When is it Time to Say Goodbye?

We all have one; That favorite pair of undies, that pair we always keep coming back to. Let’s face it, these favorite pairs get worn a lot and get worn out. When is it time to say “Sayonara” and finally let go? Though it may pain you to do so, there are some tell tale signs that your favorite pair of underwear needs to be sent packing:

  • Rips and Holes: Sure it can look stylish and sexy for jeans, but if you can see bits you don’t need or intend to show, its time to let go.
  • Elastic Waistband Death : Fairly straightforward, if they can’t stay up on their own then you probably shouldn’t be wearing them. Wardrobe malfunction just waiting to happen.
  • Stains: Gross. Enough said.
  • Overwashed Fabric: Is paper tissue stronger than your undies? Toss em!
  • Shame : Would you want to be caught dead in them?

So now that you’re able to move on, what are your options? Here are a few things you can try.

  • If you have the room, just keep them as a memento! Honestly, I have a couple pairs from my past that just sit on the bottom of my drawer. I know they are there but I never wear them. Call me crazy!
  • See if your favorite style is still available – Check the designer web page to see if the style can be still ordered. If not check ebay or a similar online auction site. Some stores like TJMaxx and Marshall’s often carry styles that are no longer available in regular retail stores.
  • This might seem a bit strange but use the fabric for a craft project. Just from a simple internet search, I was able to find instructions on how to turn old (clean) undies into a book cover or even a wallet!
  • My favorite option – Use it as an excuse to find a new pair. Out with the old and in with the new! Find a new favorite, and learn from your last favorite pair….stock up!

KnickersXY: A New Store in Cincinnati

We just got word from KnickersXY about the store opening. We love finding new places to buy underwear. To me a smaller store is much more fun to shop in, the staff is more knowledgeable and better customer service. Here is what they sent us about the store.

Forget what you know about men’s fashion in a new age because we are going retro.  Knickers XY, a unique men’s lifestyle store, provides an edgy yet sophisticated shopping experience in the heart of Hyde Park in Cincinnati.  On top of offering high-end, niche brands like: Andrew Christian, 2(x)ist, Diesel, Papi and Pull-in, Knickers XY also features a modern barbershop that would make Don Draper quiver.

When one walks into the store on Hyde Park Square it’s like leaving the Midwest completely.  Surrounded by sexy undies, house music and comfortable active wear is what Knickers XY refers to as, “The Vault.”  This portion of the store is dedicated to all sorts of shaving and skincare products from Nickel and Art of Shaving, to Alchimie and Grooming Lounge.

“We wanted to be a unique, destination location not only for Cincinnati, but for the region”, said David Fender, COO of Knickers XY.  “There is nothing like us anywhere else, not even New York.”

Though Knickers XY will not be pursuing online sales the trip to the store is part of the experience.  You could be the manliest, man’s man and still have a ball shopping in this store!  Then one must factor in the Salzano Brother’s Barbershop located in the heart of the store.  Fresh off their accolade from Cincinnati Magazine as “Best Shave in the City”, the Salzano’s offer fashion-forward men’s haircuts, facial and hot towel services, as well as skin treatments, which help prevent aging.

The store is a great event space too.  There is an entire area that overlooks the selling floor, which makes for an awesome area to throw a party.  “We welcome any and all types of events in the store, mainly because we are proud of the space we have built,” said Austin Lutz, store manager.

BC Cancer Foundation Awareness

We got some of these images from Beyond Big Branding and they told us about this effort. Its not too much underwear related but it’s a good cause! Here is the info from the creators:

My name is Rob and I am one of 2 riders from my restaurant, Score On Davie, taking part in the ride to conquer cancer, a 2 day bike ride from Vancouver to Seattle, raising money and awareness for the BC Cancer Foundation. To take part in the ride, we each have to raise a minimum of $2500…this is our second year participating and our focus this year was on male cancers(prostate, testicular, etc) and the impact diet and exercise can have on the prevention of cancer in males. Joe Kendrick(my colleague/co-rider) is a phenomenal photographer and you see the result…the calendars are $20 each with all proceeds going to the ride…we are hoping to raise at least $15,000 in the Vancouver area and we need people to get out there and buy them for this amazing cause!

How Professional Should Your Underwear Be?

Cocksox UnderwearThe Union Bank of Switzerland, now known as UBS for a more international appeal, with offices in 50 countries around the world and ranks as one of the worlds top global investment companies, has issued a 44 page dress code to its employees in Switzerland. If the program is successful it may spread to employees worldwide. Of course we are interested in this because the topic of underwear is addressed.

With 44 pages, can anything be left out?! An example of the details in this code is the requirement that men are not to wear the same lace up dress shoes two days in a row in order to give the leather time to breath. Men have to wear ties that match the bone structure of their face! When it comes to underwear, most of the regulations are directed toward the women; their panties always get more attention. However, men are not off the hook in the underwear department. According to the code, the male employees’ underwear must not show, and to quote from page 36, “underwear should only be made from high quality fabrics, easily washable but also remain in good condition after several washings”. Ok, if you’re never allowed to let them show why does it matter what quality they are? I guess no silk or dry clean only fabrics. When it comes to the visibility of men’s underwear, another page states “your underwear should be functional, and shouldn’t be visible through your clothes, nor should anyone be able to guess what’s underneath them”. So that means no jock lines and no bulges boys. Let’s hope the NFL never adopts this dress code or there would be no reason to watch football anymore. The issue that sparked the dictating dress code for the company to save face was the 69 billion dollar bail out the company received in the wake of the global financial crisis. Honestly UBS, I don’t think your bankers jock lines where the problem.

Having employees who look professional is an important aspect of public representation. I believe a company has every right to expect their employees to follow the guidelines set out by the company and represent the standards they have established. However, a business should respect an employee’s individuality and personal freedom to express themselves even in dress. There has to be balance between the two, employee and employer, a mutual respect for each others benefit.

When it comes to underwear in a professional setting, a man wouldn’t want underwear with a suggestive, offensive or even vulgar name around the waist line showing nor would he want to walk around “pitching a tent” in unsupportive underwear. Would a client of the bank really be offended because they could see the lines from a mans briefs? “Oh my God he’s wearing underwear!” I doubt it. You have to give the consumer some credit not to expect to be served by a robot with no individuality as if they lived in the “Leave it to Beaver” era. Yet again, there are people out there that do demand to be given the very best service and assume that everyone serving them will have the same standards, tastes and demeanor they do. It’s not right but it’s reality.

If these customers don’t receive that service from you they may go else where. These patrons are often the ones with the deep pockets that a bank needs. So maybe it is better to aim high since no one would complain about a teller looking too professional. I think the main thing UBS needs to remember is that their employees are people and should be given respect. If UBS employees feel brow beaten and unappreciated, that negative feeling will pass on to the customers. Attitude is far more important than looks. I wrote a similar blog a while back about a dress code for police officers in the UK and I’ll say the same thing to UBS I did to them. Let the guys wear sexy underwear; it will boost their morale and performance! Ultimately the success or failure of this dress code will depend on how UBS management presents it to the employees.
