Underwear News Briefs has had the pleasure of teaming up with various models and photographers throughout the years, showcasing their work across our site.  To continue showcasing these great artists, we are doing a series of profiles each week to allow you to continue to get to know these great people, their lives, and their work.

This week’s model profile features Derek Yates.

DerekYates-RickDay3

Derek sat down with us at UNB to discuss his modeling career to date and show some of his best work.

UNB Kyle: What was your first modeling gig and how did you come to get it?

Derek: I don’t really remember my first gig, per se, but my first photoshoot I guess would be by a local photography at an agency in my hometown that I was working with at the time to work on my modeling and acting skills before going to some competitions. They were just simple test shots.  I consider my first REAL photoshoot to be with Ethan James based in Murfreesboro, TN. He has a great artistic eye, and has a way of using a small space for all his models and making it seem new in all of his shots while making his models just look so good.

DerekYates23

Kyle: What made you want to pursue modeling?

Derek:  I’ve always thought modeling would be a lot of fun. You get to have the opportunity to meet so many fun people, travel a little bit, and a chance to portray a type of acting in still shots, which is another part of my career. I consider myself still at the start of my career, and can’t wait to see what the future holds.

Kyle: Which shoot do you consider your breakthrough in your career?

Derek: As mentioned before, I feel my shoot with Ethan James was the kickstarter for my modeling career. It was the first round of pictures I had that came across super professional, which made me look professional. So I was able to use them to help market myself to start getting more and more interest, while gaining, for the lack of a better term, a fan base.

Kyle: Which shoot has been your favorite? Why?

Derek: I wouldn’t say any were or were not my favorite. Each has had its own flair, with different setups, different clothing (or lack there of), different photographers, and all for various reasons. I’d like to say I’ve learned something from each shoot that I have done that has helped me become a better model. So with that said, they are all my favorite for that reason.

Kyle: Which shoot has been your most challenging? Why?DerekYates12

Derek: None of my shoots have really been all that challenging I’d say, as far the shoot itself. The challenging part to any shoot, if you are doing anything that shows off any part of your physique, is just making sure you look your best. That means keeping up with my fitness regimen as well as being on point with my diet, and both at times have had their difficult moments for one reason or another.

Kyle: Are there any brands or photographers you would like to work with that you have not worked with yet?

Derek: The first thing that popped in my head was Calvin Klein. I dunno, there’s something about being able to say you were a big header (no pun intended) for Calvin Klein’s underwear brand. That’s not to say any other brand is bad, or not as good. It was just the first thing that popped in my head because I recently was talking to a model friend and it got brought up as being on our “Modeling Bucket List.”

Kyle: What is something that your fans don’t know about you outside of modeling that you want them to know?

Derek: I’m fairly open about what my life entails through social media. The one thing that seems to get lost in the cracks with my fans though is that I am the co-founder of 1N3, which is a non-profit my mother and started to raise awareness about the consequences of drunk driving after my brother was killed 3 years ago by a drunk driver. Our general mode of operation is going to different events, school, functions, etc. and presenting our story in hopes of impacting people to think more about their action, and that your choices matter. We pull his wrecked van on a trailer for people to see the impact first hand in that way also. The biggest factor to our non-profit is that after choosing to forgive the woman who killed my brother, we then brought her on our team after being released from prison to come and be a part of our presentation, which has made an even bigger impact since then when people are able to hear her story and see how we all work together for the same goal of trying to make our roads safer for everyone.

Kyle: What kind of diet and exercise do you do to prepare for shoots?

Derek: I am the first to admit that I am still very much a newbie, in a way, when it comes to things like this. I learn something new almost everyday it feels like when it comes to fitness and diet. My journey has been long, but rewarding the sense of discovering new things about my body, how it works, and what it wants. Each person’s body is different, and it is all a science as far as how to prep for a shoot vs. doing your normal workout and diet. Like I said, I’m still learning, and I would hate to give improper advice, BUT, recently, what I’ve seen that has worked for me as of now is starting to cut out carbs a few days before as well as water to try and clear up any bloat and in attempts at tightening everything up as much as possible, plus upping my cardio a bit more a few days before as well to try and burn off just a bit more unneeded fat.

tumblr_nfd33qYyW81qkjycfo1_1280-1Timoteo has released the Athletico Line and one of the stand outs of the collection is the Trunk. It has a color block pattern that accents a guys body. Timoteo has been really good at making underwear/swimwear that accents a guy. This pair really flatters and shows off what a guy was gifted with! The colors definitely add to this flattering.

Things to know about this is it has a matching Timoteo branded waistband. Meaning a new waistband was created for each pair. The colors available are Red/Grey/White/Black, Blue/Black/White/Grey and Blue/Grey/White/Orange. Each one is pretty nice but I still love the red best. The orange/blue comes in a very close second!

Materials used are a 96% cotton and 4% spandex blend. So this pair will conform and keep you comfy all day. Sometimes if you have a pure cotton pair it can loose its shape during the day. The addition of the spandex will give it just enough stretch to last throughout the day.

The Athletico Trunk retails for $28 on the Timoteo Site. If you like the pair go check them out!

20141121_kale-owen_432Finding new underwear is one thing I love to do for you guys. It’s also one of the hardest things. Watching the underwear industry and spotting a new brand is hard when we try to keep up with over 100 brands. Luckily we have great readers like you guys and brands like Planet Undies to help us bring you new brands. The latest brand is Kale Owen.

Kale Owen is an underwear company out of France. Here is what Planet Undies sent us about the brand. “”At the image of the man of today”, Kale Owen is based on materials selected for their comfort and quality while bringing a touch of originality. Kale Owen invites us to discover not less than 13 lines of underwear, declined each around a theme (Seduction, I am a male, Owen fashion and Dreams & Desires). Set of textures & materials, printed patterns, jewelry & accessories… the Kale Owen brand has a lot’s of arguments to seduce the gente male!”

If you are a big fan of briefs and thongs, Kale Owen is a company you need to check out. They have very few trunks but everything is focused on smaller more form fitting undies. Which in my opinion is never a bad thing. The colors and patterns are also fun. They have the traditional black, white and red, but they also have yellows, pink and prints.

The pictures will be broken up in the each individual style. We hope you will go check out all the different styles and colors at the Planet Undies Kale Owen page!

3Marcuse’s new underwear line, United, is a colorful collection featuring bold and bright colors for everyone. I was fortunate enough to try the red pair which was a beautiful tone of red, looking great next to the white waistband. Speaking of the waistband, the first thing I noticed when I picked up the pair was an unusual texture on my hands. The waistband writing has a rubber type feel to it, similar to the soles of shoes which I had never felt before. I enjoyed this new feeling as it was something different that sets the pair apart from all other underwear I had. Fortunately, the waistband does not cause any discomfort when it is being worn either.

The next visual piece I noticed was the front pouch and fly of this pair of underwear. The pouch has a button fly on it which is not something I have seen much of since my days in high school with boxers. The front button fly comes down to personal preference. We have had many discussions at UNB on the presence of a button fly. I know many men who would love that and appreciate having that on their underwear. For me, it is not something I need or want to have. I view that has a pro and con of the underwear, depending on what your desire is. I will say that I did not use it once.

I wear a medium and overall the pair stayed fairly true to size. I did find it at times uncomfortable in the front pouch by the leg opening with a lack of space for everything. I wore the pair to work and did all of the normal activities of the day. I found myself adjusting the area several times as the afternoon went on. I am unsure if a size up would have helped in that area or if it depends on your pouch.

The Marcuse United brief comes in 8 beautiful colors. I love that Marcuse is offering a gift set of all 8 together! This is a great selling feature and would recommend adding color to your underwear drawer this way. Overall the brand is a great looking brand and the slight discomfort I felt would not keep me from continuing to wear this pair or more Marcuse.

Pros:

  • Waistband texture
  • Button fly
  • Color selection

Cons:

  • Button fly
  • Tight pouch

Ratings

  • Daily Fit = 8
  • Sizing = 8
  • Construction/Materials = 8
  • Styling = 8
  • Daily Performance = 8
  • Overall = 8

Marcuse furnished this pair for review. You can find this pair for $17.95 AUD.

With great pleasure we bring you the 2014 Holiday Guide shoot. We couldn’t have done it without our sponsors GDD World (Clever, JOR, ManView Bodywear), Modus Vivendi, Cocksox, aussieBum, Wood Underwear and Charles Owo. It was a was our best shoot to date. We had one minor hiccup but other than that the day went super smooth!

The video was released yesterday, which gave you a preview to the shoot. The photographer is Ignacio Rivera Jr. who has shot our last years Holiday Guide and the 2014 Swimwear Guide. Our models are Derek Yates, Chandler, Michael and Nathan. All had a lot of fun during and after the shoot when we did dinner!

We hope you enjoy the pics and get some of these great pairs for yourself or your loved one this holiday Season.

M.V.Buddha_10I know it’s been a long time since I have dropped a post onto the site (sorry guys) so I figured, since it’s Thanksgiving season, what better way to express my feelings regarding why I love underwear and my experiences with UNB via the word “Thankful”. I hope it inspires you.

  • Twitter Underwear Selfies!
  • Hanging on the couch all day in briefs
  • A lot of good conversations with great underwear lovers
  • New underwear designers
  • Klein, Calvin: My first designer pair
  • Free Underwear! (Sometimes)
  • Ultra contour pouches
  • Low Rise Styles

Editors Note: We wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving and post what you are thankful about here, it doesn’t have to be underwear related!

M.V.Buddha_5This is the fourth part of the 2015 Modus Vivendi campaign. The campaign was photographed by Joan Cresol. We hope you will check it out this holiday season as a gift for someone special or yourself.

Modus Vivendi proudly presents the fourth part of its latest campaign in which its new 2015 collection is presented by ten of the most individual, visionary photographers active in the world today. After our first three stops in England, the USA and Greece, the home of Modus Vivendi, we take you to Spain and its red-blooded capital, Madrid, the home of Spanish photographer Joan Crisol.

Crisol presents us with superb images of serenity, inner strength and harmony which, we feel, perfectly capture the spirit of the new Buddha line.
In fact, Christos Bibitsos, founder of Modus Vivendi, drew his inspiration for the new line from the martial arts practices of Shaolin monks, using oriental oranges and yellows to complement blacks in this wide new range of men’s underwear and loungewear.

There’s the super comfortable Buddha robe, lounge pants and converter boxers, along with some of the best-loved, highly individual Modus Vivendi designs, such as the langot, the sumo brief and sarouel pants, in new colours, patterns and fabrics. Joan Crisol chose model Davide Zongoli for the shoot. An artist, dancer and acrobat, Zongoli’s heroic physique, focus, incredible strength and flexibility helped Crisol to create the brilliant, mesmerising images that illustrate the Buddha line. Enjoy!

UNB Holiday-5Black Friday is coming up this Friday and we all know what that means, crazy deals, large crowds, and the welcoming of the holiday season! What once was only a brick and mortar store occasion has turned into a retail world of deals, specials, and chaos. Many people see Black Friday as a chance to jump start holiday shopping for their loved ones with unbeatable prices but there is also an opportunity to spoil ourselves with a little underwear shopping.

If you are like me and signed up on numerous underwear brand’s and store’s newsletters you are already getting your email full of Black Friday deals. This is a great chance to try something new, treat yourself, and get a great deal. I remember 2 years ago when Andrew Christian was a brand I only knew about but had never purchased. That Black Friday I received an email offer that I knew I had to take advantage of. Not only was I getting a discount on a few pairs of new underwear but I could also get a free calendar (Who doesn’t enjoy 12 months of underwear wearing men?!?) I could not say no and that Black Friday in 2012 was the first time I ordered Andrew Christian.

Two years later, I am always looking to find the right moment to jump start a new underwear adventure. Since joining forces with UNB and following various social media outlets, my eyes continue to be opened to underwear brand after underwear brand that I never knew existed or had yet to try. It is exciting. A holiday present for yourself that is from you, for you, and something you dream about. Have you made yourself a list yet? I can tell you that this year I have my heart set on something new and I can not wait until Black Friday to click “add to cart!” My list this year consists of Pump Underwear. I have been in awe of their advertising campaigns for awhile now but have not had the absolute pleasure of slipping into one of their briefs or jocks.

As 2014 is winding down and this time of year brings a wrap up of what the year was and what is coming in the next year, take a moment and reflect. When you think back to how your 2014 was, think about doing something for yourself this season. Maybe this Black Friday, you should step into something new and let a deal introduce you to new underwear you might just love.

clip_image002We love it when underwear retailers give back to their customers. A few other online stores have a rewards program that gives you a discount for shopping with them. The latest to this club is Jocks by RJ. Here is what they sent us:

Jocks By RJ continues to offer their customers a successful REWARDS PROGRAM. They began this doing this because so many of their sales are to loyal repeat customers. They wanted to reward their customers for their continued support and it is a great incentive to attract new customers as well.

Now whenever a purchase is made at Jocks By RJ, customers are rewarded with a point for every dollar spent. In the future, customers can use those points and convert them into dollars. Ten points equals 1 dollar towards another purchase at JocksByRJ.com. That’s like getting 10% back on all of your purchases. You can check your rewards account balance whenever you want by logging in to JocksByRJ.com.   Please check the rules and specifics for our rewards program on the site.

Something to consider during the holidays when so many people are shopping online.

Check out JocksByRJ.com because there has never been a better time to shop there.

(SS13)-GRADIENT

In the last few years the main style of most men have been a boxer brief. They have hit mainstream stores and the majority of guys wear them on a daily basis. This has shifted from the boxer trend of the 2000’s. So underwear is getting more form fitting. Comfort along with style have become two factors for guys in buying underwear.

The collections we have released have been a mix of briefs and boxer briefs. But, it seems guys are branching out and trying new things. On our holiday shoot two of the models Chandler and MIchael were the guys were were talking about. They never really wore briefs but after Chandler told me he can’t believe how great they feel.

I think more guys are starting to branch out and try new things. No longer is it expected that you have to wear boxers. More guys including straight guys are paying attention to what they wear. They spend big money on their jeans, shirts and pants. Why wear some six pack underwear you buy at a big box store. The underwear you wear should match the rest of your clothes.

So are briefs making a come back? I say yes to this because more brands are making them. In the 2000’s it was pretty hard to find briefs. Companies like Calvin Klein, 2(X)ist, Cocksox and C-IN2 all had briefs in their line up. Other brands like Junk UnderJeans started with pretty much all trunks and now have a full line of briefs. It’s become pretty standard in their yearly catalog.

We are no where near briefs being the main style of underwear guys wear but the days of all boxer briefs all the time are coming to an end. I say by 2017 briefs will out number boxer briefs in men’s underwear? Will I be right? Maybe not but I think it’s safe to say it will grow to be close to 50%.

Underwear with a great pouch is one of my favorite things in underwear EVER. It is also a big topic for you guys as well. One of our posts for endowed guys has constantly searched as one of top ranked posts. So when Curb Wear send me about the Enhance I was all about it! They made a pouch design with out any sort of straps or details you have to put on!

Here are two FAQ’s from their site:

Is the Enhancing Pouch for me?

Yes, if you want a bigger, more comfortable boost with no uncomfortable straps, cups or pockets.

How does it work?

The fabric is contoured to create a comfortable lift and ‘push out’ effect without any padding.

What makes this brief different?

A natural looking lift that is comfortable to wear all day. Piping on the back creates the look of a rounder, firmer bum.

It is made out of a 93% Cotton and 7% Elastane fabric.so it will be comfortable and soft. Elastane gives the fabric a stretch similar to a spandex blend. It comes in a blue and white brief, along with navy hip. This is also in the Identity line with Blow me (in black) and Top (in Blue).

Find these pairs at the Curb Wear site!

StayWhat would the winter be without a new Tartan line from 2(X)ist. Every year like clockwork they refresh the collection and make it better than the last! This year they have a few new styles. The one that is really cool is the Union Suit! I am going to focus on the Long Johns of the collection. Long Johns are the one thing that seems to get bigger every year and 2(X)ist has put their spin on them with this collection.

The collection has four different colors. They are black, grey heather, cranberry and grey heather/cranberry stripe. My personal favorite is the striped. Its like the print to me that pops. But pick the favorite color and its topped with the famous tartan waistband. Each year they tweet it to make it better than last years. This is a big selling point for me.

You maybe asking sure it looks great but will it function in cold weather? The line is made out of 100% cotton that can be worn under your favorite pants without being too bulky. This with ribbed ankles so they will stay in place through out the day! Lastly, it has a functional fly for those who like those!

The collection is out now and comes in a limited edition log box. This package is one of the most creative for underwear I have seen in a long time. So if you need long johns this year check the Tartan line out from 2(X)ist. The Long Johns retail for $39
