As we posted last week, David Benjamin is the face of Cellblock 13 for the next year. We got the chance to talk to him about this new project and what the year will hold. We also talked to him about underwear. Here is the interview:
UNB: Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions. This past month Timoteo announced you would basically be the face of the Cellblock13 brands. How did this arrangement come about?
DB: First, thanks for asking me to sit down with you! I’m really pleased to have the chance to talk about this new collaboration with Timeteo and CellBlock13, as well as introduce myself to readers of UnderwearNewsBriefs.com!
I first met Timeteo Ocampo, the Founder and Creative Director of Timeteo, last year during a photo shoot in their LA offices.
We hit it off immediately and had a long talk about the need for an underwear line made for mature, sexually confident men. I told him how I hated walking into stores only to find rows of poorly constructed, candy-colored jocks featuring weird pouches and even weirder cutouts. He told me how he designed CellBlock13 for men who were comfortable in their own skin and looking for well constructed, playful, sexy underwear.
After seeing the proofs from our shoot together, I approached Timeteo about partnering with CellBlock13 as their first-ever exclusive model. To my surprise he said yes, and the rest is history!
UNB: It sounds like you had a great time working with Timoteo. What about that first shoot made you want to be the “face” of Cellblock 13?
DB: I had, and continue to have, an amazing working relationship with Timoteo. He is a creative man, a businessman, and a decent guy. He’s exactly the kind of man I love to work with: creative, intelligent, and thoughtful.
During that first shoot together, Timoteo and I talked extensively about trends in not just underwear and the adult industry, but also in the gay community at large. We both agreed that all three are on the cusp of movement towards embracing a more masculine, mature esthetic. We further agreed that the trend for young muscle guys and twinks was waning.
Both of us talked about how our friends were starved for clothes, models, and a culture that embraced a more masculine and mature sexuality: Clothes designed for and flattering of men, not boys; porn featuring men enjoying passionate sex, rather than youthful boys cavorting; and a culture that honored and respected a new generation of men who are not interested in recapturing their youth, but rather in exploring the benefits and privileges of maturity.
I knew that Timoteo and CellBlock13 had the design sensibility I wanted to represent, and I believed that I was the right kind of model to represent that sensibility. Being “hot” will always be important, but the defining feature of CellBlock13 and me is that we are both “sexy”. And there is a difference between being “hot” and being “sexy.” Hot is all about genetics: tall, well-muscled, nice teeth, etc… Sexy on the other hand is all about attitude…being “sexy” is about how you interact with your environment. That kind of awareness is usually lost on youth, and more often seen in people who possess a measure of maturity. Exp. Megan Foxx is “hot” Amal Clooney is “sexy.”
So with that in mind, I asked Timoteo if they would be interested in signing an “exclusive” model. He said, that since they were a relatively new brand, they had never tried it before – but that they would be willing to discuss it. After meeting with Timoteo again, this time with his staff present, we agreed to a partnership. I couldn’t be more pleased.
UNB: Sounds like you two have a solid foundation for a great year. So what do you guys have planned and what can we expect over the next year? Other than great pics like the ones already released
DB: I hope so! As for the coming year, I’m not sure I have an answer for you. As CellBlock13’s first-ever exclusive model there is no script written that we can follow. From my point of view, I have never been in a partnership like this, so I am unsure what to expect. I can tell you that Timoteo and I will be shooting more photos this Memorial Day weekend in Chicago (He will be there for IML and I will be there attending the Grabbys).
What I do know is that the foundation has been set for a mutually beneficial relationship, and that men in the underwear market who feel that their needs and esthetics are not being addressed will finally have a go-to brand for sexy, fun, and flattering underwear. UNB: What is your favorite style of underwear? (Brief, jock, boxer brief, thong)? Did you have any of the Cellblock 13 before working with Timoteo?
DB I prefer jockeys for daytime, commando for night, and jocks for playtime 😉
As for owning CellBlock13, I actually did have a few pair…as I said, I love the styles, cuts, and colors. They are flattering for a lot of men, me included!

Its a fun pair to wear for a Friday. Friday is a day to celebrate, and I’m going to celebrate TGIF style! That involves party favors, like this wild print on my new #Discover undies which are hidden beneath my understated navy tweed suit.
Its an unusually cold day in L.A. Since its Friday, I’m going for my own version of casual Friday.
I got this idea to wear a Henley t-shirt under a suit from the GQ Style Guide. Its a fresh way to blend classic with comfort.
Speaking of comfort, these Discover briefs may have a loud print, but they’re ultra comfy! The fit is almost like a pair of swim shorts. They provide lots of coverage, so I’m not worried about my “guest of honor” down there, slipping out at any time during this party!
Parties should be fun, so I’m continuing the good times with a hilariously immature dinosaur print on my socks.
Again, all of this is under a classically fit, tweed, two piece suit I got at H&M, and then had tailored to fit me like a glove. The henley shirt is a charcoal grey, and I love how casual, it makes this suit. Its casual, yet classy.
To dress it up a bit, and make a day at the office feel like a swanky party, I topped it all off with a wool/silk blend scarf with fringe. There are not many days you can actually wear a scarf in L.A., so I take the chance any time I can. I’m a sucker for man accessories.
The key to dressing for me, is to always have fun, and make some kind of statement with your clothes.
Yes, I have to dress up a bit for work, but that won’t stop me from being creative.

Over the last few months a few of the underwear stores have closed. The most recent are the Rufskin stores in NYC and Miami. It got me thinking, shopping for underwear is a big joy of mine. I love to go to a store and see the undies and feel them. It’s way different than shopping online. I”m not saying I don’t shop of line but when you get an underwear speciality store its worth spending some time browsing.
I first started shopping for underwear here in Atlanta at the Boy Next Door. They had a wall full of underwear and swimwear. I was in heaven. I would spend an hour in the store looking at everything new. This also was the time before many blogs on the net like UNB. (Yes I am dating myself). I got introduced to many brands I have never seen before. At the Boy Next Door I found Go Softwear, Baskit, Praipewear, and more. Many of them now are out of business.
Most of the specialty underwear stores are in bigger cities. Most smaller cities really don’t have the regular market to support a men’s underwear store. Which is sad. I know many of you reading this may have never been in a men’s underwear store. This is something we need to change.
Why don’t guys shop at a store?
1. Prices are higher in a store – The first thing you need to know about an underwear store the prices are often higher than those on the net. They have overhead of rent, employees and such to cover. A retail space is much more expensive than warehouse space. Internet you don’t have to do display the product or staff during certain hours. You can work anytime online.
2. I’m embarrassed to go in a store – Many guys are really embarrassed to go in a store and buy a thong or skimpy undies. Underwear is a personal being decision and they don’t want others in the general public to know what they like. They think the person behind the counter will judge them. Speaking from experience that person really doesn’t care and has seen people buy everything. In fact you can get more recommendations from that person you may not have thought of!
3. I can judge a pair of underwear online – While this one is mainly true. There are pairs that don’t convey well in pictures. I have seen many pairs at Magic that photograph horribly but when you see them in person you are like, “OMG this pair is amazing.” This also goes for fabric. If its a newer fabric until you get it the first time can’t judge it on line.
4. Someone I know may see me in the store – Well if they are in an underwear store shopping and see you. Well you’re both there for the same reason, amazing underwear! So what your friend seen you with that Clever thong or Cellblock 13 Jock. I bet if you look at what they are buying it’s equally as revealing.
I’m not saying abandon online shopping. I am all for a great sale on a pair of undies. Who out there can afford to buy full price all the time? Not me! I do it but if you’re close to a store mix up your purchases. Frequent the store and see the new stuff they get in stock. Give them advice on what you want in the store. If customers are asking for it, stores will carry it.

Ex-Towie star and soon to be husband, Mark Wright, headed to Las Vegas to celebrate the Essex hunk’s last few days as a singleton. Not only have they been running up some pretty hefty drinks bills, but they’ve been causing a splash with the ladies because of one little thing. David will model Spring/Summer 2015 Collection releases which include the ALPHA Collection just release to stores worldwide, the DEVIANT Collection which will be release in May 2015 and the AMBUSH Collection which will be released in June 2015. As well as modeling, David will be outfitted for personal appearances for the calendar year.

I believe that every person, regardless of gender, is a complex mix of what we in the Western world see as traditionally masculine and feminine qualities. Each person has a little bit of each type in varying degrees that are an outcome of environment and genetic hard wiring. Take me for instance, I love to watch any television show that includes the word “Housewives” in it (except for the Real Housewives of Miami, that business is unwatchable). I am also a diehard soccer/football fan and can watch hours of it as easily as I can watch a Real Housewives of Orange County marathon. Like my questionable taste in television programming, my admiration for Portuguese soccer player, Cristiano Ronaldo, taps into both sides of my persona. He is super good looking in a very polished way, but is able to back it up with talent on the pitch.
So you can understand my excitement a couple of years ago when Mr. Ronaldo announced that he was manufacturing his own line of underthings, under the moniker “CR7” (Cristiano Ronaldo, and his jersey number is 7). The line actually is a partnership between Mr. Ronaldo, JBS (a Danish underwear manufacturer) and New York designer Richard Chai. Nonetheless, Ronaldo is the public face of the line.
Throughout my European travels, I’ve observed that the line is a mainstay at the many department stores I visited to 
shop for Euro undies. The CR7 line was everywhere. As I understand Cristiano doing underwear would be akin to a Tom Brady/Jesus got mash up putting out an underwear line. He’s THAT popular. Some might say god-like. As popular as Mr. Ronaldo might be, it still comes down to the goods. It still has to be functional and comfortable and all that good stuff, or a bunch of folks wouldn’t plop down their hard earned coins, no matter who is on the box.
So with all of this in mind I decided to log onto Amazon to check out what was available. I tried the CR7 website itself, but it seemed like I would need to enter into some sort of agreement to have them shipped to the U.S. Underwear shouldn’t be that much of a hassle. I ordered a pair from Amazon, via Freshpair, but also ordered several other interesting pairs at the same time from different stores. Which is why I didn’t order from Freshpair directly. Maybe the CR7s would have been delivered more quickly if I had ordered directly. I ordered two other pairs of underwear related items through re-sellers in the same order and they both arrived two days sooner.
They are packaged very attractively, with a black and white photo of Mr. Ronaldo sporting the goods himself on the front. I ordered a size small, pima cotton “luxury brief” in a soft grey color. Partly because everything else that was available on Amazon was absurdly expensive. Upon unwrapping my very own pair of CR7s, I immediately noticed the waist band that had “Cristiano Ronaldo” attached front and center on the band in raised, rubberized letters. That seemed like a nice, luxurious flourish. However, in terms of the overall look of the garment, the rest of it was rather basic.
It seemed well made, with even stitching and no loose threads. The cut was a little boxy for my own taste and what I look for in a brief. My impression is that the brand caters to the mass market, so I assume that if they were cut any skimpier, they wouldn’t sell as well. I wore them all day on a Saturday, so that entailed running errands, sitting and watching tv, and going out to a movie and they held up well. I didn’t really notice them—which coincidentally pretty much sums up how I felt about the briefs, eh.
I paid about $19 for them before shipping.
All in all, the CR7s luxury brief might be a nice upgraded basic for the mass market at large, but at the $19 price point, I’ll take a pass.

Singlets have been a favorite of mine for as long as I can remember. I have written many times about my love of them. Now they have hit mainstream and a lot of companies are making them. Some are for more work out activities and others are more erotic in nature. While I wouldn’t say the LA Pop Singlet is an “erotic” singlet it is super sexy.
When I got to pick what I wanted UNB to review, this was top of the list. And luckily they sent us one to review. When I was in Vegas and met with them about the new collection. Their wholesale guy said there was one singlet I was going to love. I was curious as to which it is. The USA singlet had been released and it was awesome. When the model came out in this I was hooked. I had to have it. The print is amazing and fun.
Its always difficult to review a singlet to me. I mean I’m not going to find someone and best of 5 pins wins. Its not something you want to wear to work, because it’s not practical to wear under work clothes. So how do you review it? I wore it one night while I was watching TV and to sleep in. I figured that if it was super comfy to sleep in, any activity would be good in it.
The first thing I noticed was the great fit. Sometimes singlets can have really tight straps that were hard to put on. That is, some singlets you put on through the neck, through the side. Others can be just annoying when you can’t stretch the material to get it on. This singlet I put on through the arm opening. The shoulder straps went over my head without issues and fit snug in the shoulder.
The LA Pop singlet is made out of 83% nylon 17% spandex fabric. A singlet you want in thicker material, especially if you want to have it on during any athletic activity. The fabric is bright made out of blues, yellows, oranges and purples. It’s a more abstract print. The fabric is off set by black trim that frames it nicely. The neck, arm and neck openings are all black. Most singlets tent to be solids or color blocks. This is a breath of fresh air in the world of singlets.
I found this singlet super comfy to sleep in. I have slept in many singlets over the years. Sometimes the shoulder straps dig in or they loose their shape. This one did not do either. If felt amazing to wear all night. When I woke up I didn’t’ want to take it off. The pouch is great too. Its not defined like the Performance X singlets I have but its supportive and holds your goods nicely.
Sizing for singlets can be tricky. It’s not like underwear. You have to take in your height, waist size and build. If you are a medium in underwear but yet over 6’2” you will need to get a larger size. If you’re a more muscular or beefy guy you def need to look at a larger size. The singlet I received was an XL. The reason is I’m 6’4”, stocky and there is no way I would be in a large. Even when I was in better shape XL for my height always fit. This is true for a spandex material.

March is one of my favorite times of year. You may think its due to the change in weather, winter is leaving and spring is about to be sprung. Yeah I do enjoy that but my favorite is that N2N Bodywear releases its new collection. Unlike other brands they just do one collection a year.
In February of this year they released a limited collection to tease us. It was kind of out of the blue. One of the linesthey released was the Primary Collection. The name comes from the colors of the collection. It’s available in Red, Blue and Green. I of course got the green. Which is my favorite color. It is a color that is rare in underwear. So I jumped at the chance for green undies.
N2N sent us a few different pairs to review. This being one of them. We have a few more reviews coming soon from thenew collection including swimwear and underwear! Not to mention one singlet.
I wore the pair for a lazy day at home. I had no real plans and wanted a pair of great undies to lounge around the house. This pair is really comfortable and has the signature N2N pouch. I don’t know how Andrew does it but they have one of my favorite pouches and it caries across all their lines. The contrasting yellow piping really makes the pair pop.
This collection is a simple design. Simple is not a bad things. One of the latest trends in men’s underwear is having amazing and colorful prints. Sometimes you need something simple in your underwear drawer. The fabric is a 90% cotton and 10% spandex blend. Which will make this simple design fit amazing.
Sizing for N2N Bodywear is pretty consistent. I have had very few issues with pairs not fitting. My only concern is I’m going to work on loosing weight again and love this pair so if I loose too much weight I won’t be able to wear it. The size I received is an XL and it fit amazing.
