In Part 1 of this two part “mini-series” I talked about something that has bothered me (primarily as a straight dude in an arena that’s largely occupied by, and thus catered to, gay dudes) about men’s underwear in the United States, which is the double standard this country applies to men and their underwear. Forty years ago a woman’s “intimates” were just that, intimate only she (and her husband) knew about them. In 2012, society is completely accepting of 200-foot billboards of a Supermodel in a demi cup bra and a thong draped on the side of a building in New York City. Yet, if a guy is caught in a pair of orange bikini briefs, societies reaction is, “we don’t really need to see that” – even if he’s got three percent body fat. More importantly, I gave two reasons for why this double standard exists.

The first was that America is still attached to its puritan sensibilities in many ways, and it hasn’t gotten past them when it comes to well, a man’s penis, and therefore neither have they gotten past the underwear that touches it. And the second: Despite the fact that today, men have just about the same amount of choice in underwear as do the ladies, should any single man deviate from the boxers or boxer briefs in colors pre-approved by our puritan sensibilities, he may, and more-than-likely be subjecting himself to ridicule that’s devoid of these realities and worse, steeped in homophobia.

In order for the prevalence of any negative stereotypes and double standards to be reduced, the “thing” being stereotyped must become “common.” So, when it comes to men’s underwear, all of the styles and colors that society perceives as “gay” or “taboo” must start to make their way into department stores. I truly believe if just that were to happen, we’d slowly start to see minds open about men’s underwear, but it’s much easier said than done. The reason is because department stores have “buyers” who purchase the underwear directly from the designer, rather than the designer providing whatever cuts, styles, or colors to them it wants. The problem is that the majority of these buyers make their purchasing decisions based on the pre-determined stereotypes I’ve discussed already. And far too often, designers do not take a hands-on approach in the process, emphasizing their desire to see some of the “riskier” styles or colors on store shelves alongside “the basics.”

Thankfully, some underwear designers have recognized that the only way to bring their concepts into the mainstream is through mainstream market saturation. Leading the way seems to be Andrew Christian. He recently made a deal with Nordstrom to carry several of his products (all of which push the boundaries of conventional and stereotypical wisdom about what men’s underwear should always be) in select department stores around the country, and an even greater number of them on Nordstrom.com. While in Chicago recently, I stopped in the humongous Michigan Ave. Nordstrom which was retailing his underwear. I asked the guy working “The Rail” section how well the underwear was doing, his response was “we can’t keep it in stock.” I wasn’t surprised at that answer, but was surprised when he responded to my next question which was more pointed. I asked him how the underwear was selling among straight men, to which he replied, with something along the lines of, “a lot, which was really surprising to me at first, but we get a lot of (straight) guys who’ve bought one or two pairs that come back for more and some of them have told me how much they like them.” It was really music to my ears.

I took away two big things from the conversation (and the very picked over selection of underwear). The first was that great underwear both in terms of how it fits and how it looks, can make its way into the mainstream in spite of it being of unfamiliar design.  And perhaps more importantly, it proved what I have been saying over the course of this two-part article correct—a big reason these stereotypes exist is that for far too long, both the designers and the buyers looking to sell their underwear have subconsciously been perpetuating these stereotypes by limiting society’s exposure to new concepts.

The amount of minds that need to be changed simply won’t be changed by more exposure to new concepts in a few department stores or on their websites. If my dad catches a glimpse of any one of my 20-some odd pairs of colorful Andrew Christian briefs, he still will not inhibit a judgment or comment. And even if more department stores follow Nordstrom’s trend offering in-store retail that is guaranteed to change minds or at least, perceptions, the Sarah Millers of the world will continue to write articles in Men’s Health conveying to straight men that women want their underwear to be boring and uncomfortable. My point is that it’ll likely be a few more years before Jason Scarlatti doesn’t have his newest collection giggled off the set of the Today Show, but the remedy to all of these things is clear.

As Nordstrom receives quarterly sales reports for each of its stores, it will see how the Andrew Christian and C-IN2 underwear are flying off the shelves. They’ll respond by making more of it available at far more locations, and instead of the trendy 18-35 section, they’ll be able to directly compete with the Calvin Klein’s in the underwear section at each store. Satisfied customers will seek out the designers’ websites, where they will be exposed to things like fashion jock straps and thongs. Slowly but surely more department stores will be offering the new concepts and while basic white, black, and grey briefs, boxer briefs and boxers will never go away (nor should they) they’ll no longer be the average guy’s only choice when he needs a couple new pairs.

Make no mistake. The problems I outlined in Part 1 will continue to rear their ugly heads from time to time. The double standard that has been set about men’s underwear-that it must be utilitarian and boring can (and will) be eliminated by courageous designers bringing their new concepts to department and retail stores. When that happens, the stereotypes will naturally fall by the wayside, and finally, finally straight guys who stumbled into the fascinating and evolving world of men’s underwear no longer have to evangelize in anonymity.

There is nothing better than a wearing a fun swimsuit that is eye catching. The Manus Men’s Swim Brief offers fun style and great comfort. If you are in the market for a new swimsuit and want to get lots of attention then you should pay attention to this review. The bold print I am reviewing is the Tropical Leopard. At first glance it seems like its a bit much for a mens swimsuit but sometimes our wardrobe needs some whimsy. A rainbow confection animal print. It’s Lisa Frank meets Jersey Housewives.

There is a vintage feel to the design of the swimsuit. This is a full brief swimsuit. And I say full brief because today’s trend for swimsuits tend to be a lower cut on the waist and a higher cut on the thigh. The 3 inch side seams with full wide front and back coverage evoke an old school chic look for the beach or pool. The fast drying material is a Polyester and Spandex blend. The front is fully lined in a nude color of the same material. The waistband does not have a drawstring so if you are gonna go jump in waves be warned. I don’t foresee that to be too much of an issue since the fit at the waist is perfect. My only real issue with the design was the lack of tightness around the legs. I prefer a brief to stay in place a little more securely.  All I needed was a thin piece of elastic around the legs to keep the back in place.

I was definitely noticed at the gym when i swam my laps and hopped in the jacuzzi wearing this bathing suit. I got a few compliments from guys asking where I got it. I was surprised to see how receptive guys were being about such a bold print. Normally after the jacuzzi I sit in the sauna hoping my bathing suit with dry a bit before I throw it into my bag. I was really surprised by how dry the suit got in such a short period of time. So for the guys that hate putting your shorts over a wet bathing suit at the beach you should check this brand out.

The summer might be over but it’s always a good time to stock up on fun swimwear. Go for it guys!

The weather has started getting a little cooler here in Atlanta (believe it or not).   Soon we will be into Fall and then eventually for what we call “winter”.   Just cold enough for most Southerners to go into hibernation and stay indoors for a couple of months.  And for those of us who love to be outdoors no matter what the weather, it’s the season of hot men in running tights.   I run year-round, so I own several pairs.  Worn with a long sleeved t-shirt and running shoes, it’s the perfect combination of just enough and not too much clothing to keep me warm on those blustery days.  I received the PX Runner athletic tights from N2N Bodywear in a size medium, and although it’s not quite cool enough to wear them for my morning runs I gave them a try one day while working out in the fitness room where I live.  These tights are multiple fabric; the solid fabric is 79% recycled polyester and 21% spandex, the mesh fabric is 96% micro polyester and 4% spandex.  Super stretchy and form fitting, the standard that N2N is known for, these tights are not for the faint of heart.

The first thing you notice about these tights is the pouch front.  True to form, the pouch is designed to accentuate your god-given parts, and leaves nothing to the imagination.  And I do mean nothing.   Anyone who sees you in them will know just exactly what you are working with down there.  As daring as I tend to be, I’m not sure I would ever be able to wear these out running unless I wore shorts over them.   I caught two of my neighbors who happened to be in the fitness room stealing glances; lord only knows what they thought of my attire.  I do love the way they look though.  The different colors of the accent fabric and the mesh portions almost create a natural definition of the leg muscles.  And as I worked out I didn’t get over heated since the mesh is very breathable.  I did an upper body workout and then ran on the treadmill for 45 minutes.  I have to admit that as I ran I forgot about the pouch and just got into my run.  They were that comfortable.   So who knows, maybe once it’s actually cold outside I’ll give them a whirl on the streets.  That’ll be sure to stop some traffic (just what Atlanta needs, another traffic jam).

These athletic tights are available in three color patterns: black and white with grey mesh panels, yellow and white with black mesh panels, and blue and black with white mesh panels.

Pros

  • great fit
  • breathable mesh panels
  • inside drawstring

Cons

  • prominent pouch may cause some to wear additional layers

It’s the last Underwear of the Week! That mean’s its Boxer Brief week. For this week, we decided to do something classic, but with a twist. This pair looks like your everyday ordinary boxer brief, but it’s made out of Modal. Modal is a great fabric that has great qualities when made into underwear. The first is it keeps moisture away from the body. The next is it feels super soft. No one likes rough underwear. It may looks simple but it is perfect for anytime of athletic activity you may do.

Calvin Klein is one of the very first designer underwear companies. They haven’t slowed down since they first hit the scene in the 80’s. They keep making great pairs like this boxer brief. Some of the reasons its our underwear of the month:

  • Made out soft micro modal
  • Has a soft microfiber logo waistband
  • Designed contrast color piping
  • Constructed with a contoured pouch
  • Available in Black, Blue and Red
  • 90% modal 10% lycra

You can find this at underwear retailers online and in retail stores across the country. It is listed on the Calvin Klein Website site for $26.

Baskit is famous for their comfort first underwear, their superb use of hi-tech fabrics and their heightened sense of style. Baskit Energy Jocks and JockBriefs include all those qualities and more and they’re now at Jockstrap Central.

Starting with the fabric, Baskit has used a stunningly soft 4 way stretch fabric (for fit and expansion where needed) designed to wick moisture while under the hottest of circumstances.

Energy Jock:

A traditional jock, both front and back with a contoured pouch with contrasting high-density overlock stitching mostly as a design element. The one inch wide leg straps are made of Baskit’s signature plushed elastic for support and comfort.

Energy JockBrief:

A perfect melding of a brief and jockstrap. While the front is like a typical brief, Contrasting high density overlock stitching not only creating a nice design element but also defining the actual contoured pouch of the garment. The back is essentially a brief fabric back with the ass cut out of it giving it the same great view you’d expect from a jockstrap.

Finally, the waistband of both the jock and jockbrief features a heavy duty soft and plushed 1 3/4 inch elastic with large repeating Baskit logo throughout.

Jockstrap Central has the jocks in black, riviera blue, super white and gold and the jockbriefs in black, super white and gold. Be sure to check out their stunningly hot model Santos at Jockstrap Central putting all seven styles through their paces

Sizing is the one thing we hear most about here at UNB. Nothing worse then finding the perfect pair of underwear getting it home and find out it doesn’t fit. This is a big problem. Its’, I would say, the biggest complaint in underwear today. In order to remedy this we want to give you some advice, that is generally true, in picking out the best pair.

Here are a few tips to make sure you get the best fit.

  • Geography – pay attention to where the underwear is made. Depending on that you can usually gauge if the pairs will run small.
    • Runs Smaller: South American (Columbia and Brazil), Central America, Asia (Japan and Indonesia)
    • Similar to US: Australia, European (but be careful), Canada
  • Online Reviews – Not all of the brands in the areas above run small. If you check our reviews on the major sites, including FreshPair and UnderGear. You can see how well they fit.
  • Sizing Guides – Even us brands run small. The best example is Rufskin. They only have small, medium and large and not in the typical sizes. Other brands do that as well. So you can have Mediums that range form 30 to 34 inches.
  • Ask – A friend, the company or us! We regularly field questions from readers and are glad to do so. You can also ask on Twitter, Facebook or anywhere. We may have to get back to you but we’ll answer your question!

This is a really quick and dirty guide on sizing. We will cover this a lot more in the next few weeks. We will be doing a massive update on our sizing chart as well. It’s one of the most visited pages here at UNB.

There has always been a market for fetish wear in the underwear community for men. Over the last few years I have noticed a new trend in designs. Functional underwear design and fetish wear design are merging together. The Modus Vivendi Denim Look Brief is an example of this trend and I was lucky enough to review it and have to admit that even though I wear mostly thongs there is nothing sexier than putting in a great brief. This sporty brief, part of Modus Vivendi’s Fishermen Collection, with a football pant inspired cross lace front is definitely a great addition to my underwear collection.

There is no denying the main design on this brief is to accent your crotch. Tie the cotton cords tight or leave it lose. The versatility of the look depends on how much you wanna show off. The lace ties are accented by a border of leather looking material. There is definitely a visual accent to the crotch by these vertical black accents. But there is more design that just peek a boo pubes. Keeping with the denim look of the briefs there is a cute plastic appliqué to the rear waistband that mimics the label on a pair of Levis.

The softness of fabric, made of 95% Vicose (Rayon) and 5% Elastan, provides a pleasurable experience to wear the garment all day.  Here is a tip: If you are gonna wear these briefs under your jeans all day then leave the ties loose. The leather look material rubs aggressively in your skin if the ties are tied tights. After sitting at my desk for a few hours I had to loosen the ties for more comfort. I also found the ties to be a little too long so I just cut a few inches off.

I had never worn a pair by this brand before. I have found that when an underwear brand markets itself to cater to the fetish community there tends to be a cheapness to the production value. The materials, design and finish of a garment for high quality fetish wear can really break your bank. This brief is fun, functional and is affordable.

If I were to continue with the rest of my review of this brief then we would need to post it on a more adult website. Let’s just say that the lace in the front got loose. Very loose. And I dont think I have more fun with a pair of briefs on. 🙂

Pros-

  • Sexy design
  • Soft fabric
  • Looks great on

Cons-

  • Leather like fabric abrasive on skin
