Men’s Underwear

Category

Adam-Levine-10-27-12Waistband advertising is a little phrase that I said in my head after I started seeing different celebrities and men walking the street, getting in their car, and doing daily activities with a peek of their waistband from the underwear they were currently wearing.  It’s great to see the various men of the world showing signs of 2(x)ist, Calvin Klein, Diesel, and so many more.  As consumers and underwear readers, what affect does this have on us?josh-duhamel-10-1-11

To me this waistband advertising has two sides to it.  First, it makes the celebrities more real and more down to earth knowing what brands theyhave picked as their personal favorite apparel.  It fascinates me to see what type of underwear different men, whether celebrities or not, are drawn to.  Secondly, it unravels a new layer of intimacy to the person’s being.  Knowing what underwear someone is wearing is one of the most intimate and revealing portraits of who they are, apart from being naked.  We are not ashamed of the underwear that we are wearing but sometimes we do not want to reveal that most intimate detail of our being.  The waistband can declare the brand but not always the style.  Is it a brief, a boxer, a thong, or a jockstrap?  For the most part, we don’t know but we wonder and assume. Exclusive - Daniel Craig Gets A Newspaper

I expect that the various brands love seeing celebrities and social media pictures of various people displaying their waistbands.  In a way, it is a walking billboard showing their brand in real life.  Models show the glamour of the brand while these real life examples bring it back to the everyday consumer.  Seeing a pair of beautiful underwear on a model, the fit and form and then to turn around and see it on my favorite celebrity actor out and about, would definitely peak my interest in a purchase.

UNB Model Profile featuring Nathan Mckellips

IMG_0081

Nathan sat down with us at UNB to discuss his modeling career to date and show us some of his best work.

UNB Kyle:   What was your first modeling gig and how did you come to get it?

IMG_0457

Nathan:  My first modeling gig was in 2009. I modeled for a bar that I was working at. Afterwards, the photographer asked me if I would come back and work with him on some projects he had. I went back to work with him and the rest was history.

Kyle:  Sounds like you were in the right place at the right time with that job.  What made you want to pursue modeling?

Nathan:  I had always wanted to pursue modeling since I was a little child. I would see the ads for designers and I knew I wanted to be like models in the clothes.

Kyle:  Which shoot do you consider your breakthrough in your career?

Nathan:  I consider my breakthrough shoot, was my first photo shoot in 2009. I consider this my breakthrough because after that shoot I was asked to come back for some projects and that lead me to flying to Orlando for a shoot and runway and then to San Diego to shoot and the snow ball keeps rolling from there.

Kyle:  It’s great that that first shoot has had such an impact on your career and will be one you never forget.  Which shoot has been your favorite? Why?

Nathan:  My favorite shoot was back in 2010. I was on the beach in San Diego. What more is there to love than shooting on the beach.

Kyle:  Very true!  I am sure it was torture!  Which shoot has been your most challenging? Why?1688938_10152364069226491_6829431375471912057_n

Nathan:  My most challenging shoot was earlier this year. I did a photo shoot with a few dead octopi. The smell was awful, they were cold and slimy and I was barely clothed with them on me. It was a love/hate shoot. Loved the creativity it involved but hated the smell.

Kyle:  I can imagine.  Probably not what you thought you would be modeling with but a great picture was the outcome.  Are there any brands or photographers you would like to work with that you have not worked with yet?

Nathan:  YES!! I would love to work with Armani, Prada and Dolce & Gabbana. Some of my favorite photographers that I would love to work with is Nigel Barker or Angelo Sgambati.

Kyle:  What is something that your fans don’t know about you outside of modeling that you want them to know?

Nathan:  I actually have a degree in Chemistry with a concentration in Biochemistry. I also spend the summer of 2012 exploring China. Ni hao!

Kyle:  That is a very impressive degree.  What kind of diet and exercise do you do to prepare for shoots?

Nathan:  If I have to show abs, then I go vegan for a week before the shoot. It cuts out all excess lower pooch. No drinking and lots of rest.

Last night I think the Holiday party season really got kicked off. It made me think of what would be great pairs to wear to a holiday party. Now I am not one for the kitty over the top holiday prints. A few companies like aussieBum do them very well but the ones at big box stores I usually stay away from. No cartoon characters or elf prints for me.

So this got me thinking what would be 5 great choices to wear to a holiday party and be in the spirt but not be over the top. I also wanted them to be pairs you could wear the rest of the year because let’s face it wearing Merry Xmas undies in July is just sad. So I put my brain in over drive to come up with what would be 5 great pairs.

040733_61106--426_583--1028222539

1. 2(X)ist Tartan No Show Trunk

This pair is a mainstay at 2(X)ist every holiday season. It’s just festive enough to be considered holiday but can be worn year round. The new cranberry stripe is just fun. Before they had a plaid print and a solid. I think this addition is a great one. Available at the 2(X)ist site for $24. Also available in a brief and long johns.

2. John Sievers Natural Pouch Brief in Racing Red

I personally think the John Sievers line from International Jock is one of the most under rated brands on the market. You don’t hear about it much but its some of the most amazing underwear. Especially for those who have extra up front. The pair I have I just love. So when I saw the Racing Red this is perfect to wear under your holiday best. It will keep those endowed guys super happy all night and look great while doing it! The pouch is one of the best on the market, hands down. Available at International Jock for $24.95

3. Clever 2209 Soccer Boxer – Green

I know we have many fans of the boxer brief and the long boxers are one of the biggest trends in men’s underwear right now. This one from Clever is perfect for wearing to a party and coming home and lounging around in them after. Made out of a sports mesh you could wear it to the gym outside of the holiday season or during your favorite sporting activity. Available from GDD World at Candyman Fashions for $31.48

4. Mosdus Vivendi Masai Boxer Red

Not everyone wants a long boxer for Holidays, they can be a little uncomfortable under a suit. The Masai Boxer from Modus Vivendi would be great under a suit for your company holiday party. It won’t give you any crazy underwear lines under your pants and has a low waistband that will keep you comfy all through the night. Plus the color is bright and festive. A tip, wear a tie that matches your undies for the holidays! Available at Modus Vivendi for 25.50€

5. Andrew Christian Almost Naked Arch Jock – Holiday Collection

We had a brief, trunk, long boxer and boxer. What would the holidays be with out a jock? Not everyone wants to wear something traditional. The Almost Naked Arch Jock from the AC holiday collection would be great under jeans you would wear to any party. The pouch will give you great support through out the night and if anyone saw it it would be a conversation starter to say the least. This is a limited edition pair and is available at the Andrew Christian site for $26.93

These are a few suggestions we’d love to hear more of your choices on what you should wear or what you did wear to a party!

When you think of specific underwear brands, you tend to associate them with certain ideas or designs that they excel at.  Gregg Homme is one of those brands for me and I always associate them with a more daring, sexy, revealing design scheme.  I had the pleasure of wearing the Showoff Jockstrap and it did not disappoint in those areas.  This jockstrap was what I consider Gregg Homme to represent.  This brand brings out the sexy side in an individual and allows you to push the envelope and feel good about yourself.  The jockstrap is appropriately named Showoff because that is what I did in it.  This jockstrap is my first sheer jockstrap.  The front of the underwear has a nice sheer material that allows you to show everything off with a stripe design throughout the front pouch.  Another great benefit to this front pouch is how it is an anatomical center seamed pouch that allowed great room and movement for everything.  The front pouch offered plenty of room and was not uncomfortable at any part throughout my entire work day.

The cheeky backside of the jockstrap is just as fun as the front.  Like most jockstraps, this one offers straps around the butt to add support and outline more body you are showing off.  Some jockstraps have tight straps or rough feeling straps but these where soft and comfortable all day long.  Sometimes, I did not even remember I was wearing a jockstrap!

IMG_8482

Between the front pouch, the waistband, and the back straps, this jockstrap met all expectations of a comfortable, sexy pair of underwear throughout a long work day.  I wear a medium and this pair fit me perfectly.  I never had a moment that was uncomfortable, chaffing, or anything bad.  The waistband features a rubber logo of the brand in the center.  The rubber logo seemed a bit out of place with the rest of the underwear but in the overall appeal of this underwear that is not a semi-con I am worried about or would keep me from anything about this underwear.

Gregg Homme has managed to mix sexy with comfortable and proven that sexy underwear doesn’t have to only be worm minutes before it is shown and removed.  The Showoff Jockstrap offers all around sexiness with its revealing sheer front and open jockstrap back.  This jockstrap comes in basic black and white as well as fun colors such as pink, lime, and purple, the one I wore today.  Allow yourself to be sexy whenever you want in Gregg Homme!

Pros:

  • Sheer pouch
  • Soft, comfortable straps
  • Adequate front pouch

Cons:

  • Rubber logo

Ratings:

  • Daily Fit = 9
  • Sizing = 9
  • Construction/Materials = 9
  • Styling = 9
  • Daily Performance = 8.5
  • Overall = 9

Gregg Homme furnished this pair for review.  You can find this pair for $40.95.

UNB Holiday-5

When you think of Holiday gifts, underwear is given a bad wrap. Remember when we would hurriedly run down and open our presents on Christmas Day and you’d eventually get to that present with underwear and go UGH, and throw it aside and try to forget it? Flash forward to know and I think just about every one reading this blog would love to get underwear! But the question is would you give underwear as a gift?

Underwear is one of the most personal gifts you can give someone. So many people won’t buy underwear for their friends, usually just their boyfriend/husband. Giving it to a friend could send a wrong message to them, since it’s not a regular thing to give anyone outside of dating. But, what if you want underwear for Christmas? How do you go about getting underwear? We have suggestions:

  1. Come right out and tell your friends that you want underwear. Why hide that you are an underwear fanatic? Tell them what you like and create a wish list on one of your favorite sites. Amazon has exploded in men’s underwear and is easer to get friends to go there to buy something rather than an underwear site.
  2. Start talking about underwear to your friends. If you’re a straight guy this could be harder to do. I was having a discussion with Jon on the site. How he wished it was easier for him to be more open about undies. Mention how you used to hate getting undies and now you’d love it now. They may not get the hint, but you never know! I think gay guys would be more incline to  buy a friend underwear, than a straight guy.
  3. If you have friends you know won’t buy you underwear or you find it hard to bring up the subject (see there straight guy in #2), give hints you want gift cards to a store. Store such as Macy’s, Dillards, and even a Visa Gift Card.
  4. Lastly, if you can’t get any of those, then just buy what you want for yourself. That way you can get exactly what you want, the color, style and brand. Put it under the tree and thank yourself when you open it.

Here are a few suggestions, we’d love to hear how you broach the subject with friends. Post comments or let us know in our social!

Unknown-33Let’s face it, you guys LOVE mesh! It crosses all sexual orientations and lifestyles. I have heard from gay, straight, and bi guys who all love Mesh. They love showing off in it for their loved ones or just to show off in general. Mesh is a trend that is now a main stay in men’s underwear. McKillop is no stranger to mesh undies at all. Since I started covering them they have always had one form of mesh or another.

The pair we are profiling is the McKillop Elevate Brief (Mesh). What’s speical about this pair? Well first it’s got a great silhouette. The pair has a solid waistband and larger leg openings than most mesh pairs. Also this pair is part of the enhancing collection from McKillop. Some of you may be saying “Enhancing, I hate underwear that has foam and such to enhance me!” This pair uses other methods to enhance you rather than pair you take off and your partner go, WTH?!

Here is how McKillop explains it: “Mckillop Elevate Collection is all about Male Enhancement, whether it is the rear or the front McKillop is here to help. Our specialty is that we do not use foam to enhance, we actually use a selection of custom elastics, fabrics and a very talented team specially trained to create your lift.  But it is not only the lift, the elastics create an optical illusion making you look smaller as well.”

This pair is $40 on the McKillop site! And make sure you check back next week for something we did with McKillop!

ajactive

GoSoftwear has a line called American Jock. The American Jock line  has released the AJ Active line recently. It has been out since October but we think it deserve some attention. There are a few different pairs but we are going to focus on the Active Sport Brief! Which is color block brief made out of a stretchy mesh material.

The Brief comes in three different color blocks. They are Yellow, Blue and red. As you can see the color is in the waistband, sides and trim. The main body of the brief is a black sports mesh. This is a full cut brief with a 3 inch side seam. This means you will have full coverage, well except for the mesh! Its great for those who want a brief but not a super small cut.

The materials of this pair is 88% polyester 12% spandex. Topped with a 1.5 inch waistband with American Jock written in the band. The black writing doesn’t make the branding as noticeable. Had they used a white it would have stood out more. I know many of our readers are not fond of branded waistbands. Lastly, this pair is made in the USA.

This pair is perfect for working out or any really active lifestyle. The material will breath and conform to your body. You shouldn’t have any issues with the pair loosing its shape. The mesh is one of the hottest materials in men’s underwear and will feel great against your skin! You can find this on the Go Softwear site for $28.50

Underwear News Briefs has had the pleasure of teaming up with various models and photographers throughout the years, showcasing their work across our site.  To continue showcasing these great artists, we are doing a series of profiles each week to allow you to continue to get to know these great people, their lives, and their work.

This week’s model profile features Derek Yates.

DerekYates-RickDay3

Derek sat down with us at UNB to discuss his modeling career to date and show some of his best work.

UNB Kyle: What was your first modeling gig and how did you come to get it?

Derek: I don’t really remember my first gig, per se, but my first photoshoot I guess would be by a local photography at an agency in my hometown that I was working with at the time to work on my modeling and acting skills before going to some competitions. They were just simple test shots.  I consider my first REAL photoshoot to be with Ethan James based in Murfreesboro, TN. He has a great artistic eye, and has a way of using a small space for all his models and making it seem new in all of his shots while making his models just look so good.

DerekYates23

Kyle: What made you want to pursue modeling?

Derek:  I’ve always thought modeling would be a lot of fun. You get to have the opportunity to meet so many fun people, travel a little bit, and a chance to portray a type of acting in still shots, which is another part of my career. I consider myself still at the start of my career, and can’t wait to see what the future holds.

Kyle: Which shoot do you consider your breakthrough in your career?

Derek: As mentioned before, I feel my shoot with Ethan James was the kickstarter for my modeling career. It was the first round of pictures I had that came across super professional, which made me look professional. So I was able to use them to help market myself to start getting more and more interest, while gaining, for the lack of a better term, a fan base.

Kyle: Which shoot has been your favorite? Why?

Derek: I wouldn’t say any were or were not my favorite. Each has had its own flair, with different setups, different clothing (or lack there of), different photographers, and all for various reasons. I’d like to say I’ve learned something from each shoot that I have done that has helped me become a better model. So with that said, they are all my favorite for that reason.

Kyle: Which shoot has been your most challenging? Why?DerekYates12

Derek: None of my shoots have really been all that challenging I’d say, as far the shoot itself. The challenging part to any shoot, if you are doing anything that shows off any part of your physique, is just making sure you look your best. That means keeping up with my fitness regimen as well as being on point with my diet, and both at times have had their difficult moments for one reason or another.

Kyle: Are there any brands or photographers you would like to work with that you have not worked with yet?

Derek: The first thing that popped in my head was Calvin Klein. I dunno, there’s something about being able to say you were a big header (no pun intended) for Calvin Klein’s underwear brand. That’s not to say any other brand is bad, or not as good. It was just the first thing that popped in my head because I recently was talking to a model friend and it got brought up as being on our “Modeling Bucket List.”

Kyle: What is something that your fans don’t know about you outside of modeling that you want them to know?

Derek: I’m fairly open about what my life entails through social media. The one thing that seems to get lost in the cracks with my fans though is that I am the co-founder of 1N3, which is a non-profit my mother and started to raise awareness about the consequences of drunk driving after my brother was killed 3 years ago by a drunk driver. Our general mode of operation is going to different events, school, functions, etc. and presenting our story in hopes of impacting people to think more about their action, and that your choices matter. We pull his wrecked van on a trailer for people to see the impact first hand in that way also. The biggest factor to our non-profit is that after choosing to forgive the woman who killed my brother, we then brought her on our team after being released from prison to come and be a part of our presentation, which has made an even bigger impact since then when people are able to hear her story and see how we all work together for the same goal of trying to make our roads safer for everyone.

Kyle: What kind of diet and exercise do you do to prepare for shoots?

Derek: I am the first to admit that I am still very much a newbie, in a way, when it comes to things like this. I learn something new almost everyday it feels like when it comes to fitness and diet. My journey has been long, but rewarding the sense of discovering new things about my body, how it works, and what it wants. Each person’s body is different, and it is all a science as far as how to prep for a shoot vs. doing your normal workout and diet. Like I said, I’m still learning, and I would hate to give improper advice, BUT, recently, what I’ve seen that has worked for me as of now is starting to cut out carbs a few days before as well as water to try and clear up any bloat and in attempts at tightening everything up as much as possible, plus upping my cardio a bit more a few days before as well to try and burn off just a bit more unneeded fat.

tumblr_nfd33qYyW81qkjycfo1_1280-1Timoteo has released the Athletico Line and one of the stand outs of the collection is the Trunk. It has a color block pattern that accents a guys body. Timoteo has been really good at making underwear/swimwear that accents a guy. This pair really flatters and shows off what a guy was gifted with! The colors definitely add to this flattering.

Things to know about this is it has a matching Timoteo branded waistband. Meaning a new waistband was created for each pair. The colors available are Red/Grey/White/Black, Blue/Black/White/Grey and Blue/Grey/White/Orange. Each one is pretty nice but I still love the red best. The orange/blue comes in a very close second!

Materials used are a 96% cotton and 4% spandex blend. So this pair will conform and keep you comfy all day. Sometimes if you have a pure cotton pair it can loose its shape during the day. The addition of the spandex will give it just enough stretch to last throughout the day.

The Athletico Trunk retails for $28 on the Timoteo Site. If you like the pair go check them out!

Picture above is Raphael Melo as photographed by Timoteo.
