Boxer. Each style addresses each type of customer and/or any given purpose with looking and feeling sexy always in mind. Our jock is for the daring or someone who wants to wear less but with support. Our brief is for someone who wants something traditional but still is fashionable. Our boxer is for someone who prefers conservative coverage but still wants to look #hot. We offer all 3 styles with crystal embellishments in the #HOOKER Gold line and recently added them in our Pop Art Camo print for Spring/Summer. In the fall you said you would focus on underwear again, do you have new pairs/line planned?
We are planning to promote and build a campaign around the underwear in the fall. We plan to introduce new colors, more crystal embellished styles, and prints.

When it comes to thongs, the fabric can make or break them especially if you are at the beginning stages of wearing them. Really the fabric can make or break any pair of underwear. I would argue more so for thongs with fabric in a place you aren’t used to. You want to make sure the tail of the thong is made of a fabric that will be comfortable. It’s going to be sitting between the cheeks all day.
What should you look for in the fabric? I’d say how soft it is and a lighter weight fabric. If the fabric is lighter in weight then there will be less fabric between the cheeks. Soft fabric is always something good to have all the way around. Who doesn’t want something soft against the skin? Ideally, you’d want to be able to touch the fabric to figure out which you think would be comfortable in the back. Unfortunately, it isn’t common to find a thong at the store unless you are lucky enough to live near a men’s underwear store. You’ll most likely be ordering online, so it won’t be realistic feeling the fabric of the thong. Now how do you decided on what fabric to look for in a thong that you can not touch? First, you could go by underwear you already own. You already know which pairs are soft and lightweight in your underwear drawer. Look at what they are made of and look for a thong made of it. Another option is read reviews and look for ones that talk about the comfort of the fabric.
Some of the fabrics I think would be good options to try are bamboo, knit silk, and modal or micro modal. The modal and bamboo fabrics are usually blended with another fabric like lycra for some elasticity. For me, thongs made out of these fabrics can go as unnoticeable between the cheeks. Some lace and mesh fabrics can be scratchy, so you’ll want to avoid those for now. If one fabric doesn’t work for you then try some others. Once you find a fabric that is comfortable for long term wear, you can start experimenting with other fabrics.
